An HDMI cable alone usually cannot connect to a phone, and Netflix may block playback if the adapter or the connection does not support protected video. The steps depend on whether your phone has USB-C or Lightning.
What you need for Netflix over HDMI
The connection is: phone port → video adapter or video-capable cable → HDMI connection → TV HDMI input. The adapter must carry video, not merely change the plug shape or charge the phone.
- A Netflix account and the Netflix app.
- A phone that supports wired video output. USB-C by itself does not guarantee this.
- A compatible video adapter or USB-C cable, plus an HDMI cable if the adapter does not have an attached HDMI plug.
- A TV or display with an available HDMI input.
- A connection that supports Netflix-protected video. Netflix advises checking HDCP 2.2 for USB-C or Thunderbolt video connections.
- Power for the phone or adapter if needed.
Netflix says applicable USB-C and Thunderbolt connections must support high-resolution video playback and specifies USB 3.1 or later. Confirm the phone and adapter specifications before buying: a charging-capable cable or adapter may not carry video.
Connect an iPhone to the TV
USB-C iPhone
- Check the iPhone’s technical specifications to confirm that its model supports wired video output.
- Connect a USB-C-to-HDMI video adapter to the phone. Netflix recommends Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter; another adapter may work if it supports video playback.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV.
- Set the TV to the HDMI input you used, unlock the iPhone, open Netflix, and start a title.
Lightning iPhone
- Connect an Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the iPhone.
- Connect an HDMI cable between the adapter and the TV, then select that HDMI input.
- Open Netflix and start playback.
Netflix lists Lightning Digital AV Adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported. To check an adapter already in hand, disconnect its cables, connect it to the iPhone, then open Settings > General > About > Apple HDMI Adapter and check Model Number. Netflix warns that unsupported Lightning adapters can cause playback problems. See Netflix’s device-to-TV guidance.

Connect an Android phone
- Look up the exact phone model in the manufacturer’s specifications. Check for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “USB-C video output,” “external display support,” “video out,” or a model-specific display mode.
- If the phone supports wired video, use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or video cable explicitly rated for video playback.
- Connect the adapter to the phone and the HDMI cable to the TV. Select the TV’s corresponding HDMI input.
- Open Netflix and start playback.
Android compatibility varies by model: a USB-C charging port does not establish that a phone can output video. Netflix mentions Samsung DeX and Smart View as examples of device display features, but neither name guarantees that every Samsung phone supports wired HDMI output. Check the specifications for the specific model and adapter.
Fix a black screen, sound-only playback, or an HDMI error
These symptoms can have different causes. The phone must produce a video signal; the adapter and HDMI chain must carry it; and HDCP—the copy-protection link—must permit Netflix playback. Menus or other phone content appearing on the TV does not prove Netflix’s protected video can play.

- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the phone.
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter. If the HDMI cable is reversible at both ends, swap its ends.
- Try another HDMI port, then another cable.
- Connect the adapter directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing any receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or capture device.
- Check that the phone supports wired video and that the adapter supports video playback and the necessary HDCP protection. Netflix advises checking HDCP 2.2 for USB-C or Thunderbolt connections.
- Restart the phone, quit and reopen Netflix, and try another title.
- Test the setup with another TV or display. If it still fails, check the phone manufacturer’s specifications and replace an unsupported adapter with one documented to work with the phone and protected video.
Netflix’s troubleshooting steps also recommend trying another HDMI input or cable, bypassing receivers and sound systems, and testing another TV. Its black-screen guidance covers sound-without-picture and related display problems.
AirPlay, mirroring, and casting are not the same as HDMI
- Wired video output: The phone sends a display signal through a cable and adapter to the TV.
- Screen mirroring: A wireless display shows the phone’s screen. Netflix says AirPlay and screen mirroring are no longer supported for Netflix playback; its device guidance also says AirPlay is not supported for iPhone and iPad.
- Casting: The phone selects a title on a compatible streaming device, which handles playback. This is different from mirroring the entire screen.
Some Android mirroring features may work, but Netflix warns that specific devices, apps, or features may not be supported. If Netflix is black while the rest of the phone screen appears, generic mirroring is not a dependable workaround; try supported wired output or play Netflix through the TV or streaming device’s own app.

Choose HDMI, a streaming device, or the TV app
| Option | Extra hardware and network | Phone battery and use | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired HDMI | Requires a video-capable phone, the right adapter, and an HDMI input; streaming still needs internet unless playback uses a downloaded title. | The phone stays connected and may use battery quickly. | Occasional use, travel, unreliable Wi-Fi, or a non-smart TV with HDMI. |
| Streaming-device app or casting | Requires a compatible player or cast target and internet; casting generally needs the phone and target on the same Wi-Fi network. | The player can handle playback, so the phone can act as a remote rather than remain the video source. | Regular use or when you want playback without tethering the phone. |
| Netflix app built into the TV | No phone adapter; the TV needs internet and a supported Netflix app. | The phone is not needed for playback. | The simplest setup when the TV supports Netflix. |
Netflix lists supported platforms including Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV/Stick, and many smart-TV brands; availability can vary by model and support can change. Check the Netflix supported-device list.
Netflix’s current casting guidance names Chromecast third generation or older without a physical remote, Google Nest Hub displays, and select cast-enabled Vizio and Compal TVs as casting targets. For Google Home setup, Google lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later, as well as HDCP support on the connected display; HDCP 2.2 is required for 4K. See Google’s setup requirements.

For Roku, Netflix must be installed on both the mobile device and Roku, and both must use the same wireless network. Roku distinguishes casting a selected app’s playback from screen mirroring the whole phone screen; see Roku’s Netflix casting instructions.
If the TV already has Netflix, connect it to the internet, open or install the app, and follow the on-screen sign-in instructions. That avoids phone-output and adapter compatibility questions.

Playback caveats and plan differences
Netflix says downloaded shows or movies played from an iPhone or iPad through a video connection may appear with black bars because of the video format. Autoplaying the next episode is not supported when using a video cable or adapter.
Netflix’s plan guidance distinguishes casting or mirroring from wired HDMI playback: it says casting or mirroring is available on Standard or Premium plans, while the Mobile plan does not support casting or mirroring. Do not assume those wireless-plan rules describe wired HDMI. Plan names and availability vary by country; check Netflix’s plans page for your location.
