Yes—Apple TV+ (now branded Apple TV on Apple’s current U.S. pages) can be shared through Family Sharing. One organizer can include up to five other people, for six members total. Everyone signs in with a separate Apple Account, so recommendations and viewing preferences remain personal. Access normally appears automatically after a member joins the family group and opens the Apple TV app. Rentals, purchases, Apple TV channels, and third-party services in the app are separate.
The short version
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many people? | One organizer plus up to five additional members—six people total. |
| Do members share a password? | No. Each person uses their own Apple Account. |
| Who manages the group? | The Family Sharing organizer, or another adult managing the eligible subscription. |
| Is Apple hardware required? | No. Supported smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web can work, depending on region and device. |
| What is not automatically included? | Third-party services, rentals, purchases, and every Apple TV channel. |
Apple’s current terminology can be confusing: Apple TV is the streaming subscription, the Apple TV app is the player and storefront, Apple TV 4K is hardware, and Apple TV channels are separately billed services. “Apple TV+” remains the familiar search term, so this article uses both names.
Family Sharing is Apple’s account-and-subscription system, not an informal shared-login arrangement. Apple describes it for a family group; a person can belong to only one Family Sharing group at a time. Apple’s Family Sharing overview explains the group and account model.
How Apple TV+ Family Sharing works
The organizer creates or manages a Family Sharing group, then invites members’ Apple Accounts. The eligible Apple TV subscription is attached to that group. Members do not create separate Apple TV logins or enter the organizer’s credentials. After accepting an invitation, a member generally opens the Apple TV app while signed in to the Apple Account that joined the group.

Apple says shared subscriptions become available when a family member first opens Apple TV after the subscription begins. The exact availability of services and content depends on country or region. Apple’s iPhone guide describes this behavior.
How many people can use it?
The Family Sharing limit is six people total: the organizer and up to five additional members. That is a membership limit, not proof of six simultaneous video streams. Apple’s cited Family Sharing documentation establishes the number of eligible members but does not state a current concurrent-stream allowance.
What each person needs
- A separate Apple Account.
- Membership in the organizer’s Family Sharing group.
- A supported device or browser with the correct Apple Account signed in.
- Access to the service in that person’s country or region.
Apple lists supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, smart-TV, streaming-device, game-console, and web platforms; features vary by device and region. See Apple’s platform availability page and the iPhone subscription guide.
Set up Family Sharing
If Family Sharing is not active
- On a current iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap Family (older software may say Family Sharing).
- Tap Set Up Your Family.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Invite the people who should join and have them accept.
Apple’s labels vary by operating-system version and region. Family Sharing is created in device settings or Apple Account controls—not inside the Apple TV app. Apple documents that limitation in its TV app guide.
If Family Sharing already exists
- Confirm each intended viewer accepted the invitation.
- Confirm each person is signed in with the Apple Account that joined the group.
- Open the Apple TV app on each device.
- If access is missing, inspect subscription sharing and eligibility.
Check that the subscription is shared
On current iPhone or iPad software, try Settings > Family > Subscriptions > Manage Subscriptions, select the subscription, and check its sharing option. Another path used by Apple is Settings > [your Apple Account name] > Subscriptions, then check Share with Family. Menu paths differ by software version and region.

If no sharing control appears, the plan may be an individual or student plan, billed by a third party, ineligible for Family Sharing, attached to another Apple Account, or unavailable in that region. Apple’s subscription-management guidance is at support.apple.com/en-mide/108107.
What family members can see
Each member keeps separate recommendations, preferences, and account credentials. Giving someone access to the subscription does not give them the organizer’s Apple Account password. Apple explicitly presents Family Sharing as a way to share services without sharing accounts; never distribute the organizer’s password. See Apple’s personal-safety guide.
This is not complete isolation. Family Sharing can also connect members through purchase sharing, iCloud+, locations, Screen Time, parental controls, and other family features. Those settings are separate from Apple TV’s personalized viewing experience.
Who pays?
Subscription sharing and Purchase Sharing are different controls.
Purchase Sharing on
Apple says the organizer’s default payment method can be used for family purchases and shared subscriptions when Purchase Sharing is enabled. Review this carefully if children or other members can buy apps, music, films, books, or rentals.

