Short answer: No official, current Sam and Colby gear list publicly confirms every camera, lens, microphone or night-vision system they use. Fan identifications point to several Canon and Sony possibilities, but the channel’s recognizable result comes from a mobile, low-light production workflow: handheld coverage, strategically placed cameras, clear dialogue, practical lighting, paranormal devices, atmospheric inserts and careful editing.
What cameras do Sam and Colby actually use?
Publicly available evidence does not establish one current Sam and Colby camera model. In a 2024 Forbes interview, Colby described the appeal of a direct, “two guys and a camera” format rather than a conventional television-sized crew. That describes the presentation philosophy, not a complete inventory.
Older fan discussions associate earlier exploration videos with Canon DSLR bodies such as the EOS 80D or 90D. Other viewers identify newer-looking footage with Sony mirrorless cameras, especially the low-light-oriented Alpha 7S III. A separate production discussion suggests Canon XA40/XA50-style camcorders and Sony night-vision camcorders. These are community identifications, not first-party confirmations: Canon DSLR and Sony speculation and camcorder and infrared speculation.
Model identification from a compressed YouTube frame is especially unreliable. Similar bodies can share the same shape, lenses can hide markings, and footage may combine cameras from different production periods. Articles that state the EOS 80D is definitively their primary camera generally do not provide a first-party source or verifiable episode evidence; one example is this unsupported gear claim.

What can reasonably be inferred
- They use cameras that can move through buildings with the presenters.
- Some productions use additional viewpoints, including fixed or security-style cameras.
- Night work may involve either sensitive color cameras or infrared-capable equipment.
- The setup has changed across their earlier abandoned-location videos and later, larger productions.
The real secret is the shooting style
The visual identity is a system, not a magic camera body. Handheld movement keeps the viewer alongside the investigators, while wide establishing views explain the architecture before tighter reaction shots make an event personal. Cameras follow corridors, stairs and rooms, then cut to doors, objects, old photographs and empty spaces.
Research on paranormal YouTube identifies recurring atmospheric B-roll, narration, equipment close-ups, thumbnails and reaction-driven structure as central to Sam and Colby’s format. Those conventions are documented in an academic analysis published by Taylor & Francis: Paranormal YouTube and Sam and Colby’s visual style.
A two-person investigation also imposes practical limits. Every extra camera needs batteries, storage, setup time, security and someone to check it. A mobile operator-held camera therefore does most of the storytelling, while static or guest-operated cameras add coverage when the location allows.
How they film in near darkness
Low-light color footage
A sensitive camera and a fast lens can preserve color from available light, but the exact aperture, ISO, frame rate, codec and picture profile used by Sam and Colby have not been publicly established. Operators may use manual or semi-manual exposure, lock focus after measuring a distance, and keep practical sources such as flashlights, lamps or small LEDs in the scene.

The look often favors controlled darkness instead of lighting an entire room. That preserves contrast and leaves viewers looking toward the same pools of light as the presenters. Over-brightening a severely underexposed file only magnifies noise; better options are a faster lens, a more sensitive camera, an appropriate frame rate or modest added light.
Infrared night vision is not thermal imaging
Low-light color: records available visible light and retains color.
Infrared night vision: uses a camera’s infrared sensitivity, usually with an IR illuminator, and commonly produces monochrome or green-tinted images.
Thermal imaging: maps differences in heat radiation. It does not simply mean green night-vision footage.

