Max’s password-sharing crackdown is no longer just a warning: Warner Bros. Discovery launched a paid Extra Member option in the U.S. on April 22, 2025, and HBO Max’s current U.S. help pages describe household checks and travel verification. People who live with the account owner can share the base account; someone living elsewhere needs an eligible Extra Member invitation or a separate subscription.
What the crackdown means
The service’s rule distinguishes between sharing within a household and sharing with someone who lives elsewhere. The account owner and people living with them may use the base account. A friend, relative, college student living in a dorm, roommate who has moved out, or former partner at another address is outside that household. They need their own subscription or an Extra Member invitation from an eligible account owner. HBO Max’s U.S. account-sharing guidance specifically treats a family member living at another location, such as a college dorm, as outside the household.
This is not a ban on all simultaneous streams or legitimate travel. Household sharing remains allowed, and the service provides a Home or Traveling verification flow for devices away from the recognized household.
When did enforcement begin?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the U.S. Extra Member Add-On on April 22, 2025. The official U.S. help pages currently describe household verification, household updates, travel prompts, and paid extra-member sharing as account features. They do not establish one universal enforcement start date or show that every account, device, provider, and market received identical prompts at the same time. Warner Bros. Although the story began when the service was called Max, official U.S. support pages now use the HBO Max name. The rules and prices below describe the U.S. offering as listed on August 18, 2026; they should not be assumed to apply worldwide.
How HBO Max identifies a household
HBO Max says it assesses account details, profile settings, network data, IP addresses, device IDs, and user activity. It defines a household as the collection of devices that can stream using the same account. The help page does not reduce that assessment to a rule such as one IP address equals one household.
A household can be updated from a TV connected to the home network, or from a computer connected to that network if the subscriber does not have a TV. If a household member is incorrectly prompted, connect the device to the home network, update the household, and request the one-time code sent to the account email. Review the account’s device list, sign out unfamiliar devices, and change the password if unauthorized access is suspected. What to do when traveling
When a device is away from the recognized household, the service may offer Home or Traveling and ask the account owner or household member to verify with a one-time code sent to the account email. If a traveler sees “Subscribe today to keep streaming,” the official instruction is to select “I’m Traveling” and request the code. The number of travel selections is limited, so this is a verification route, not an unlimited way to share an account from another home.

- For frequent travel, HBO Max recommends streaming for a few minutes on a mobile device at each residence and streaming at least once a month on a computer or mobile device connected to home Wi-Fi.
- On a TV device, choose “I’m traveling” when prompted.
- If you regularly split time between two locations, stream from both about every 90 days to help the service recognize them.
These are the help center’s instructions, not a guarantee that every multi-home arrangement will work without interruption. The official travel guidance says the number of selections is limited.
What the Extra Member Add-On includes
The add-on costs $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes, on top of the owner’s base subscription. One account can have only one Extra Member. That person gets a separate login and password, one profile, and one simultaneous stream, with the same plan features as the owner, including applicable Premium video quality on supported titles.

- The extra member must be at least 18 years old and in the same country where the account owner subscribed.
- They can stream anywhere HBO Max is available.
- An adult profile can be transferred, preserving its watch history and My List. Kids profiles cannot be transferred through this flow.
The separate login makes this more controlled than handing over the owner’s password, but it is not an independent subscription: the extra member depends on the owner keeping the base plan active. Details are in HBO Max’s Extra Member help page.
Who can add an Extra Member?
The add-on is limited to eligible subscribers billed directly by WarnerMedia/HBO Max. The official eligibility guidance excludes Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundles and subscriptions billed through app stores, internet, mobile, television, or other third-party providers. Check who bills the account before looking for the add-on; a paid subscription does not automatically qualify.
In the account’s subscription area, check the billing provider. Plan management depends on that provider, so changing a plan inside the app does not necessarily change who bills you. If the add-on is missing, first check the billing relationship, whether the account is bundled, whether you are signed in as the owner, and whether you are using a supported management path. How the cost compares with a separate subscription
These are the listed U.S. direct-billing prices on August 18, 2026. Taxes may apply. The annual figures are for paying by the year rather than twelve monthly installments.

At these U.S. listed monthly prices, Extra Member costs $3 less per month than a new Basic with Ads subscription. That is the incremental cost to add one person, not the total household cost: the owner continues paying for the base plan. If the owner is keeping the base subscription only for the outside user, compare the full cost of maintaining it with that person’s own plan. - Go to the HBO Max subscription page and sign in as the account owner.
- Choose Get Add-Ons, select Extra Member Add-On, then choose Confirm & Pay Now.
- Choose Invite Extra Member and enter the person’s first name and email address.
- Choose a new profile or an existing adult profile, then select Send Invite.
- Have the invited person accept using the invitation email and set up their own login.
The invitation expires after seven days. If it expires before acceptance, the owner can resend it or invite someone else. For management, the current app path is Profile → Account → Manage Extra Members; labels can vary by platform or branding transition. The steps are from HBO Max’s Extra Member instructions.

What happens if you remove the member or cancel?
Removing an individual Extra Member ends that person’s access immediately. Canceling the add-on is different: the extra member can continue until the current add-on billing period ends. If the owner cancels the base plan, both owner and extra member lose access when that plan expires. The help page says unused days on the Extra Member Add-On may receive a prorated refund when the base subscription is canceled. Check the account’s terms and billing details before making a change; see the cancellation guidance.
Which option makes sense?
- Consider Extra Member if one adult lives outside the household, the owner wants to retain the existing plan, the owner is billed directly, and both people are in the same country.
- Consider a separate subscription if the owner uses a bundle or third-party billing, more than one outside person needs access, the other user is under 18 or in another country, independent billing matters, or the owner may cancel the base plan.
- Check the full cost if the base subscription is being kept only to support the extra member; the add-on’s lower incremental price does not make the owner’s base-plan bill disappear.
Moving from a third-party subscription to direct billing may require canceling through that provider and waiting for the subscription to expire before resubscribing directly. Provider terms and promotional consequences can vary; check them before switching. HBO Max’s plan-management page explains that billing arrangements affect how subscriptions are managed.
