Netflix announced on December 19, 2025, that it was acquiring Estonia-based avatar platform Ready Player Me. Netflix said the technology could let subscribers carry a personal avatar or fandom across multiple games. The announcement did not include a consumer launch date, supported-game list, subscription requirement, or acquisition price. As of August 18, 2026, there is no verified evidence that Netflix has released a cross-game avatar system to subscribers.
What Netflix bought
Ready Player Me built infrastructure for creating customizable digital avatars and using them across supported games and virtual worlds. It was an identity and avatar platform, not a conventional game publisher or entertainment catalog.
Netflix said it was acquiring Ready Player Me’s development tools and infrastructure and bringing approximately 20 employees into Netflix. The financial terms were not disclosed. TechCrunch later corrected an earlier description of the founder transition: only CTO Rainer Selvet was confirmed to be joining among the four founders. TechCrunch’s acquisition report also said Ready Player Me had raised $72 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Endeavor, Konvoy Ventures, Plural and angel investors associated with Roblox, Twitch and King Games. That $72 million is venture funding, not the price Netflix paid.

Why avatars fit Netflix’s gaming push
Netflix’s gaming strategy has been moving beyond a primarily mobile-game offering toward games played on televisions, party and family experiences, narrative titles and other mainstream formats. A common identity layer could help Netflix connect those separate experiences instead of asking every game team to build its own avatar system.

A persistent reason to return
A recognizable persona can give players continuity when they move among several titles. That may support repeat play and stronger engagement, although Netflix has not disclosed a retention, subscriber-growth or revenue target tied to the acquisition.
A bridge to Netflix fandom
Avatars could eventually express attachment to Netflix shows, films and game worlds. A player might carry a persona associated with a franchise into a party game or another supported title, subject to each game’s design and licensing rules.
Useful on shared screens
Persistent identities may be especially valuable in multiplayer and party games played on televisions, where several people need clear, recognizable profiles. This is a strategic implication of the deal, not a feature Netflix has announced.

What “cross-game avatar” could mean
Interoperability does not necessarily mean that an identical 3D model, animation set, clothing item or body proportion will appear unchanged everywhere. A plausible system would work like this:
- The player creates or selects an avatar.
- The avatar is associated with the player’s Netflix account.
- Each supported game translates that identity into its own art style, body rig and technical format.
- The player’s appearance or persona persists across the supported titles.
This describes the direction Netflix outlined, not a currently available subscriber workflow. The acquisition announcement did not establish whether avatars would be cosmetic only, appear during gameplay, or be limited to menus, profiles or multiplayer sessions. Netflix’s stated rationale was reported by TechCrunch.
What Netflix has not announced
- A consumer launch date.
- The first supported game or a launch lineup.
- Whether the feature would work in mobile games, television games, or both.
- Whether licensed games would participate.
- Where users would see avatars: profiles, menus, multiplayer sessions or gameplay.
- Required Netflix plan, device, controller, account type or region.
- The available customization options or whether avatars would be 2D or 3D.
Until Netflix supplies those details, subscribers should not assume that an avatar creator is available in the Netflix app or that a Ready Player Me character can be imported into Netflix games.

Ready Player Me’s public services shut down
The acquisition had an immediate consequence for existing users and developers: Ready Player Me’s public services were discontinued on January 31, 2026. The company’s developer-forum notice said services would become unavailable beginning that date, and the official website confirms the shutdown. The closure included the online avatar-creation tool PlayerZero.
For developers, this created a migration and service-continuity problem. Studios that had integrated Ready Player Me had to consider replacement technology, migration options or whether their existing implementation would continue to function. The verified fact is that the public services ended; available reporting does not establish that every third-party integration stopped in exactly the same way or at the same time.
The strategic trade-offs
Interoperability versus Netflix control
Ready Player Me’s original appeal was portability across many developers and virtual worlds. Under Netflix ownership, the technology may be optimized for Netflix’s own games. That could make integration more coherent for Netflix while reducing the independence or breadth developers previously expected from a general-purpose platform.

One system versus many game constraints
Cross-game avatars must handle different engines, animation rigs, body proportions, graphics capabilities, age ratings, content rules, moderation systems and device limits. Brand licensing can also restrict which clothing or character elements are allowed in a particular game. “Carry your avatar” therefore does not guarantee identical visuals or identical capabilities in every title.
Platform dependence
The shutdown demonstrates the risk of building on a privately operated identity layer. Developers can lose access to a service after an acquisition even when their own games remain active. Export tools, migration periods and clear support commitments would determine how disruptive that risk becomes for future partners.

Netflix serves families and children, so any eventual avatar product would need clear answers about account linking, parental controls, moderation and deletion. Important questions include whether a child’s avatar could appear in multiplayer spaces, how impersonation and harassment would be handled, and whether users could export or delete identity data.

A selfie-based creation process could also raise facial-image or biometric-data questions, but Netflix has not said that its proposed system would use selfies or collect biometric information. Those are product questions, not established features.
Is this a metaverse acquisition?
Ready Player Me was associated with interoperable avatars and virtual worlds, but Netflix’s disclosed rationale was gaming and subscriber identity. Calling the deal a confirmed metaverse strategy goes beyond the available evidence. The narrower and better-supported interpretation is that Netflix bought avatar infrastructure and talent for a broader, multi-device gaming platform.
What the acquisition must prove
The technology will matter only if Netflix integrates it into enough games for players to notice and use it. The key tests are whether Netflix delivers a public product, supports more than a small group of titles, provides a consistent account experience across mobile and television play, and gives developers a workable path to adoption.
If avatars appear only as profile images or branded cosmetics in a few games, the acquisition may add polish without changing how Netflix games are used. If they become a reliable identity that follows players across social and party experiences, they could help Netflix make a collection of games feel more like a connected platform.
Bottom line
Netflix acquired Ready Player Me’s avatar technology and brought in much of its team to strengthen the infrastructure behind its gaming ambitions. The intended cross-game identity layer is plausible, but it remains an announced direction rather than a released subscriber feature. Meanwhile, Ready Player Me’s public services—including PlayerZero—ended on January 31, 2026, leaving developers to manage the consequences of the platform’s transition from an independent service to Netflix-owned technology.
