Spotify DJ began on February 22, 2023, as a beta stream for Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada. It selected personalized music, inserted spoken explanations about songs and artists, and let listeners switch direction when the selection was not working. Spotify said OpenAI’s generative AI helped its music editors produce that context; Spotify’s own personalization systems chose the music, while Sonantic technology generated the voice.
What Spotify introduced in February 2023
Spotify described DJ as “a personalized AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you.” The launch experience was not a general-purpose chatbot. It was a continuously generated music stream with short spoken commentary between selections.

At launch, DJ was available in English to Premium users in the United States and Canada through Spotify’s iOS and Android apps. Listeners could tap the DJ control to change the experience when they did not like the current musical direction.
What the launch version could do
- Choose music using Spotify’s personalization technology and a listener’s taste and listening history.
- Play a stream rather than require the listener to build a playlist manually.
- Insert spoken context about tracks, artists, or genres.
- Respond to a listener’s feedback by changing the direction of the stream.
What “OpenAI-powered” meant
Spotify assigned different jobs to different technologies. Its announcement said it used OpenAI generative AI with Spotify music editors to scale information about music and artists. Spotify’s editors remained part of the process that supplied the facts and context, rather than OpenAI independently deciding everything DJ should say.

This division matters: calling DJ an autonomous AI that chooses, researches, and narrates every track overstates Spotify’s launch description. Spotify presented personalization, editorial expertise, generative AI, and voice synthesis as connected but distinct pieces.
How DJ has expanded since launch
The feature is broader than the music-and-commentary beta announced in 2023. Spotify’s October 15, 2025 update described Premium listeners making requests in English and Spanish, including text requests and personalized prompts, while Spotify said the rollout had reached more than 60 markets at that time. That was a dated rollout statement, not a permanent market total.

Spotify’s current U.S. help documentation describes DJ as supporting text and voice requests. It says listeners can ask for music, podcasts, or audiobooks, change the mood, and ask questions about listening history or content. Those capabilities should not be projected backward onto the original February 2023 launch.
Examples Spotify gives for requests
- “Play upbeat music that matches my summer energy.”
- “Make it more upbeat.”
- “Who are this artist’s influences?”
These are Spotify’s product examples, not evidence that they are the most common requests or that every phrasing works in every market or language.

Availability in 2026
Spotify’s May 7, 2026 announcement said DJ was rolling out to more than 75 markets and adding French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Spotify also said the feature remained in beta and reported that 94 million Spotify Premium users had used DJ since its 2023 launch.
The “more than 75 markets” figure is Spotify’s snapshot from that announcement, not an exhaustive country list. Spotify’s current U.S. support page says DJ is available in a limited number of languages. Eligibility, language, and rollout status can differ by account and location, so the Spotify app and current local support page are the authoritative checks for an individual listener.

How to find and use DJ
- Open the Spotify app on a supported iOS or Android device.
- Look for DJ from Home, Search, or the Now Playing screen, the entry points described in Spotify’s current U.S. support information.
- Start the personalized stream and listen to the spoken introductions between selections.
- Use text or voice to request a different mood or ask for supported music, podcast, audiobook, history, or content information.
- Use the DJ controls to move on when the current direction does not suit you.
DJ is a Premium feature according to Spotify’s current U.S. support information. A Spotify gift card may be one way to pay for Premium where gift cards are sold and redeemable, but it is not a separate requirement for DJ. The feature is delivered through the Spotify app; no special phone, headphones, speaker, or other hardware is required.

It is a curated listening mode
DJ is designed for people who want Spotify to keep choosing music while still explaining some of the choices. That differs from a user-built playlist or a manually ordered queue, where the listener controls every item.

It is an interactive layer over Spotify’s catalog
The launch focused on spoken commentary between tracks. Later support material describes requests and follow-up questions, but the exact interaction set depends on the supported account, market, language, and current beta rollout.
It is not proof that OpenAI chooses better music
Spotify’s announcements explain the product architecture and rollout, not an independent test of recommendation accuracy, factual reliability, voice quality, or how often DJ speaks. No controlled comparison establishes that DJ is superior to a conventional playlist, radio station, or Spotify’s other recommendation features.
Why the launch description still matters
The original announcement explains the product’s basic promise: personalized music accompanied by editorially informed narration. The later request features show Spotify turning that one-way stream into a more conversational control layer. Keeping those dates separate prevents a current description of DJ from being mistaken for what every listener received at launch.
