The developer’s release history dates it to April 2, 2025. It imports film information and artwork, tracks ownership and watched status, finds local video files and can launch them in an external player. It is no longer the newest EMDB release: the official history lists version 5.41, released February 2, 2026, as current on August 18, 2026.
What EMDB is
EMDB means Eric’s Movie Database. It is a desktop collection manager, not a streaming service, social film network or hosted media server. You build a searchable local catalog of discs, downloaded files, TV series and episodes, then add details such as titles, artwork, plot, cast, directors, writers, ratings, ownership and seen status.
The application can maintain separate databases or organized collections, making it practical to separate physical discs, digital files or family libraries. Playback remains local: EMDB records a file location and opens the file with an external player rather than streaming it from EMDB’s servers.

The April 3 date on the Tweakers page is a publication or indexing date, not necessarily a second software build. Tweakers’ listing identifies Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility, but that operating-system claim comes from the third-party listing rather than a version-specific compatibility guarantee from the developer: tweakers.net/downloads/72210/emdb-536.html.
“5.36” can also mean the initial release or the maintenance branch containing 5.36.01, 5.36.02 and 5.36.03. Check the exact build number when reproducing an old setup or comparing behavior. None of those labels should be presented as the current EMDB version.
Everything changed in EMDB 5.36
IMDb import corrections
- Movie certifications import correctly.
- Cast members, directors, writers and composers import more reliably.
- Actors without character information are moved lower in the imported cast list.
These fixes address the reality that EMDB depends on data supplied by external sites. A later change to IMDb, a missing field or a language-specific record can still produce incomplete results.
Interface and TV Mode

- Fixes TV Mode sometimes failing to show the selected movie when it starts.
- Adds an option to hide Rotten Tomatoes scores in the details panel.

Database, playback and export
- Playing a media file no longer increments play count when the corresponding entry is locked against modification. That is intentional lock behavior, not necessarily a playback failure.
- Fixes the Seen field in HTML export.
- Copied thumbnails are no longer always written with lowercase filenames.
The release-history notes that a Version field for printable or exportable output was planned for a subsequent release; it should not be treated as a 5.36 feature.

What you can do with EMDB
Build a detailed catalog
Add films or series by searching, then edit titles, artwork, plot information, cast and crew, ratings, media details, ownership and watched status. Search and filtering make a large local collection easier to browse than folders alone.
Import metadata from several sources
EMDB has used IMDb and TheMovieDb, while third-party coverage also identifies MovieMeter and TheTVDB. The sources are not interchangeable. TheMovieDb is useful for localized plot outlines, artwork and trailers; IMDb can provide certifications, particular movie data and IMDb-specific rankings. Changing source can therefore alter titles, artwork, plots, identifiers, ratings and cast fields. Review source settings before refreshing an established catalog.

Find and launch local files
EMDB can scan a computer for video files, try to identify them and associate them with catalog entries. Recognition depends heavily on the filename and folder context, so ambiguous, foreign-language, remastered or multi-cut releases often need manual correction. A successful match still requires the file to remain available at its recorded location.
Use TV Mode
TV Mode presents artwork and media information in a full-screen, television-style interface controlled by a keyboard or remote-like input. It is a browsing layer for your local catalog, not a replacement for a media server: the documented behavior centers on selecting an entry and opening locally available media in an external player.

Export, print and separate collections
HTML export and printing are available, and the 5.36 export fix restores the Seen field. Multiple databases and collection organization help separate discs, digital files or users, but they do not provide cloud synchronization or collaborative household accounts.
How to obtain 5.36 safely
- Start at the developer’s site, emdb.sooftware.com/windows, and check the current release first.
- If you specifically need 5.36 for archival, compatibility or reproducibility reasons, use the official version history at emdb.eu/whats-new.html to identify the intended build.
- Prefer a developer-hosted package. Treat download-archive pages as mirrors or historical references, not the primary authority.
- Confirm whether the file is the original 5.36 build or 5.36.01, 5.36.02 or 5.36.03, and distinguish an installer from a portable repackaging.
- Back up the entire EMDB database before opening it in a different version, changing metadata sources or performing bulk updates.
- For an important collection, test with a duplicate database first and verify artwork, file paths, watched status and collection assignments.
Available documentation does not establish a universal checksum, digital-signature procedure or lossless compatibility guarantee between every old and new database build. Do not infer those assurances from a mirror’s “scanned” or “portable” label.

Later releases exist partly because external metadata services change. Upgrading may improve reliability, but the available evidence does not promise that every database migrates without loss. Preserve an untouched backup and verify a copy before committing to a change.
Limitations to understand before committing your collection
- Windows focus: the evidence supports Windows availability; it does not establish native macOS, Linux, Android, iOS or web clients.
- External metadata dependence: imports can fail or change when IMDb, TheMovieDb or another provider changes its site, API, localization or fields.
- Filename-sensitive matching: poorly named files, remakes and alternate cuts may be identified incorrectly.
- Local playback model: EMDB tracks and launches files you can access; it is not a remote streaming or transcoding platform.
- No demonstrated cloud collaboration: the product description does not establish multi-device synchronization, household accounts or remote library access.
- Interface preference: a third-party reviewer characterizes the interface as dated; that is a subjective assessment, not a performance measurement.
Common problems and practical fixes
Wrong movie imported
Ambiguous titles, remakes, foreign-language names and missing years are common causes. Search manually, confirm year and artwork, edit the record, and test a small sample before batch updates.
Missing cast or crew
5.36 fixes several IMDb fields, but source-side, language-specific or later website changes can still leave gaps. Compare another configured source and correct important entries manually.

Play count does not change
Check whether the entry is locked. In 5.36, playing a file does not update play count for a locked record.
TV Mode selects the wrong visible item
5.36 fixes the startup-selection problem. If it remains, verify that the installed package is genuinely 5.36 or later rather than a mislabeled mirror.
Local files are not recognized
Improve filename and folder clarity, then use manual matching or correction. Automatic identification is not guaranteed for every file.

Bottom line
EMDB 5.36 is legitimate historical Windows freeware released on April 2, 2025. It remains useful for a local movie and TV catalog, metadata, ownership tracking and links to files, but it is not current: the official history lists 5.41 as of August 18, 2026. Install 5.36 when you have a specific archival or compatibility reason; otherwise begin with the newest official release and protect your database with a backup before changing versions or refreshing metadata.