Digital enhancement: raises brightness, contrast or sharpness after capture; it cannot create reliable evidence that was never recorded. Fan discussions regularly conflate these categories, so a green sequence should not be called thermal unless the video identifies it that way: viewer discussion of night-vision terminology.
Do they use multiple cameras?
Different episodes can combine several kinds of coverage:
- Operator-held cameras follow the main investigation and capture reactions.
- Secondary static cameras watch a room, experiment or hallway while the presenters move elsewhere.
- Security-camera systems can monitor a location for long periods.
- Guest or crew cameras provide alternate angles.
- Infrared cameras operate when visible light is deliberately reduced.
A Morbid podcast transcript describes a 24/7 camera system at a haunted attraction and reviewing activity when nobody is present. That establishes a location-specific system, not a claim that every Sam and Colby episode uses continuous multi-camera surveillance.
How the audio creates tension
No public source confirms a particular microphone inventory. A mobile production would commonly divide audio among these categories:

- Portable recorders: isolated room tone or EVP experiments.
- Ambient or contact microphones: possible tools for knocks, vibration and footsteps, but not publicly attributed to the channel as a standard system.
- Camera scratch audio: synchronization and backup rather than necessarily the final mix.
Fans have mentioned RØDE-style boom microphones, DJI wireless systems and small on-camera lights, but those reports remain unverified: community equipment discussion.
Post-production often matters more than the brand. Room tone, silence, reverb, low-frequency emphasis, impacts and music determine how threatening a pause or distant sound feels. A clear recording is not automatically paranormal: gain settings, compression, wind, radio interference, building acoustics, footsteps, crew movement and editing can all change what the audience hears.

Sam and Colby have described equipment as a way to make a subjective experience visible to an audience—for example, showing a light activate or a sensor respond when someone reports feeling something. An activation is an observable event produced by a device. The paranormal interpretation is a separate claim that requires additional evidence.

What happens before and after the investigation?
Behind-the-scenes material describes planning meetings, equipment calibration and preparation before filming: production preparation summary. A practical workflow includes checking batteries and media, testing microphones, establishing focus, noting existing electrical sources and deciding where static cameras can safely remain.
After filming, an episode is selected, shortened, rearranged, color-graded, mixed and narrated. B-roll of architecture, objects and empty rooms supplies context and breathing space. Returning to a device or camera angle when something changes gives the audience a visual cause-and-effect line, while delaying the strongest reaction creates a documentary-style narrative arc.
Can viewers recreate the Sam and Colby look?
Mobile starter setup
- One modern smartphone or camera with a wide or standard view.
- Small LED light, compact tripod or monopod, headphones and spare power.
- On-camera microphone or one wireless microphone.
This is inexpensive and quick, but darkness produces more noise, dialogue has less redundancy and long investigations demand careful battery and storage planning.
Portable two-person setup
- Low-light mirrorless camera or camcorder with a fast wide lens.
- Wireless microphones plus a directional backup.
- Two static cameras, a portable recorder and an approved infrared system if required.
- Small LED panels, IR illuminator, power banks, spare media and a two-copy backup plan.
This improves coverage and dialogue but adds weight, setup time, charging, monitoring and coordination. A mirrorless option such as Sony’s Alpha line is listed at Sony’s official store; camcorder alternatives are described at Canon’s X-series page. Neither page establishes what Sam and Colby use.

These are workflow options, not claims about the channel’s inventory.
How to evaluate a mysterious moment on camera
- Check whether the camera was moving or changing exposure.
- Look for reflections, a practical light source, insects, dust or lens flare.
- Determine whether autofocus, rolling shutter or compression created the effect.
- Ask whether synchronized audio exists on another recorder.
- Check whether all relevant angles, setup and crew positions are shown.
- Confirm that a device was tested and calibrated before the event.
- Consider building settling, vibration, radio bleed and ordinary crew activity.
- Prefer the explanation that requires fewer unsupported assumptions.
The recording can be genuine while the cause remains uncertain. A dramatic edit does not by itself prove fabrication, and a compelling reaction does not establish a supernatural explanation. Community debates about events occurring when cameras are lowered or turned off are viewer objections, not established findings; examples include this discussion and this later debate.
The Bottom Line
There is no verified “secret Sam and Colby camera.” Their distinctive footage is the product of a compact, mobile low-light workflow that combines operator-held cameras, optional static coverage, deliberate sound recording, investigation devices, atmospheric B-roll, reactions and editing. Recreating that system is more realistic—and more useful—than chasing an unconfirmed model number.
