Blue Ghost Captured Stunning Video of the Moon’s Far Side—Before Landing on the Near Side

Blue Ghost did film the Moon’s far side—but from lunar orbit before landing on the near side. Here is the date, altitude, terminology, timeline and mission context behind the video.

Yes—Blue Ghost captured the Moon’s far side, but not from the lunar surface. Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 recorded the footage from lunar orbit on February 24, 2025, after maneuvering into an approximately 100-kilometer-high near-circular orbit. The published sequence is a 10× time-lapse showing rugged terrain passing beneath the spacecraft, with Blue Ghost’s top deck, reaction-control thrusters, and radiator panels visible in the foreground. The lander later touched down near Mare Crisium on the Moon’s near side.

What the Blue Ghost video actually shows

The original footage was published by Firefly in its Blue Ghost Mission 1 mission updates. It is a spacecraft-mounted view from lunar orbit, not a panorama filmed by a lander sitting on the Moon.

  • Capture date: February 24, 2025.
  • Altitude: approximately 100 kilometers above the lunar surface.
  • Presentation: Firefly sped the sequence up by 10×, so it is not real-time video.
  • View: lunar terrain on the far side passing below Blue Ghost.
  • Visible hardware: the spacecraft’s top deck, reaction-control thrusters, and radiator panels.

The panels that appear to move are not evidence of damage or an editing error. Firefly said they were moving nominally as part of the spacecraft’s thermal-management system, helping protect onboard subsystems from extreme temperatures.

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day also identified the February 24 material as a view of the lunar far side from about 100 kilometers altitude.

“Dark side” is popular shorthand, but “far side” is correct

The phrase “dark side of the Moon” is understandable because the hemisphere is hidden from ordinary Earth-based views. Scientifically, however, NASA uses far side for the hemisphere that faces away from Earth and near side for the hemisphere that generally faces us.

The far side is not permanently dark. The Moon is tidally locked, so the same hemisphere generally faces Earth, but sunlight reaches both hemispheres as the Moon orbits Earth. A far-side region can be in daylight or lunar night just as a near-side region can. NASA explains the terminology in “Traveling to the Dark Side”.

So the accurate description is: Blue Ghost filmed terrain on the Moon’s far side from orbit; it did not film a permanently sunless “dark side.”

Date Mission event
January 15, 2025 Blue Ghost Mission 1 launched.
February 13, 2025 The spacecraft entered lunar orbit.
February 18, 2025 After its second lunar-orbit maneuver, Blue Ghost recorded far-side footage from approximately 120 kilometers above the surface.
February 24, 2025 A third maneuver placed the spacecraft in a near-circular orbit about 100 kilometers high. The featured 10× sequence was captured during this phase.
March 2, 2025 Blue Ghost landed upright near Mare Crisium on the lunar near side, at approximately 3:34 a.m. EST (08:34 UTC).
March 14, 2025 The lander photographed a total lunar eclipse from the surface.
Mid-March 2025 Surface operations ended after the lander worked through the lunar day and continued for several hours into lunar night, eventually exhausting available energy.

Firefly’s mission update, NASA’s pre-landing report, the landing announcement, and NASA’s later mission-conclusion report provide the timeline.

How the orbital flyover led to the landing

Blue Ghost spent time circling the Moon before descending. Its successive maneuvers reduced and circularized the orbit, giving mission controllers a controlled approach to the landing site. The far-side video therefore documents the approach phase, not a separate expedition to a far-side landing zone.

The final descent-orbit-insertion burn occurred while the spacecraft was behind the Moon, producing a communications blackout. NASA reported that communications resumed after Blue Ghost emerged from behind the Moon. The lander then completed its descent to Mare Crisium on the near side. NASA’s operational account is available in “Blue Ghost Is on Its Way”.

Why this footage matters

A commercial spacecraft perspective

The far side has been photographed and mapped by earlier missions, including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Blue Ghost did not provide humanity’s first view of it. Its distinction is the perspective: a commercial lunar lander’s own camera captured a clear, cinematic flyover while the vehicle was preparing for a landing.

Evidence that the vehicle was operating in lunar orbit

The moving terrain, visible spacecraft structure, and normal radiator motion show a working spacecraft collecting imagery during demanding orbital operations. The video is therefore both public outreach and a visual record of navigation, thermal control, and spacecraft performance.

A snapshot of NASA’s CLPS approach

Firefly operated Mission 1 under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. The mission delivered 10 NASA science and technology payloads, landed upright near Mare Crisium, and returned science and engineering data during surface operations. NASA’s landing account is at Touchdown: Carrying NASA Science, Firefly’s Blue Ghost Lands on Moon.

Do not confuse the far-side video with Blue Ghost’s other footage

Material When and where it was made What it shows
Far-side orbital flyover February 18 and February 24, 2025; from lunar orbit The far-side surface passing below Blue Ghost, including spacecraft hardware in the frame.
Landing sequence March 2, 2025; during descent and touchdown near Mare Crisium NASA’s SCALPSS 1.1 cameras recorded descent imagery and engine-plume interaction with the surface.
Surface eclipse imagery March 14, 2025; from the landed spacecraft A total lunar eclipse photographed from the Moon.
Sunset and final surface views Late in the mission; from Mare Crisium Surface conditions before the lander fell silent after lunar-night power loss.

SCALPSS 1.1 used four cameras taking images at eight frames per second to reconstruct the descent and plume–surface interaction. NASA describes that distinct landing record in NASA Cameras on Blue Ghost Capture First-of-its-Kind Moon Landing Footage. Those cameras should not be presented as the source of the far-side orbital time-lapse.

Was Blue Ghost the first spacecraft to see the far side?

No. Robotic spacecraft had photographed and mapped the far side decades before Mission 1. What was new about this release was the unusually direct, high-contrast view from a commercial lander during its own lunar-orbit approach. Calling it the first-ever far-side footage would overstate the achievement.

What Mission 1 accomplished beyond the video

Blue Ghost Mission 1 successfully delivered NASA payloads, landed upright, and operated through the lunar day. Its instruments collected science and technology data, while its cameras documented the landing environment, a lunar sunset, and an eclipse. The mission ended only after operations continued into lunar night and the available energy was exhausted, according to NASA’s mission-conclusion report.

What comes next for Blue Ghost

A planned Blue Ghost Mission 2 is intended to land on the lunar far side itself. NASA says that mission is designed to use Firefly’s Elytra Dark orbital vehicle for communications support, an important distinction because direct communication with Earth is blocked when a spacecraft is behind the Moon. Mission 2 is separate from Mission 1 and should not be used to describe where the first Blue Ghost landed. NASA’s current description is in its JPL report on future commercial lunar spacecraft.
