- Memory stores persistent, high-level story facts.
- Author’s Note supplies a stronger near-generation instruction about tone, direction, or immediate priorities.
- Lorebook entries add world details when their keys activate, or can be configured as always-on.
- Generation settings, model or module choices, and context controls let experienced users inspect and tune what the model receives.
These systems are documented in NovelAI’s text glossary. A Lorebook is not automatically present in every prompt: activation keys, insertion positions, and context limits determine whether an entry is included.
Images and export

AI Dungeon’s memory documentation says that after an adventure reaches 12 actions, the oldest six actions are summarized into the first Memory. This automation is convenient, but a summary can omit or distort a detail, so important canon still needs checking.

Writing quality: compare the workflow, not an imaginary universal winner
There is no documented basis for declaring one service’s prose universally “smarter.” Output depends on the selected model, prompt, context construction, genre, and how much control the user exercises.
Where NovelAI fits best
NovelAI’s manual controls suit literary passages, fan fiction, romance, horror, fantasy, and other prose where the writer wants to preserve point of view, sentence rhythm, formatting, and plot authority. You can ask for a continuation without surrendering the entire narrative to an adventure engine.
Where AI Dungeon fits best

- Whether the AI waits for the player or invents major events uninvited.

- Control through Memory, Author’s Note, Lorebook or Story Cards, model selection, and sampling settings.
A larger advertised context does not guarantee better writing. Irrelevant instructions can crowd out useful text, summaries can be wrong, and a model may prioritize recent passages over older facts.

Failure cases to test
- A character introduced 50 or 100 actions earlier.
- A fictional place with a specific rule.
- A secret known by only one character.
- A long inventory or a gradually changing relationship.
- Multiple points of view and deliberate contradictions used as plot twists.
Both systems can blend characters, invent an absent detail, or treat a mistaken summary as fact. Keep a short canonical fact sheet, correct errors immediately, and periodically review summaries, Lorebook entries, or Story Cards.

Compare style, model controls, character consistency, editing and reference-image workflows, and the number of images your plan actually covers. “Unlimited images” is not a safe blanket description for either service.

AI Dungeon is the clear choice for ongoing free experimentation because Wanderer is an established free tier. Its lower context, memory, and model access do not equal the paid experience.
NovelAI offers a limited Paper trial rather than a continuing free plan. A verified account receives 50 text generations, 30 image generations up to 1024×1024, and 100 text-to-speech generations. Trial content and settings can be carried over after subscribing, according to the FAQ.
Privacy, storage, and account risk
NovelAI’s published position
NovelAI’s FAQ says text-generation data is locally encrypted, and that prompts, uploads, edits, and image generations are not logged or stored on its side. It also says images are not retained after leaving or refreshing the generation page unless downloaded. Stories are remotely stored with local encryption, so losing the account email or password can permanently block access.
The terms effective December 8, 2025 add an important qualification: input images may be temporarily cached for some image-generation operations. Therefore, “private” should mean a documented privacy posture, not a promise that no processing system ever handles data.

AI Dungeon’s terms were revised April 22, 2026. Read the current terms of service and privacy documentation for provisions on storage, logging, abuse monitoring, human review, model training, temporary caches, and third-party processors. AI Dungeon gets beginners into an adventure quickly: choose a scenario, take an action, and let the system manage much of the story administration. Its community content is useful when you do not want to build a setting yourself.
