Verdict: The LAVA ME 2 is a genuinely capable compact acoustic, not merely a novelty. Its strongest reasons to exist are its light, climate-stable composite construction, comfortable short-scale format and FreeBoost effects that play through the guitar itself. It is an excellent travel, practice and songwriting instrument, but it does not replace a full-size wooden acoustic for maximum bass, projection or traditional tonewood response.
What the LAVA ME 2 is
The ME 2 is a 36-inch, six-string acoustic-electric guitar built around LAVA’s molded Super AirSonic carbon-fiber-composite body and carbon-composite neck. It has an HPL fingerboard and bridge, a 23.5-inch scale, 18 frets, the L2 FreeBoost pickup/preamp and an included Ideal Bag case. New Atlas measured its reviewed instrument at approximately 1.7 kg (3.7 lb). The retailer specification also lists a rechargeable lithium battery and Micro-USB charging.
That combination makes it more than a conventional travel guitar. It is small enough for a hotel room, apartment, car or campsite, yet its acoustic voice and playability can support everyday practice and songwriting.
New Atlas’s June 20, 2021 hands-on review and Acoustic Guitar’s independent review provide the most useful performance evidence. The model is no longer a new 2026 release, so current stock and support require separate checking.

Carbon construction: stable, not indestructible
The molded composite body minimizes the glued joins and seasonal movement associated with conventional wood guitars. LAVA and retailer specifications claim operation across approximately -20°C to 90°C (-4°F to 194°F) and 10%–90% relative humidity. Those are manufacturer or retailer limits, not an invitation to leave the guitar in a hot car, freeze it or expose it to condensation.
In practical terms, the ME 2 should be less bothered by ordinary changes between dry rooms, humid houses and outdoor locations than a wooden instrument. That is valuable for travelers and players who cannot maintain a tightly controlled guitar room. Carbon composite does not prevent damage from a fall, crushing force or a hard impact, and the battery, tuners, frets, charging port and other electronics remain conventional failure points. Use the Ideal Bag for normal transport and a more protective case for air travel.
Size, weight and travel practicality
| Specification | ME 2 detail | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Overall format | 36-inch compact guitar | Easier to store and carry than a dreadnought or jumbo |
| Body width | 12.7 inches | Comfortable in confined seating positions |
| Body depth | 4.63 inches | Less bulky against the torso |
| Scale length | 23.5 inches | Lower string reach, with a different feel from a 25.4-inch acoustic |
| Frets | 18 | Useful upper-fret access in a compact design |
| Reviewed weight | About 3.7 lb, New Atlas measurement | Noticeably easier to carry for long periods |
The rounded, seamless body and backpack-style case make the ME 2 unusually convenient for commuting, spontaneous practice and outdoor playing. The compromise is physical rather than merely cosmetic: players used to a full-size acoustic may miss the larger air volume, longer scale and broader bass response. Very large-handed players may also need time to adapt to the shorter scale and narrower body.

Playability and the unusual neck
The ME 2 uses LAVA’s Fly/Fly+ neck concept, with a compound profile that changes along the neck. Reported specifications include a 1.68–1.69-inch nut, carbon-fiber reinforcement, a heel-less joint, PLEK-machined frets and low action. The profile is described as narrower and deeper in the lower positions, becoming wider and flatter higher up.
Acoustic Guitar’s reviewer found the neck comfortable and easy to play, while New Atlas reported good intonation and access to the upper frets on the reviewed instrument. Those are hands-on assessments, not a guarantee that every production example will feel identical. The geometry is distinctive enough that a player moving from a traditional full-size guitar should try one before buying, particularly if familiar neck shapes are a priority.
Natural acoustic sound
With FreeBoost switched off, the ME 2 sounds larger than its dimensions suggest. Reviews describe a fast attack, clear highs, strong sustain, a substantial lower-midrange and useful projection outdoors or in casual group playing. Its response is controlled and focused rather than loose or boomy.

The best description is a compact, quick-response acoustic with unusual projection—not a miniature dreadnought. A full-size wooden guitar generally moves more air, extends farther into the bass and supplies the traditional resonance that many players seek. Acoustic Guitar specifically heard less top-end sparkle than a Martin 00-18, although the ME 2’s highs remained clear. Its compact body is an advantage for comfort and portability, but it imposes real limits on low-end authority.
FreeBoost: the feature that changes the use case
The L2 FreeBoost system lets the guitar generate reverb, delay and chorus through its own body without an external amplifier. The back acts as the speaker surface, so the player hears the effects from the instrument while playing.
- Main volume control.
- Reverb control.
- Effect level control.
- Chorus/delay selector.
- An onboard microphone blended with the pickup signal.
- External output for an amplifier, PA or recording setup.
- Rechargeable battery with Micro-USB charging listed by the retailer.
Moderate reverb and delay are the most convincing applications. The effects make solitary practice more immersive and can help a songwriter hear a part in a fuller context without setting up an amp. They are not a substitute for a pedalboard: extreme settings can become obvious, and Acoustic Guitar reported no onboard EQ. The controls and charging connection are placed in or around the unusually shaped soundhole; New Atlas found that arrangement less convenient than conventional side-mounted controls.

