Zula USA launched ZulaWorld in June 2009, extending its children’s science series The Zula Patrol into an online world where young players explored planets, customized alien avatars and spaceships, and tackled science-themed mini-games. GamesBeat dates a quiet launch to June 1; public launch coverage followed on June 9 and 10. This is a look back at the service’s launch, not an announcement of a current product.
What ZulaWorld was
ZulaWorld was a browser-based virtual world built around The Zula Patrol, a CGI television series about alien characters solving problems through science. Children could create an alien avatar, fly a personal spaceship, customize its garage, and visit places including Zulapolis and planetary environments. The service also offered mini-games, activities, and Zula Patrol-related video content. The American Library Association described the intended audience as children six and older; other contemporary accounts used ages five and up or focused on ages six to nine. Parents and teachers were also part of its intended audience. (ALA; ABC News; Animation World Network)
Players could earn virtual currency called Zlinkles and spend it on items for avatars, spaceships, and pets. The design made the world a franchise extension as well as a game: recognizable characters and settings connected the online activities to the television property. (ALA)
How the games put science into play
The educational idea was to make science part of what players did, rather than confining it to explanatory text. Reported launch activities included balancing weights on a lever under changing planetary conditions, steering bumper ships around Saturn’s rings, reasoning about wheel size in a skateboard activity, and exploring clouds and weather patterns on Venus. The wider themes included astronomy, gravity, leverage, mathematics, physics, recycling, and problem-solving. (GamesBeat; Animation World Network)

- EASY-TO-FOLLOW SCIENTIFIC MANUAL: Well-illustrated in a step-by-step format, which makes the experiments easy to follow. it is easy and fun to incorporate basic lessons when doing science experiments with your kids at home and in a hands-on way.
- ALMOST TOOLS & MATERIALS NEEDED INCLUDED: high-quality lab science tools and kids-friendly materials. kids can wear goggles to do experiments like real scientists. there are plenty of cool projects you can do with regular household items.
- FUN EXPERIMENTS TIME FOR LITTLE SCIENTIST: Nurture your kids' curiosity by introducing simple science experiments! Science experiments give children the opportunity to explore and learn in new ways.
- LEARNING & EDUCATIONAL SCIENCE GIFTS IDEAD: for Christmas, birthdays, summer-winter activities, school breaks, and weekend fun. The kids will get a good way to learn through play, and also parents will get some quality science time in with kids.
Those examples show science concepts in the game design; they do not establish that playing improved children’s science achievement. Launch-era descriptions explain the educational intent and activities, but do not report independent learning-outcome measurements. The distinction matters: an activity can be science-themed and encourage reasoning without documented evidence of measurable educational gains.
IBM’s role in the launch
IBM supported the project with technical and infrastructure assistance, and IBM Research was involved. GamesBeat connected that work to IBM’s educational virtual-world efforts and its Smarter Planet initiative. The coverage described collaboration and support, not IBM ownership or publication of ZulaWorld. GamesBeat also reported that the initial assistance was provided in kind and that future revenue participation was discussed; that account should not be confused with proof of a completed revenue-sharing arrangement. Child safety and changing communication features
The American Library Association’s 2009 evaluation described a cautious launch setup: a parent’s email permission was required to join, children were warned not to share personal information, and players used alien identities. Communication initially relied on preset phrases such as “Want to play a game?” rather than unrestricted chat. Those controls limited some risks, but no moderation system makes an online space risk-free. (ALA)
The social features later changed. August 2009 coverage reported an open-chat option protected by Crisp NetModerator software, with an opt-out option. That was a later addition, not the restricted launch configuration described by the ALA. (Cynopsis, August 4, 2009)

Free access, subscriptions, and Zlinkles
The service used a freemium model: basic access was free, while paid membership opened additional levels or content. Contemporary reports list these launch-era subscription prices:
| Term | Reported price | Source note |
|---|---|---|
| One month | $5.99 | Reported by GamesBeat and Cynopsis. |
| Six months | $29.99 | Listed by the American Library Association and Cynopsis; omitted from GamesBeat’s price list. |
| One year | $49.99 | Reported by GamesBeat and Cynopsis. |
These are historical prices reported around launch, not current offers. Zlinkles added another commercial layer: players spent the currency on virtual goods, and Zula Patrol DVD promotions offered bonus currency. One reported promotion included 200 Zlinkles, described at the time as worth about $10 in virtual items. The arrangement linked physical-media sales to online play, but the available figures do not show how much revenue either subscriptions or virtual goods generated. Competition and the franchise strategy
ZulaWorld entered a crowded children’s virtual-world market. GamesBeat said roughly 200 such worlds were operating or in development at the time; that is the outlet’s estimate, not an independently verified industry census. Zula’s proposed points of difference were the television brand, science-oriented play, IBM’s technical support, free basic access, and an appeal to parents and teachers. GamesBeat also noted the challenge of standing out: a familiar show could attract children, but discovery remained difficult amid competing worlds. (GamesBeat)
The business logic joined several parts of a children’s media franchise: the show built awareness, characters became avatars and locations, games extended engagement, subscriptions and virtual goods offered ways to monetize play, and DVDs could promote the online world. The model’s vulnerability was that online discovery depended in part on the reach of the television property. A familiar brand could provide a starting audience, but the launch coverage does not establish that it produced lasting scale or commercial success.

What is known about its later availability
By 2010, an educator guide still referred to ZulaWorld as an online learning environment. That documents the service’s presence in educational materials at that time, but does not verify that the site remains operational today. The available records do not establish a current signup process, present-day pricing, or an exact shutdown date. (Zula Patrol educator guide)
Why the 2009 launch is notable
ZulaWorld brought together several ideas that were prominent in children’s digital media: turning a television setting into a navigable world, embedding educational themes in games, using virtual currency and subscriptions, and limiting children’s communication through parent involvement and moderation. Its launch also illustrates the difference between an educational design claim and evidence of educational effectiveness. The record supports a science-focused entertainment experience and a layered business model; it does not establish learning outcomes, long-term audience size, profitability, or the service’s final operating date.
