Yes—watch Kleo if what you miss about Killing Eve is a magnetic female assassin, darkly comic violence, unstable alliances, and stylish international intrigue. The comparison is useful, but Kleo is not a German remake or continuation. It is broader, more flamboyant, more openly pulpy, and rooted in the fall of East Germany.
The series follows Kleo Straub, a former East German operative betrayed by her own side. Netflix’s verified material covers two released seasons; season 2 premiered on July 25, 2024, with six episodes running about 45 minutes each. Check your local Netflix catalog before watching, since availability, pricing, audio, and subtitles vary by country and can change.

What is Kleo about?
Netflix’s official synopsis introduces Kleo as a highly trained East German spy and Stasi assassin. In 1987, she kills a businessman during a mission in West Berlin. She is then arrested by the Stasi on false or politically motivated accusations and spends two years in prison. When the Berlin Wall falls, she emerges into a radically changed Germany.
Kleo’s immediate goals are revenge, identifying the people who betrayed her, and understanding the forces surrounding a mysterious red suitcase. The premise combines a personal vendetta with the political dislocation of reunification, so the story is never just a sequence of assassination jobs. Kleo is trying to reclaim control of a life that her government, colleagues, and history treated as disposable.

Why the Killing Eve comparison works
A charismatic killer drives the story
Kleo, like Villanelle, is not interesting merely because she is effective. Her anger, humor, improvisation, style, and emotional damage make every encounter unpredictable. The show asks you to remain invested in someone who can be frightening and funny in the same scene.
Violence is stylish and often absurd
Both series place brutality beside dark comedy rather than treating espionage as solemn tradecraft. Kleo favors bold set pieces, eccentric behavior, and visual exaggeration. The humor is intentionally strange; it is part of the show’s identity, not a brief relief from a serious plot.

Alliances keep shifting
The pleasure comes from pursuit, betrayal, competing agendas, and the question of who is manipulating whom. Kleo’s enemies and temporary allies rarely fit a stable good-versus-evil pattern.
International intrigue enlarges the personal story
Both dramas use cross-border intelligence networks and institutional conspiracies to turn a relationship-driven thriller into a larger political game. In Kleo, the East German setting gives those conspiracies a specific historical pressure.
Morality is deliberately unstable
Kleo is neither a conventional hero nor a secretly harmless antihero. The series lets her be lethal, damaged, absurd, and vulnerable without asking you to excuse her actions.
How Kleo differs from Killing Eve
| Element | Kleo | Killing Eve |
|---|---|---|
| Story engine | Revenge, betrayal, Cold War secrets, and political transition | Obsession, pursuit, and the evolving Eve–Villanelle relationship |
| Setting | East Germany and the aftermath of the Berlin Wall’s fall | Contemporary international intelligence operations |
| Tone | Broad, colorful, eccentric, and heightened | Darkly comic, often more restrained and psychologically intimate |
| Emotional focus | Kleo’s identity, institutional betrayal, and revenge | Mutual fascination, desire, identity, and pursuit |
| Visual identity | Retro fashion, pop-inflected action, and bold period design | Fashion-forward international thriller aesthetics |
| Language | Primarily German, with international settings and dialogue | Primarily English, with multilingual scenes |
| Realism | Heightened pulp; momentum and style often outrank procedural plausibility | Stylized, but generally more focused on psychological subtext |
If your favorite part of Killing Eve was the exact Eve–Villanelle emotional dynamic, Kleo may feel less intimate and more chaotic. If you want another dangerous, entertaining assassin with a strong visual point of view, the differences are advantages.

Who is Kleo Straub?
Kleo’s Stasi training made her exceptionally competent and willing to use violence, but the series is less interested in presenting her as an invincible machine than in showing what institutional abandonment does to her. She improvises instead of following a clean spy-thriller playbook, and her anger frequently collides with flashes of humor or uncertainty.
That combination—professional lethal skill alongside a fractured personal identity—keeps her from becoming a simple “female Jason Bourne” or “German Villanelle.” Her historical circumstances matter: she was made by a state, betrayed by it, and released when that state was disappearing.
Sven Petzold is more than a sidekick
Sven, played by Dimitrij Schaad, is a West Berlin police officer who becomes entangled with Kleo. He is a counterpoint to her instincts and methods, a source of friction and occasional comic contrast, and a semi-reluctant partner. Their interactions dramatize the former East/West German divide through personal behavior rather than exposition.
Netflix’s season 2 material describes Sven as trying to redeem himself in Kleo’s eyes and work with her again. His presence makes the series less solitary than a straightforward revenge thriller and gives Kleo someone who can challenge, misunderstand, and occasionally support her.

What season 2 adds
Season 2 expands the story beyond Berlin. The hunt for the red suitcase takes Kleo into Belgrade and Moscow, while the CIA and KGB pursue the same object. The suitcase’s contents have consequences for the reorganization of Germany and Europe after the Cold War, linking Kleo’s private history to international political stakes.
The season also digs further into why Kleo was imprisoned and what she has been kept from knowing about her own past. Sven continues trying to work with her, while Uwe remains fanatically loyal to the former German Democratic Republic. Netflix describes the season as a blend of action, thriller, drama, and comedy, with eccentric design and unpredictable turns.
Spoiler warning: The suitcase, Kleo’s imprisonment, and the explanation for her betrayal are central mysteries. The details are best discovered in the episodes rather than summarized in a recommendation.

Is Kleo actually good?
It is a strong recommendation for viewers who accept heightened storytelling. Jella Haase gives Kleo a forceful lead performance, and the show has a distinctive protagonist, fast pacing, vivid production design, and a historical setting rarely used in mainstream spy television.
Netflix cites a Grimme Award in fiction, German Television Awards for Best Drama Series and Best Actress, and a Critics Choice nomination. Those honors indicate recognition, not a guarantee that the series will match every viewer’s taste. Rotten Tomatoes’ season 2 review summary says the show retains its “zippy energy” while giving its character drama increasing importance: season 2 page and season 2 reviews.
Reasons to watch
- Haase’s charismatic, morally complicated performance.
- A fast, binge-friendly plot with frequent tonal surprises.
- Stylish action and memorable retro production design.
- A Cold War and reunification setting that gives the revenge story historical texture.
- A willingness to be flamboyant, funny, and structurally unpredictable.
Reasons to adjust your expectations
- The comedy can be deliberately exaggerated or cartoonish.
- Momentum and pulp conventions sometimes matter more than realistic intelligence procedure.
- The conspiracy may feel less plausible than a grounded spy drama.
- The character relationships receive less sustained two-hander focus than Eve and Villanelle’s bond.
- Its moral ambiguity is playful rather than relentlessly bleak.
Which Killing Eve fans are most likely to enjoy it?

Proceed with reservations if you mainly liked

- A more realistic portrayal of intelligence agencies.
It may not be for you if you want
- A realism-first espionage procedural.
- A conventional heroic protagonist.

- A direct continuation of Killing Eve’s characters or story.

Kleo is best treated as a companion to Killing Eve, not a replacement. Killing Eve is more psychologically centered on obsession and mutual fascination; Kleo is more flamboyant, revenge-oriented, historically specific, and plot-driven. That makes it a particularly good choice when you want the energy of a stylish female assassin but are willing to trade restrained subtext for eccentric humor, Cold War politics, and pulp momentum.