Battery condition matters. A depleted battery can remove the self-amplified effects even though the guitar’s passive acoustic voice remains available. The available specifications identify a 2500mAh/3.7V 18650 lithium battery, but they do not establish whether owners can replace it themselves or what current service support looks like.
Plugged-in performance
Acoustic Guitar found the pickup useful into an amplifier and recording rig. The signal avoided the nasal upper-mid emphasis common in some acoustic pickups, and the onboard microphone added a more natural sense of air. That makes the ME 2 practical for demos, rehearsal and informal amplification.
For a demanding stage setup, expectations should be lower. The absence of onboard EQ means less control over room-specific feedback and tonal shaping than a stage-oriented acoustic-electric system provides. Treat FreeBoost as a creative and practice feature, and the output system as a competent convenience rather than a complete professional rig.

Durability for real-world use
The ME 2 is especially appealing for camping, road trips, beaches, unstable household humidity and any situation where a wooden guitar would be inconvenient to maintain. Climate stability also makes it easier to leave the instrument accessible for spontaneous playing.
That does not make it waterproof or impact-proof. Avoid prolonged water exposure, protect it from theft and crushing forces, allow a cold instrument to acclimate before opening it in warm humid air, and do not assume the composite body protects the battery or electronics from extreme heat. Airline packing and carrier rules still require current confirmation.
Price, availability and ownership risk in 2026
| Price signal | Status and qualification |
|---|---|
| $799 | Historical street price listed in Acoustic Guitar’s June 5, 2020 review |
| $499 | Guitar Center listing observed August 16, 2026 for an orange FreeBoost model; marked sold out |
| $349 | Walmart result for a pink model; marked out of stock and not a reliable current market price |
The Guitar Center listing is a retailer snapshot, not a confirmed current manufacturer MSRP or evidence of broad availability. Check the exact model and generation, warranty terms and return policy before paying a premium on the used market.
Used-buying inspection
- Confirm the battery charges and that reverb, delay and chorus work at several settings.
- Test the output jack, onboard microphone and pickup through an amplifier.
- Inspect the Micro-USB port for looseness or corrosion.
- Check fret wear, neck straightness, intonation and action across the fingerboard.
- Look for impact damage to the body, neck, finish, tuners and electronics.
- Verify that the Ideal Bag is included and obtain a return option if possible.
- Ask the seller how battery replacement and service would be handled.
How it compares with other guitar types
| Alternative | Where it can be better | Where the ME 2 remains distinctive |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size wooden acoustic | More bass extension, air movement and traditional tonewood response | Much lighter, more compact and less sensitive to climate changes |
| Basic wooden travel guitar | Often cheaper and more familiar in feel | Composite stability and body-generated effects |
| Newer carbon-fiber travel guitar | Potentially newer electronics, stock and support | The ME 2’s particular neck, acoustic voice and FreeBoost implementation |
| Stage-focused acoustic-electric | More EQ, feedback control and performance connectivity | Self-contained practice effects and lower carrying weight |
Carbon-fiber competitors such as the Enya NOVA GO SP1, Enya X4 PRO, Enya Nova Go, Natasha carbon-fiber guitar and Donner Carbon X may offer different body sizes, electronics or availability. Their current prices and support were not established here, so compare the exact model rather than assuming every carbon-fiber guitar provides the ME 2’s FreeBoost system.
Who should buy the LAVA ME 2?
Strong fit
- Travelers who need a small, light instrument.
- Apartment players and songwriters who value immediate, low-volume practice.
- Players in humid, dry or rapidly changing climates.
- Musicians who specifically want reverb, delay and chorus without an amplifier.
- Owners seeking a compact everyday guitar rather than a purely emergency travel instrument.
Weak fit
- Bluegrass or ensemble players who need dreadnought-level low-end projection.
- Traditionalists who prioritize wood construction and tonewood character.
- Players who dislike short-scale geometry or unusual compound necks.
- Performers who require sophisticated stage EQ and feedback management.
- Buyers who cannot verify battery, electronics and service support on an older or used unit.
Final recommendation
Buy the ME 2 when portability, environmental stability, easy playability and self-contained effects are central to your decision. Skip it when the best conventional acoustic tone per dollar, maximum bass projection or a current, easily supported stage system matters more. Its surprise is real, but it comes from solving a particular set of problems—not from making a compact composite guitar sound identical to a full-size wooden one.