Purchase Sharing off
Eligible subscriptions can still be shared, while individual purchases use each member’s own payment method. Turning off Purchase Sharing therefore does not automatically stop Apple TV subscription sharing. Apple explains the distinction at its subscription-sharing support page.
What if someone already has an individual subscription?
If a person joins a family group that already has the relevant Apple TV subscription, Apple says the individual subscription is not renewed at the next billing date; the member uses the group subscription instead. If the group has no subscription and the joining member has one, the group can use that member’s subscription.
Check the existing subscription’s renewal date and cancellation status. Apple’s cited guidance does not promise an immediate refund for every overlapping-subscription situation, so do not assume one.
What is included—and what is not?
| Content or service | Family Sharing treatment |
|---|---|
| Apple TV subscription catalog | Shared with eligible family members. |
| Apple TV channels | Channel-by-channel; do not assume every channel is included. |
| Rentals and Store purchases | Separate purchase-sharing rules apply. |
| Third-party services inside the Apple TV app | Usually require their own subscriptions. |
| Apple One | The Apple TV component follows the sharing rules of the selected plan. |
Apple’s U.S. offer page says the Apple TV subscription does not include third-party subscription services or content available only for rental or purchase: tv.apple.com/us/offer/tvs.sbd.4000. A title appearing in the Apple TV app can therefore show a rental, purchase, channel, or regional-availability prompt rather than included playback.
Apple’s broader content guide notes that availability varies by country or region: support.apple.com/en-us/111114.

Purchases are a separate system
When Purchase Sharing is enabled, eligible apps, music, films, television shows, and books bought by family members may be available to others. Some purchases cannot be shared, and hidden purchases are not visible to the group. Leaving the family can remove access to another member’s shared purchases even if a previously downloaded item remains on a device for a time. Subscription access and purchase access should be treated as separate decisions.
Children and parental controls
Children can use their own Apple Accounts in a Family Sharing group. Parents or guardians can use Screen Time, content restrictions, and Ask to Buy for qualifying purchases and downloads. Age rules differ by country or region. Ask to Buy is primarily a purchase-approval feature, not a universal filter for every Apple TV title.
Apple TV alone or Apple One?
The following are U.S. prices displayed by Apple on August 18, 2026; prices, trials, and features can change and are not global rates.
| Option | U.S. price shown | Family Sharing angle | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV standalone | $12.99/month after a seven-day trial | Share through Family Sharing | Households mainly wanting Apple’s streaming catalog. |
| Apple One Individual | $19.95/month | Apple says Apple TV and Apple Arcade include Family Sharing even on Individual | One person who also wants other included services. |
| Apple One Family | $27.95/month | Invite up to five additional people | Households using several Apple services. |
| Apple One Premier | $39.95/month | Broader premium bundle | Households that will use its premium services and storage. |
See Apple’s current pricing at apple.com/apple-one. Apple One is poor value when the household wants only Apple TV and will not use the other services. It becomes more compelling when Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, or Apple News+ would otherwise be purchased separately.
Troubleshooting access and billing
“My family member joined, but Apple TV asks them to subscribe”
- Confirm the invitation was accepted.
- Check that the viewer is signed in with the Apple Account that joined the group.
- Open Settings > Family > Subscriptions and verify the subscription and sharing setting.
- Check whether the plan is eligible and billed by Apple rather than a third party.
- Close and reopen the Apple TV app.
- Check country or region eligibility.
- Allow time for changes to propagate; Apple says some changes can take up to 30 minutes.
“Share with Family” is missing
Check for an individual or student plan, third-party billing, regional limits, an ineligible service, or the wrong Apple Account.

Two people are being billed
Look for separate subscriptions under different Apple Accounts and compare renewal dates. If the member joined after an individual subscription’s billing date, Apple’s next-billing-date rule does not establish an immediate refund.
A viewer sees a purchase prompt
The title may be a rental, Store purchase, third-party channel, region-restricted item, or service outside the family subscription. The Apple TV app combines subscription playback with a storefront, so its presence there does not prove inclusion.
Someone wants to change family groups
A person can belong to only one Family Sharing group at a time. Before switching, review effects on shared purchases, iCloud+, Apple TV access, and other family services.
What happens when someone leaves?
Sharing ends when a member leaves or is removed, when the organizer stops Family Sharing, or when the subscription is canceled. The former member can start an individual Apple TV subscription with their own Apple Account and should check whether any prior individual subscription remains active. Downloads, purchases, and other shared services have separate rules; Apple’s cited documentation does not establish that viewing history or recommendations are always deleted.

Bottom line: For one household, Apple TV+ Family Sharing is straightforward: one subscription, up to six family-group members, and a separate Apple Account for each viewer. The important checks are the correct account, subscription-sharing eligibility, Purchase Sharing settings, existing renewal dates, and whether the title is actually included rather than a rental, purchase, channel, or third-party service.
