Amazon did consider a separate sports app, according to a report published on December 28, 2022. But the report said the company had not decided whether to proceed, and no launch was confirmed. As of August 18, 2026, Amazon’s public guidance points viewers to sports inside Prime Video, not to a separate Amazon sports app.
What did the 2022 report actually say?
The Information reported on December 28, 2022, citing people familiar with Amazon’s discussions, that the company was considering a standalone destination for sports programming. The Information’s report said Amazon had not made a final decision. It gave no launch date, app name, confirmed price, or complete rights lineup. Reuters’ contemporaneous coverage also described the idea as a plan under consideration, not a launched product.
“Standalone app” can mean different things, and the report did not settle which version Amazon might build. A sports tab inside Prime Video would be a navigation feature; a paid sports tier would be a subscription option; a separately branded app with its own login would be a distinct product. The reporting discussed a separate destination and the possibility of an add-on for Prime customers, but did not establish a final design or business model.
The proposed destination made strategic sense: live games can bring viewers back on a schedule, help attract or retain Prime members, create valuable advertising inventory, and make sports easier to find in a large entertainment catalog. In 2022, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy described sports as especially valuable for live engagement and Prime subscriptions, as reported by GeekWire. A new interface could address discovery; it would not, by itself, change which games Amazon had rights to show.

What sports rights did Amazon have—and what did it pursue?
Amazon’s sports catalog has always depended on territory and contract. In 2022, its notable properties included exclusive U.S. streaming rights to Thursday Night Football, selected Premier League rights in the United Kingdom, and New York Yankees games in the New York market. Industry coverage also described Amazon’s interest in additional major rights, including the NBA and college sports; interest or bidding discussions are not the same as rights secured. Sports Business Journal’s 2022 coverage discussed the company’s broader sports ambitions.
Amazon’s current U.S. offering is broader, but it is not a complete package for any one league. Its live-sports guide lists properties including the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NWSL, and NASCAR. Other countries have different rights, and a league’s games may be split among Amazon and other broadcasters.

What happened to the proposed app?
The public evidence does not confirm that Amazon launched the proposed standalone sports app. Nor does it establish that Amazon formally canceled it: absence of a public launch announcement is not proof that internal development never happened. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Amazon’s documented customer-facing sports destination remains Prime Video.
Amazon and the NBA announced an 11-year media-rights agreement in 2024, starting with the 2025–26 NBA season. The NBA says Amazon will distribute 66 regular-season games per season, as well as specified NBA Cup and other coverage. Amazon’s agreement also includes global Prime Video streaming of WNBA games beginning with the 2026 season; the WNBA package includes 30 regular-season games and the Commissioner’s Cup championship game. These agreements show expansion of sports distribution through Prime Video, not evidence of a separate sports app. See the Amazon announcement, the NBA rights announcement, and the WNBA agreement details.

As of August 18, 2026, Amazon’s own instructions direct U.S. viewers to Prime Video’s Sports areas and carousels. A dedicated area within that app can improve discovery, but it is not the same thing as a separate app with independent branding, login, or subscription.
How to find and watch Amazon sports now
- Open Prime Video. Use the app or website, then browse the Sports area or homepage sports carousel, or search for a team, league, or event.
- Check the event listing. Confirm whether that specific game is included with the relevant Prime membership, requires a paid Prime Video add-on, or is carried elsewhere.
- Check location and schedule. Rights vary by country and season; local-market restrictions or blackouts may apply. A league’s official schedule can help identify where a particular game is carried.
- Confirm your device works. Amazon says Prime Video sports are available on devices including Fire TV, Fire tablets, browsers, phones, connected TVs, and game consoles, but support can vary by device and event. See Amazon’s guide and its device and support information. For Thursday Night Football, Amazon’s NFL viewing instructions explain access for Prime subscribers.
Prime membership does not automatically include every game Amazon carries or every game in a league. Prime Video also distributes third-party subscriptions through add-ons. Before buying one, check the event’s coverage, any blackout limits, how billing and cancellation work, and whether the subscription can also be used in the league’s own app.

How the four sports-viewing models differ
| Model | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sports inside Prime Video | Games appear within Amazon’s existing video service. | One familiar app and broad device support, but sports can be harder to find among films and shows. |
| Separate sports section | A dedicated tab, page, or carousel within Prime Video. | Improves discovery without creating a new service or login. |
| Prime Video add-on | A customer pays for a league or channel through Prime Video. | Can consolidate viewing and billing, but adds a subscription; rights limits and blackouts still apply. |
| Standalone Amazon sports app | A separate app, potentially with its own branding or subscription tier. | Could offer a clearer sports-focused experience, but would require a separate product and would not remove the costs, rights limits, or platform complexity of sports distribution. |
Which subscription fits the sports you want?
There is no universal Amazon sports bundle. Start with the sport and team, then check your location, the season, the specific game, and whether it is included or an add-on. These are distinct options rather than interchangeable ways to watch every event:
- Prime Video: Amazon’s sports destination for included events and eligible add-ons. It is a poor fit if you need a complete league package, a local team whose games are restricted, or a sport Amazon does not carry. See Prime Video and Amazon Prime. Current prices are not established here, so check the service for your country and billing terms.
- NBA League Pass through Prime Video: An add-on for out-of-market NBA games and related basketball coverage. League Pass does not guarantee access to every game; nationally televised games, Amazon-exclusive games, and local blackouts can affect availability. It may not suit someone mainly seeking a local team. See NBA League Pass and Amazon’s NBA viewing guide.
- WNBA League Pass: A separate option for additional WNBA coverage; it is not interchangeable with the WNBA games included in Prime Video’s package. See WNBA League Pass.
- FanDuel Sports Network: Regional sports programming, including certain local NBA and NHL coverage where available. Some FanDuel regional channels have been offered as Prime Video add-ons in particular markets, but territory matters. See FanDuel Sports Network and the Associated Press report on its Prime Video add-ons.
- Peacock: A separate service with sports and other NBCUniversal programming. It may complement Prime Video where rights are split, but it is neither Amazon’s proposed app nor a substitute for every event on Prime Video. See Peacock.
Prices, promotions, rights, and blackout rules can change by country, season, and subscription route. Check the event and subscription terms before paying; buying an add-on through Prime Video may mean Amazon manages billing and cancellation.
