Can You Add External Plugins to the Free Version of BandLab?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No. BandLab Studio does not let you install or load external VST, VST3, AU, or CLAP plugins directly, whether you use a free account or BandLab Membership. You can use BandLab’s built-in effects and instruments, or process audio in another DAW and import the rendered result.

The short answer

The answer is the same on BandLab Studio in a desktop browser, iOS, and Android: there is no supported plugin scanner, plugin-folder selector, or external-plugin insert slot. BandLab’s documented Studio workflow covers its own effects and virtual instruments, BandLab Sounds, and imported audio or MIDI—not separately installed software such as Serum, Kontakt, Auto-Tune, FabFilter, Valhalla, Waves, Melodyne, or iZotope plugins.

BandLab describes Studio as a free, cloud-based DAW used through a browser or phone. Its current project limits are up to 15 minutes and 16 audio or MIDI tracks; an internet connection is required. See the BandLab Studio guide and supported platforms and system requirements.

Why an installed plugin does not appear

A VST, VST3, Audio Unit (AU), CLAP module, or another proprietary format is software that must be loaded by a compatible host. Traditional desktop DAWs install that host and scan local plugin locations. BandLab Studio does not provide that workflow. Installing a plugin on your computer, or installing a mobile AUv3 app, does not create a plugin slot in BandLab.

Browser extensions are not a substitute. BandLab does not offer a supported way to route a Studio track through a separately installed plugin from Chrome, another browser, or the mobile app. This is a product and architecture distinction, not a missing setting you can fix by reinstalling the plugin.

Does BandLab Membership add VST or AU support?

No—not inside BandLab Studio. Membership adds BandLab-native features such as additional effects and presets, AutoPitch options, AI tools, mastering features, artist services, and expanded BandLab Sounds or Beats allowances. The Membership FAQ does not list third-party plugin hosting as a Studio feature.

Membership can be relevant if you want access to separate Cakewalk products, but paying for it will not make a VST menu or plugin scanner appear in the browser or mobile Studio app.

Select a track, open Effects at the lower left (or the FX icon in the track header), choose Add Effect, then select an effect from BandLab’s library. The procedure is documented in Adding Effects.

Custom FX presets

You can combine effects from BandLab’s own library, adjust them, and save the chain under My Presets. Follow Creating Custom FX Presets. A custom preset stores BandLab effects; it cannot contain a third-party plugin.

Virtual instruments and Sounds

BandLab provides its own virtual instruments, loops, and samples. Its virtual-instrument documentation currently lists more than 370 free professionally designed instruments. Membership instruments may be available to add while some controls require membership. These are BandLab instruments, not a way to load a separate synthesizer or sampler. See Using BandLab Virtual Instruments.

Imported files

Studio can import audio and MIDI. Supported web formats listed by BandLab include MIDI, MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A, AAC, and OGG. Importing a file is different from importing the plugin that created it.

How to use an external plugin with BandLab anyway

The practical workaround is to render the plugin’s output in a compatible desktop DAW, then bring the resulting file into BandLab. This works for instruments, vocal tuning and effects, guitar amp simulators, mixing processors, and mastering chains.

  1. Open the instrument or effect in a plugin-compatible DAW.
  2. Create or record the MIDI part, or process the audio track there.
  3. Render or export the result, preferably as a WAV at the project’s intended sample rate and bit depth.
  4. Keep an unprocessed safety export and the original external-DAW project and presets.
  5. In BandLab, create a new project or open the destination project.
  6. Choose Import Audio/MIDI when adding a track, or drag the file into Studio.
  7. Align the imported region, then mute or remove the original track if the rendered file replaces it.

BandLab documents this process in Importing Audio and MIDI Files. Imported audio can include a few seconds of initial silence; use the faint vertical dotted-line indicator to move the region back to its original start point.

Exporting BandLab audio for external processing

You can reverse the process when BandLab is where you started:

  1. Export an individual track, stems, or a mixdown from BandLab.
  2. Open the exported audio in a desktop DAW that supports your plugin format.
  3. Insert the external plugin and process the file.
  4. Export the processed track or mix.
  5. Import that file back into BandLab.

BandLab documents individual-track WAV export on the web and mixdown formats such as WAV and M4A; exact choices can vary by platform and current Studio interface. Check Supported Import and Export File Formats. Export stems instead of only a stereo mix if you expect to continue editing or mixing.

What happens to MIDI and plugin settings?

MIDI does not carry the external instrument

MIDI stores notes and performance data, not the sound of Serum, Kontakt, Vital, or another synthesizer. If you import MIDI into BandLab, assign it to a BandLab instrument or render the original instrument to audio first. Otherwise the original timbre will not come with the file.

Rendered audio is printed

When you import a WAV containing Auto-Tune, reverb, distortion, or another external process, that processing is printed into the audio. BandLab cannot reopen the external plugin, change its settings, or recover its plugin automation. Revisions require returning to the external DAW and exporting again.

Project transfer is limited

Audio files, MIDI, stems, and a mixdown can move between programs. A third-party installation, authorization, presets, plugin automation, routing, and an editable external-plugin chain do not transfer automatically. Keep clearly named files such as Lead_Vocal_AutoTune_Render.wav and Bass_Serum_Render.wav alongside the source project.

Do Cakewalk Sonar and Cakewalk Next support plugins?

Yes, but they are separate desktop DAWs, not upgraded versions of the BandLab Studio browser or mobile app. BandLab’s announcement describes third-party VST support in Cakewalk Sonar and Cakewalk Next. Sonar is positioned as a Windows desktop DAW; Next is another separate BandLab-associated application. Their installation, interfaces, project handling, operating-system requirements, and plan eligibility are product-specific and can change.

Which option fits your workflow?

Need Best choice
Free browser or mobile creation BandLab Studio
Built-in effects, instruments, collaboration, and cloud access BandLab Studio
Direct VST or VST3 hosting Cakewalk Sonar, Cakewalk Next, or another compatible desktop DAW
BandLab collaboration plus external processing Render in another DAW, then import the audio
Editable external-plugin chains, automation, advanced routing, or CPU-heavy libraries A plugin-compatible desktop DAW

Choose BandLab Studio when convenience and collaboration matter more than plugin flexibility. Choose a desktop host when you need live plugin editing, sidechains, buses, automation, or instruments such as large sampler libraries. If you stay with BandLab, use stems, retain unprocessed safety exports, and keep the external project for future changes.

Common problems and their explanations

  • “I installed the VST, but BandLab cannot find it.” This is expected: Studio has no documented plugin scan or directory-selection workflow.
  • “I paid for Membership, but the plugin still does not appear.” Membership unlocks BandLab features and may provide access to separate products; it does not add external-plugin hosting to Studio.
  • “My imported MIDI sounds different.” MIDI contains performance data, not the original synthesizer. Render the instrument or assign a BandLab instrument.
  • “I cannot edit the plugin settings on my imported WAV.” The settings were printed during rendering. Reprocess the source in the external DAW.
  • “The imported file starts late.” Remove the leading silence or move the region to the dotted-line start marker described in BandLab’s import instructions.
  • “A tutorial shows a plugin menu.” Check whether it is demonstrating Cakewalk Sonar, Cakewalk Next, Cakewalk by BandLab, another DAW, or an outdated/unofficial workflow.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: You cannot add external plugins directly to free BandLab—or to BandLab Studio through Membership. Use BandLab’s internal tools, or move rendered audio and MIDI between BandLab and a separate plugin-capable desktop DAW.
