Short answer: Meta’s Facebook and Instagram Reels can now be translated into supported languages with an AI-generated dub designed to retain the creator’s sound and tone. An optional lip-sync setting adjusts visible mouth movements. The feature launched on August 19, 2025, with English–Spanish translation and has since expanded; access, languages and controls still vary by platform, country and account. Meta describes it as free for eligible creators.
What Meta’s Reels translation actually does
This is more than translated captions. When a creator enables the feature, Meta’s system can:
- Transcribe the spoken dialogue.
- Translate it into a supported language.
- Generate a dubbed track intended to mimic the creator’s sound and tone.
- Optionally adjust visible mouth movements to fit the translated speech.
The lip-sync adjustment is optional. A translated Reel is labeled “Translated with Meta AI”, so viewers are not meant to mistake the synthetic performance for an original recording. Meta’s description of the feature and its initial rollout is available in its August 19, 2025 announcement.

Supported languages in 2026
Meta’s published updates confirm or report support for English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi. Additional expansion announcements cover French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. These announcements do not mean every language is active for every account on both services.

Who can use it?
- Instagram: Public accounts in countries where Meta AI is available.
- Facebook: Creators with at least 1,000 followers in countries where Meta AI is available.
- Cost: Meta describes the translation feature as free for eligible users.
Those are published eligibility terms, not a guarantee that the control has reached a particular account. App version, account status, region and staged rollout can affect access.
How to enable AI dubbing
- Create or upload a Reel and continue to the pre-publishing screen.
- Select “Translate your voice with Meta AI.”
- Choose an available target language or languages.
- Turn lip-sync on or off separately.
- Preview the translated version when a preview is offered.
- Approve it, reject it, or publish the original without the translation.
- After publication, remove a translated version without deleting the original when that control is available.
Labels can move as the apps change. Facebook’s relevant voice-translation workflow is documented as mobile-only in the Facebook Help Center; desktop and Business Suite controls may not match the phone interface.

Controls for creators and viewers
Creator controls
- Enable or disable translation.
- Enable or disable lip-sync independently.
- Review a preview where Meta supplies one.
- Reject or remove a translated version while keeping the original Reel.
- Use language-specific Insights when those metrics are available.
Viewer controls
Viewers can use the Reel’s audio and language controls, including “Don’t translate,” to keep a preferred original language. The translated label helps identify an AI-generated version. Meta describes these controls in its product announcement.
What makes a Reel easier to translate
The tool is best suited to clear, face-to-camera speech. For stronger results:
- Face the camera and keep your mouth visible.
- Speak clearly at a steady pace.
- Reduce music and background noise under the dialogue.
- Avoid people talking over one another.
- Keep the number of speakers low and test a short sample first.
Music-heavy edits, rapid delivery, slang, strong accents, code-switching, jokes and crowded conversations can produce awkward wording or timing. Third-party coverage has described suitable clips with up to two speakers, but that is not a universal quality guarantee; treat speaker separation as a test condition, not a promise.

Limitations and risks to check before publishing
Translation quality
There is no independent accuracy benchmark established here. Check names, places, technical terms, gender and formality, idioms, sarcasm, captions and dubbed audio before publishing. Human review is especially important for factual, branded or regulated material.
Voice consent
The system uses characteristics of a speaker’s voice. If a Reel includes employees, guests, customers, children, actors or interview subjects, obtain appropriate permission before creating a synthetic translation. Uploading a video does not automatically settle every person’s voice-use rights.

Watch for mouth shapes that miss consonants, delayed or early movement, distorted teeth or facial edges, expressions that do not fit the new delivery, and phrases whose translated timing is substantially longer. If the effect is distracting, turn lip-sync off and use dubbed audio or subtitles.

Sensitive subject matter
Do not rely on automatic dubbing alone for legal, medical, financial, safety-critical, political or news content. A mistranslated instruction or claim can matter more than the production speed gained.

For Facebook Pages, Meta introduced a way to upload up to 20 translated audio tracks to one Reel. That creates a middle option between automatic dubbing and publishing separate language versions: a creator can commission a translator or voice actor and attach the resulting tracks. Meta announced this option in its initial rollout details.
This option should not be assumed to exist on Instagram. Third-party reporting has also described a possible restriction when a Reel already uses Meta AI dubbing; verify the current Business Suite workflow before planning a production process.

Meta’s free option is not a substitute for approved terminology, a human-reviewed script, controlled voice talent or a reusable multilingual master. Paid software pricing and capabilities change, so check the vendors’ current pages before committing.
Bottom line for creators
Meta’s AI dubbing is a practical first test for eligible Facebook and Instagram creators who want to reach another language quickly. Use the preview and review every version, keep the disclosure visible, and disable lip-sync when it looks unnatural. Move to human translation or professional dubbing when accuracy, cultural nuance, voice rights or brand control matters more than speed.
