YouTube Music’s desktop experience is an installable web app, not a confirmed new native Windows or Mac application. You can use it at music.youtube.com, install it through Chrome for a separate app-like window, control playback with keyboard shortcuts, and cast to compatible devices. The web experience does not have confirmed desktop offline downloads, and its features are not identical to the mobile app.
Google’s help pages document these capabilities but do not announce one dated, universal “new web update.” Interface controls can vary by account, region, browser, and rollout.
What is new about YouTube Music on the web?
The practical desktop option is the YouTube Music website, which Chrome can install as a web app. Installation adds a launcher and opens the service in an app-like window; it does not turn the site into a separately maintained native Windows or macOS program. Google documents the web app, keyboard shortcuts, and casting in its YouTube Music web-app help page.
Use the terms carefully: the web player is the service in a browser, the installable web app is a shortcut and window for that same service, and the mobile app is a separate experience with some different features. Google has not documented a single, dated desktop redesign that is available to everyone. A control appearing or disappearing for one user is not proof of a universal change.

How to install YouTube Music on a computer
- Open music.youtube.com in a standard Chrome window.
- Select the Chrome menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save, and share.
- Select Install YouTube Music, then confirm with Install.
Chrome’s wording and the location of installation controls can vary by version, operating system, and language. If the menu item is absent, update Chrome, open the site directly in a normal window, sign in, and reload. You can also check for an install icon in the address bar or use the browser’s available create-shortcut or install-page-as-app option. If installation remains unavailable, bookmark the site or pin its tab.
The installed web app can be launched from its desktop or application shortcut. Google also documents keyboard shortcuts for play, pause, and skipping. The installation changes how you open the service; it does not add mobile-only features such as offline music storage.
What you can do in the desktop web player
- Sign in to access your YouTube Music library and playlists.
- Browse and play music, podcasts, and videos available to your account and region.
- Use keyboard controls for play, pause, and skipping in the web app.
- Cast playback to compatible speakers, smart displays, TVs, and device groups.
Playlist controls can be a notable limitation. Google’s playlist help page says that, in the documented computer-browser workflow, users can view and listen to playlists but cannot create or join new ones. YouTube and YouTube Music playlist actions may differ, and available controls can depend on where you open a playlist. If the web interface does not offer the create or collaboration action you need, use the mobile app.

For recommendations, YouTube Music may use activity associated with your signed-in Google account. Google explains personalization and account-based recommendations in its recommendations help. Discovery features may differ between web and mobile; for example, Google describes Samples as a mobile-app experience.

Free access and Premium benefits vary by country, account, and content type. The table summarizes the documented distinction; it does not imply that every feature works identically across all devices.

Google’s free and Premium feature overview notes regional variation and that podcast promotions may remain even for Premium members. Premium benefits such as background play and offline downloads are documented for supported mobile apps, not as general desktop-web features. Premium is a fit if you want ad-free music, mobile background playback, audio-only music, or mobile downloads. It should not be purchased on the assumption that installing the desktop web app will provide offline computer downloads. Current membership options and pricing depend on location and billing eligibility; check the official YouTube Music membership page for the offer available to your account.
How to cast from YouTube Music on the web
- Open the installed web app or visit music.youtube.com.
- Select the Cast icon near your profile picture.
- Choose a compatible speaker, smart display, TV, or device group.
- Start playback. To stop, select Cast and then Stop casting.
Google’s web-app instructions cover casting from the site or installed app. The computer and target generally need to be able to discover each other on the network, and the target must support Google Cast. Google says Premium members can continue casting after exiting Chrome, closing the web app, or turning off the computer when the account and device setup support it. Podcast casting may be available without membership, though individual shows and download options can have separate restrictions.
When casting or controlling playback on another device, content that is not normally part of YouTube Music may appear in the player or queue depending on what is playing; disconnecting can remove that content from the queue. This can matter when mixing official tracks with videos, covers, live performances, remixes, or other YouTube content.

What the web app does not establish
- Offline desktop listening: Google documents Premium music downloads for supported mobile use, including availability for up to 30 days on mobile. Its help pages do not establish general offline downloads for the desktop browser or installable web app.
- Mobile feature parity: Samples, background playback, and downloads are described differently across web and mobile. A desktop shortcut does not make the web player equivalent to the phone app.
- One fixed interface: Controls can differ by region, account type, browser, content, and rollout. Community reports of a missing Related tab, for instance, are user reports rather than confirmation of an official global redesign.
- Every playlist action: The documented computer workflow has the create-or-join limitation described above; use the mobile app if the web controls do not expose the action you need.
Fix common desktop problems
“Install YouTube Music” is missing
- Update Chrome and open the site in a standard browser window, not an embedded or private window.
- Sign in, reload the page, and check the address bar for an install control.
- Try the browser’s available install-page or create-shortcut option.
- If the browser still does not offer installation, use a bookmark or pinned tab.
The Cast icon is missing or casting fails
- Confirm that the target device supports Google Cast and is ready to receive playback.
- Check that the computer and target are on the same Wi-Fi network and that you are signed in to the intended account.
- Test playback locally, then restart the browser and target device before trying again.

A control or feature is missing
Check whether you are using the web player or mobile app, whether the feature depends on Premium, and whether it is available for your region, account, and content type. Supervised-account restrictions, browser version, or an interface rollout can also affect what appears. Compare with the mobile app if you need to tell whether a feature is web-specific.
Playback is unreliable
- Try the same track in a regular browser tab to distinguish a site issue from an installed-app window issue.
- Temporarily disable extensions that may interfere with playback, especially ad blockers or playback controls.
- Sign out and back in, then clear site data for music.youtube.com if needed.
- Test another supported browser and note whether the problem affects one account, casting only, or all playback.
Should you use the web app or another service?
The installable web app is most useful if you already listen to YouTube Music on a computer and want a dedicated launcher, separate window, keyboard control, or simpler access to casting. A normal browser tab is sufficient for occasional listening or when you frequently switch accounts. Neither desktop option is a documented substitute for Premium mobile offline listening.

If offline listening on a computer or a more complete native desktop experience is essential, compare services on those specific needs rather than assuming YouTube Music’s app-like window provides them. Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music are comparison candidates, but plans, desktop capabilities, catalog access, and prices should be checked for your region and devices. Third-party YouTube Music clients also exist, but they are not Google products; weigh their maintenance, account-security, compatibility, and policy risks before signing in.
For a frequent YouTube Music listener, installing the web app is a convenient way to reach the existing service—not a promise of a new native client or a full mobile-feature set. Premium’s clearest advantages remain ad-free music and supported mobile playback and downloads.
