Instagram tested a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode that lets selected users keep watching a Reel in a small floating window while using another app. Reports published on August 28 and September 2, 2025 describe a limited experiment—not a confirmed, universal release.
As of August 18, 2026, the available reporting still does not establish a rollout date, supported countries, device requirements, or eligibility for every Instagram account.
What Instagram Reels Picture-in-Picture means
Picture-in-Picture keeps a video playing in a movable mini-player after you leave the main viewing screen or switch to another app. In the reported Instagram experiment, a user could start a Reel, move to another task such as messaging or browsing, and continue seeing the Reel in a floating window.
This is viewing PiP. It is not an editing effect for placing one video inside another. The distinction matters because “picture-in-picture” is also used for video-creation layouts. The Instagram test concerned playback only, as Social Media Today reported.

What Instagram actually tested
Instagram confirmed the experiment to technology publications after sightings by app researcher Radu Oncescu. TechCrunch’s September 2, 2025 report described selected users continuing to watch Reels outside Instagram in a floating window.
According to the reports, some participants received an invitation or prompt to try PiP. A related switch reportedly appeared in Reels playback settings. The test was limited to a small group, and neither report established that every Reel, account, or device supported it.

- Open Instagram and play a Reel.
- Look for an in-app invitation to try Picture-in-Picture.
- If the invitation appears, open the Reel’s playback settings.
- Turn on the PiP option, if the switch is present.
- Leave the relevant Instagram viewing context and check whether the Reel continues in a floating window.
There is no documented public opt-in program or reliable manual activation method. An updated app can contain the necessary code without your account being included in a server-controlled experiment.
If Picture-in-Picture is missing or stops
- Update Instagram through your device’s official app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Check for an in-app invitation and inspect Reels playback settings.
- Confirm that your phone’s operating system supports system-level PiP behavior.
- Try another Reel; behavior can differ by content or playback state.
- If the option is absent, treat that as a likely eligibility or rollout limitation rather than proof that Instagram is malfunctioning.
- Do not install modified Instagram apps or “PiP unlock” tools. They create security and account risks and cannot be treated as official activation methods.
- Reinstalling Instagram is not a dependable way to activate a server-side experiment.
Common failure modes
- No prompt or toggle: Your account may not be in the test, or Instagram may have withdrawn it.
- PiP starts, then stops: The Reel, operating system, account, or background-playback state may not support continuous playback.
- No audio: Other media, calls, headphones, device settings, or app restrictions may take priority.
- The feature disappears: Experimental features can be changed or removed without notice.
Why Instagram might want PiP
Potential viewer benefits
- Continue a tutorial, recipe, interview, or explainer while replying to messages or using another app.
- Reduce the friction of repeatedly switching between Instagram and another task.
- Make longer spoken-word or instructional Reels easier to follow during multitasking.
Possible platform and creator benefits
PiP could make longer videos more practical and may help keep viewers with a Reel instead of ending playback when they multitask. That could support viewing time or retention, and it would give Instagram a feature associated with competing video services. These are product hypotheses, not measured outcomes: the published reports provide no verified uplift figure.

Trade-offs
- A floating window can be distracting and may use additional battery and mobile data.
- Small-window playback can make captions, text, and visual details harder to read.
- Listeners may continue a Reel without liking, commenting, following, or sharing.
- Creators should not assume PiP improves ranking, reach, completion rate, or monetization; no published creator analytics establish that result.
Instagram versus TikTok and YouTube
When Instagram began testing PiP, coverage described TikTok and YouTube as already offering some form of the functionality. The services should not be treated as identical: operating-system rules, regions, accounts, subscriptions, content types, and app implementations can change how PiP behaves.
| Question | Instagram in the reported test | TikTok and YouTube comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Limited experiment confirmed by reports citing Instagram | Reported as already supporting PiP in some form |
| Purpose | Continue watching Reels while multitasking | Continue watching video outside the main app |
| Universal availability | Not established | Depends on platform, device, region, account, and content |
| Behavior | Exact controls and restrictions were not documented | Not necessarily equivalent across services |
What remains unknown
- A general-release date or confirmation that the feature launched for everyone.
- Supported countries and regions.
- Minimum iOS or Android versions, tablet support, and desktop-web support.
- Whether all Reels qualify, or whether length, format, or account status matters.
- Whether playback continues with the phone locked or as audio only.
- How captions, comments, likes, scrubbing, and other controls work in the floating player.
- Whether PiP changes creator analytics, ranking, reach, or monetization.
Bottom line
Instagram was testing playback Picture-in-Picture for Reels: a floating window that lets selected users keep watching while using another app. The August–September 2025 reports confirm an experiment, not a universal launch. If your account shows the prompt or playback toggle, you can try it; if it does not, there is no verified way to force-enable the feature, and its absence does not by itself indicate a broken app.
