Yes, Google Play/YouTube stopped participating in Movies Anywhere on October 31, 2025. The timing overlapped Disney and Google’s wider YouTube TV carriage dispute, but neither company publicly established that the Movies Anywhere change was caused by that fight. Google later announced a YouTube TV deal with Disney on November 15, 2025.
Movies Anywhere’s official participant page dated June 8, 2026, and its terms updated July 21, 2026, list Google Play/YouTube again. That confirms the retailer is currently listed, but the pages do not give a restoration date or promise that every transaction made during the interruption was synchronized retroactively.
What happened to Google movies and Movies Anywhere?
Movies Anywhere is designed to connect participating digital retailers so an eligible movie bought in one store can appear in the libraries attached to the same account. When Google Play/YouTube stopped participating on October 31, 2025, that expected cross-store syncing was disrupted for Google-linked purchases and titles.
The change followed Google’s October 30 announcement that its Disney agreement had expired. Google said Disney content was no longer available for purchase or rental on YouTube, while existing purchases and rentals remained accessible. That statement addressed YouTube availability, not the separate Movies Anywhere service.

On November 15, Google announced a deal to continue carrying Disney channels on YouTube TV. A channel-carrying agreement does not, by itself, document when Movies Anywhere participation returned or whether missing entitlements were backfilled.
Timeline of the dispute
| Date | What was announced or reported | What it means for viewers |
|---|---|---|
| October 30, 2025 | Google said its Disney agreement had expired. Disney content was not currently available on YouTube TV, and Disney movies and shows were no longer available for purchase or rental on YouTube. | Google also said existing purchases and rentals remained accessible. |
| October 31, 2025 | 9to5Google reported that Google Play/YouTube stopped participating in Movies Anywhere. | Expected syncing between Google and other connected digital libraries was interrupted. |
| November 5, 2025 | 9to5Google published its report on the Movies Anywhere impact. | The service disruption received broader public attention. |
| November 15, 2025 | Google announced a deal to continue carrying Disney channels on YouTube TV. | Disney channels returned to the carriage agreement; this did not specify Movies Anywhere restoration. |
| June 8, 2026 | Movies Anywhere’s participant page listed Google Play/YouTube again. | Google was once again shown as a participating digital retailer. |
| July 21, 2026 | Movies Anywhere’s terms again listed Google Play/YouTube among current Digital Retailers. | The current terms describe automatic entitlement sharing for connected accounts. |
Did Disney and Google “break” Movies Anywhere?
The dates show a clear overlap: the Movies Anywhere participation change happened during the Disney–Google YouTube TV dispute. They do not prove the reason. No joint Disney/Google explanation identifies the carriage negotiations as the cause of the Movies Anywhere withdrawal.

The precise restoration date is also not stated. The June and July 2026 Movies Anywhere pages establish that Google Play/YouTube is listed again, but they do not guarantee that every purchase made during the interruption was automatically synchronized afterward.
What happened to movies you already bought?
Google’s October 30 notice said existing purchases and rentals remained accessible even though new Disney purchases and rentals were unavailable on YouTube. Movies Anywhere’s terms define an entitlement as a legitimately acquired license and describe automatic sharing between connected retailer accounts.

Access and syncing are separate questions. A movie can remain playable in the Google account that bought it without appearing in another connected library. After reconnecting or checking an account, compare the title in both services; if an eligible entitlement is still missing, use the retailer or Movies Anywhere support channel rather than buying the same title again.
Are Google Play and YouTube back on Movies Anywhere?
They are listed again in the current official Movies Anywhere materials available in June and July 2026. That is the strongest current confirmation of participation. It is not a published promise that every title qualifies, nor is it a guarantee that all 2025 transactions were restored retroactively.

Eligibility still depends on the studio, retailer and individual title. A Google purchase therefore may remain a Google-only entitlement if that movie is not in Movies Anywhere’s catalog.
How to check whether a purchase will sync
- Confirm your region. Movies Anywhere account eligibility is limited to the United States under its terms.
- Open your Movies Anywhere account’s retailer connections and verify that Google Play/YouTube is connected. The service’s current terms list Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV and DIRECTV as Digital Retailers.
- Check the individual title. Participation by a retailer does not make every movie eligible; studio and retailer rules apply title by title.
- Compare libraries after linking. Look for the movie in Movies Anywhere and in the Google account that holds the purchase. A missing listing is not proof that the Google purchase was deleted.
- Keep purchase records. Save the Google receipt and transaction date before contacting support, especially for purchases made around October 31, 2025.
Where can you buy a movie that syncs to multiple libraries?
| Purchase route | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play/YouTube | Listed again as a Movies Anywhere retailer in official pages dated June 8 and July 21, 2026. | The title’s Movies Anywhere eligibility and whether your accounts are connected. |
| Another listed Digital Retailer | Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV and DIRECTV are also named in the current terms. | Whether the particular movie participates and whether the retailer sells it in your market. |
| Blu-ray or DVD combo pack with a digital code | Movies Anywhere says eligible codes from Blu-ray/DVD combo packs can be redeemed into the service. | That the package includes a valid code and that the specific title and code are eligible in the United States. |
Buying from a listed retailer is not enough on its own. The movie must also be eligible, and Movies Anywhere accounts are U.S.-only under the service terms.

Why Lionsgate matters to the wider Movies Anywhere picture
Movies Anywhere announced 225 high-profile Lionsgate films at launch, with approximately 100 additional eligible Lionsgate films planned each month through 2026 and early 2027. That expansion can add more titles to the connected-library model, including films from franchises such as John Wick, The Hunger Games and Twilight.
Those figures describe the planned Lionsgate rollout, not a guarantee that every film in a franchise qualifies at every retailer. Check each title before purchasing.
Quick Recap
What the dispute means in practice
- For past Google buyers: Google said existing purchases and rentals remained accessible during the 2025 interruption.
- For cross-store collectors: the October 31 change broke the expectation that newly eligible Google purchases would automatically flow through Movies Anywhere.
- For current buyers: Google Play/YouTube is listed again, but title-level eligibility and account connection still determine whether syncing occurs.
- For shoppers seeking a backup route: an eligible digital code from a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack can be redeemed through Movies Anywhere.
- For viewers outside the United States: Movies Anywhere account eligibility does not extend beyond the U.S. under the cited terms.
