Catherine, Princess of Wales—then the Duchess of Cambridge and widely searched as Kate Middleton—was reported by the Little Princess Trust as a hair donor in January 2018. She announced in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer. The events are years apart; there is no evidence that they were medically or causally connected.
What is known about the donation
The Little Princess Trust reported on 12 June 2018 that it had learned late on Friday, 26 January, that the Duchess of Cambridge was its latest hair donor. According to the charity, the hair had been donated anonymously and went through its standard process. The account establishes the reported timing, not an exact date when her hair was cut.
The Trust’s 2019 retrospective described the donation as having taken place almost two years before October 2019, consistent with the January 2018 report. It did not identify the length or weight of the hair, or say which recipients ultimately received wigs incorporating it.
Which charity received the hair?
The donation went to the Little Princess Trust, a UK charity that provides free real-hair wigs to children and young people up to age 24 who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or other conditions. The charity also funds research into childhood cancer treatments. Its Our Story page says it has helped nearly 20,000 children and young people through its wig service; the undated page was accessed in 2026, so that total may change.

The Trust said manufacturers blend 8–10 individual hair donations to make one wig. That means it would be inaccurate to claim that Catherine’s donation alone became a particular child’s wig. Charity Manager Monica Glass said: “We are so very grateful to every single person who kindly supports the charity in this way.”
What Catherine said about her later diagnosis
In a video statement released in March 2024, Catherine said that tests following abdominal surgery had found cancer and that her medical team had advised preventative chemotherapy. The Associated Press transcript does not identify the cancer type. Her statement said: “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.”
