It was the former name of DIRECTV’s internet-delivered live-TV service, which passed through the names DIRECTV NOW, AT&T TV NOW and AT&T TV before being sold under DIRECTV branding, generally as DIRECTV STREAM. You could not sign up for a new “AT&T TV NOW” plan under that name.
What happened to AT&T TV NOW?
The service changed names as its ownership and product packaging changed. The broad concept remained live television delivered over an internet connection rather than through a satellite dish, but plans, billing systems, equipment and customer terms could differ by generation.

DIRECTV explains the brand transition on its AT&T TV transition page. Legacy customers could retain different plans, prices, equipment or billing arrangements, so “AT&T TV NOW became DIRECTV STREAM” describes the product lineage, not necessarily an identical account migration for every subscriber.
Could new customers subscribe to AT&T TV NOW in February 2024?
No. The name was still visible in old help pages, search results, community posts, channel-lineup PDFs and account references, but those remnants did not represent a separately purchasable February 2024 service. The relevant successor was DIRECTV STREAM or another DIRECTV internet-TV package.

Why old pages cause confusion
- Historical AT&T TV NOW prices and channel lists remain indexed.
- Customers and forum users often use the old name when discussing the successor.
- AT&T and DIRECTV logins, billing pages and equipment references may preserve historical terminology.
- Old screenshots can show controls, prices or packages that no longer applied.
What was DIRECTV STREAM?
DIRECTV STREAM was a live-TV service delivered through broadband internet. It did not inherently require a satellite dish. Depending on package and market, it offered live broadcast and cable networks, local stations, regional sports networks, on-demand programs and cloud DVR access through an app or compatible streaming device. Do not automatically treat every newer “DIRECTV via Internet” or Gemini hardware offer as the same commercial product as a legacy, app-only DIRECTV STREAM subscription. Hardware leases, promotional terms, billing and channel packaging can differ.
February 2024 plan prices
The following are reported prices around February 2024, not a current rate card. They came from a contemporary comparison discussion rather than an archived official DIRECTV price sheet, so use them as a historical snapshot.

These figures were listed in a February 2024 comparison discussion. The final bill could be higher because of taxes, a Regional Sports Fee, premium add-ons, promotional expiration, price changes or equipment charges on certain DIRECTV products. A base price was not a guarantee of the amount charged to every ZIP code or account.
Channels, local stations and regional sports
Channel categories
Package lineups generally combined major broadcast networks where available, national news, ESPN and other sports networks, entertainment and lifestyle channels, and premium networks on higher tiers or as add-ons. There was no single permanent channel list for every subscriber.
Local channels
Local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and other affiliates were available where DIRECTV had the necessary market agreement. Check your ZIP code before subscribing; “locals included” did not mean every affiliate was available nationwide. DIRECTV’s package page and lineup PDF provide the relevant availability qualifications.

Regional sports networks
Regional sports were a major reason to consider the service, but access depended on the package, your ZIP code and current rights agreements. Choice and higher tiers were the relevant later-era tiers for many RSNs, but a package could advertise sports without carrying the network that showed your team. A Regional Sports Fee could materially increase the monthly total. Compare the complete bill, not just the advertised tier price.
How did the DVR work?
Cloud DVR stored recordings online instead of on a household set-top recorder. It was a central feature of the streaming product, but exact storage limits and expiration rules varied across plan generations and legacy accounts. Current DIRECTV materials describe unlimited cloud DVR with recordings expiring after nine months; that current rule should not be presented as a verified February 2024 specification for every AT&T TV NOW or DIRECTV STREAM account. Check the terms attached to the specific plan.
Supported devices and simultaneous streams
Compatibility broadly included Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV/Google TV devices, Samsung and LG smart TVs, phones, tablets and web browsers, plus DIRECTV streaming hardware where offered. Supported models and app versions change. DIRECTV’s transition and app information points users to current device compatibility and confirms app distribution through iOS and Google Play. An old AT&T TV NOW device was not guaranteed to support the current app.

Streaming limits also changed by product generation and account terms. A DIRECTV transition page describes up to three concurrent streams subject to restrictions, but that should not be treated as a universal, verified February 2024 rule for every account.

Legacy DIRECTV STREAM-style subscriptions were generally marketed as cancel-anytime internet streaming plans and did not require a satellite dish. Newer DIRECTV internet packages that include Gemini hardware, promotional pricing or equipment can have different terms. Read the exact offer before ordering; “DIRECTV” is not one uniform contract structure. Current offer language is available through DIRECTV’s streaming deals and package terms.
Internet requirements
Because delivery was online, reliable broadband was essential. A capped, congested or unstable connection could produce buffering, reduced picture quality or failed streams even when the account and device were working correctly.

How to cancel a legacy or successor streaming account
- Sign in to the DIRECTV account that is actually billed.
- Open account or plan management and choose Manage Plan, Cancel or the equivalent current control.
- Complete the confirmation prompts rather than simply closing the app.
- Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot.
- Check the stated end date. Streaming service commonly remains available through the paid billing cycle, while exact treatment depends on the account terms.

- you signed into a different AT&T or DIRECTV account;
- billing runs through a third party;
- the account is satellite service or a DIRECTV internet/device package rather than legacy STREAM;
- a promotional device or agreement has separate obligations; or
- the request was made after a billing date.
Uninstalling the television or phone app does not cancel billing.
Who was DIRECTV STREAM a good fit for?
- Consider it if you needed a broad cable-style lineup, specific regional sports networks, cloud recording or a satellite-free replacement for pay TV.
- Be cautious if your priority was the lowest monthly bill, a small number of channels, purely on-demand viewing or guaranteed access to every local affiliate.
- Check first if your broadband is unreliable, your ZIP code has limited local or regional-sports rights, or you are comparing an old plan with a new hardware bundle.
Alternatives to the former AT&T TV NOW service
Compare alternatives by required channels, local affiliates, regional sports, DVR rules and the full monthly total:
- YouTube TV — broad general live-TV positioning and wide device support.
- Hulu + Live TV — combines live channels with Hulu’s on-demand catalog.
- Sling TV — often more price-focused, with more selective locals and sports.
- Fubo — sports-focused comparison, subject to regional rights and fees.
- Philo — entertainment-oriented and generally unsuitable when major sports or broadcast networks are essential.
There is no universal winner: the right replacement depends on your ZIP code and the channels or teams you actually watch.
Bottom line
In February 2024, AT&T TV NOW was a historical brand, not a service you could newly purchase. The practical successor was DIRECTV STREAM or another DIRECTV internet-TV offering. Its strengths were channel breadth, regional-sports potential, cloud DVR and satellite-free delivery; its drawbacks were a relatively high base price, possible fees, market-dependent locals and sports, changing device support and confusing legacy account terms. Subscribe only after confirming the exact product, ZIP-code lineup and fee-inclusive monthly cost.
