Yes—but usually not new. In the United States, a 2026 buyer looking for a mainstream 3D OLED, QLED, or LCD television will generally find discontinued sets, old dealer stock, refurbished units, or imports rather than a current model from a major brand. The practical choices are a tested used 3D TV, a projector that explicitly supports 3D, a VR headset, or a modern 2D television if 3D is not essential.
What counts as a 3D television?
A genuine 3D television displays separate images to your left and right eyes. It is not simply a TV playing a 3D video file, showing a split-screen image, or applying a software “3D effect.”

- Active-shutter 3D: battery-powered glasses alternately block each eye in synchronization with the display.
- Passive polarized 3D: the panel sends differently polarized images to each eye through lightweight, battery-free glasses.
Red/cyan anaglyph glasses are not equivalent to either system. A normal 2D television cannot ordinarily be upgraded with software, glasses, or a 3D Blu-ray player. Panasonic explains that a conventional TV cannot generate the required two-eye image from a 3D source (Panasonic 3D FAQ). Sony likewise says 3D capability cannot be added to a non-3D television and advises checking the model manual to identify the active or passive system (Sony 3D glasses and TV compatibility).
Are new 3D TVs still sold?
United States
For ordinary consumer shopping, effectively no. LG’s U.S. 3D-TV page remains online as legacy information, but it returns zero current products and identifies the relevant sets as discontinued (LG 3D TVs). LG’s AG-F310 Cinema 3D glasses are also marked discontinued (LG AG-F310), and LG’s general glasses page currently shows no results (LG 3D glasses).

Sony’s current support pages document compatibility for older 3D televisions and projectors rather than offering a current 3D-TV range (Sony 3D support). That is why a manufacturer page or marketplace listing should not be mistaken for ongoing production.
Outside the U.S.
Specialized commercial, medical, automotive, signage, and limited regional products may still use 3D technologies. An imported display is not automatically a practical living-room replacement. Verify U.S. voltage and tuner standards, HDMI and copy-protection support, Blu-ray 3D compatibility, glasses and transmitter availability, warranty coverage, and parts support. The defensible conclusion is that mainstream new U.S. consumer 3D TVs are effectively absent—not that every 3D display has disappeared worldwide.
Why did 3D TVs disappear?
No single cause explains the retreat. Home 3D required glasses, and viewers commonly encountered dimmer pictures, flicker, crosstalk, eye fatigue, or viewing-angle limitations. Broadcasters and streaming services offered limited and inconsistent 3D programming, while studios and retailers reduced their emphasis on home 3D. Manufacturers found that 4K resolution, HDR, OLED and mini-LED contrast, larger screens, and better upscaling were easier to market without requiring special eyewear. The combination of convenience, content, cost, and adoption problems made 3D a poor mainstream differentiator.
Where can you obtain a 3D display now?
Used or refurbished television
A discontinued LG Cinema 3D, Sony Bravia 3D, Samsung 3D LED/LCD or plasma, Panasonic Viera 3D, or older Philips set is the closest substitute for the former retail experience. Model names and specifications vary by country and screen size, so identify the complete model number rather than relying on a series name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse local pickup when possible. Large old panels are fragile and expensive to ship, and a low sticker price can be overwhelmed by transport, missing glasses, or a failed panel. Refurbished and old dealer inventory may offer return protection, but confirm what “refurbished” actually includes.
3D-capable projector
A projector can be a more current route to a large shared 3D image. Epson’s U.S. home-projector catalog is a starting point, but “home theater” does not guarantee Blu-ray 3D support; the exact model specification must say so (Epson home projectors).
- Advantages: very large image, dedicated-theater suitability, and hardware that may be newer than a discontinued TV.
- Trade-offs: screen and mounting requirements, throw distance, room light, fan noise, black levels, HDR performance, and lamp or laser maintenance.
- Additional equipment may include compatible active glasses, an HDMI cable, a screen, and room-darkening measures.
VR headset
A VR headset can show stereoscopic video on a private virtual screen. It avoids the hunt for a discontinued panel and can create a very large apparent image, but it is normally a one-person experience. Blu-ray 3D playback may require a compatible computer, conversion workflow, or specialized application. Comfort, lens clarity, field of view, battery life, and motion tolerance vary. Treat VR as an alternative viewing method, not a drop-in replacement for a shared television.
Modern 2D television
For most buyers, a current 4K OLED, mini-LED, or QLED is the better everyday purchase. It offers current HDR, brightness, contrast, smart-TV software, warranty support, and easier replacement. The unavoidable compromise is that it will not provide conventional Blu-ray 3D merely because it is a newer or higher-resolution TV.

Used 3D-TV inspection checklist
- Record the exact model number and locate its original manual or support page.
- Confirm whether it uses active or passive 3D and which formats it accepts: frame-packing, side-by-side, top-and-bottom, or a combination.
- Identify the required glasses model, charging or battery arrangement, and any infrared emitter, Bluetooth transmitter, or dongle.
- Ask the seller to demonstrate a known 3D Blu-ray or test file. Check that the TV detects the signal and that both eyes produce a stable image.
- Test every pair of glasses, synchronization, charging, and batteries. Sony does not recommend or support third-party glasses for its 3D televisions and projectors (Sony glasses guidance).
- Inspect the panel with solid-color images for dead pixels, burn-in or image retention, vertical banding, clouding, uneven color, and excessive brightness loss.
- Test every HDMI input, optical or eARC audio output, remote control, and physical button.
- Check replacement-glasses and remote availability before paying.
- Prefer an in-person test or a seller offering a meaningful return period. Include transport and shipping damage in the budget.
Active versus passive 3D
| System | Strengths | Risks and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Passive polarized | Lightweight glasses, no batteries, often comfortable for groups | Some implementations reduce vertical resolution; seating height and position can affect the image |
| Active shutter | Can preserve full panel resolution per eye in supported modes; common on many high-end older sets | Charging or batteries, possible flicker, dimming and crosstalk, synchronization issues, and proprietary accessories |
Neither system is universally superior. The exact panel, viewer sensitivity, seating position, content, and accessory supply determine the better choice.
What equipment is required?
The traditional chain is:
3D Blu-ray player → HDMI cable → 3D TV or projector → compatible glasses
Philips lists the same basic requirements: a 3D-capable Blu-ray player, 3D-capable TV, glasses, and 3D content (Philips: watching 3D movies). A player can read a 3D disc, but a normal 2D TV cannot create the two-eye image.
Choosing a Blu-ray player
Do not assume that a current 4K Ultra HD player supports Blu-ray 3D. Panasonic’s U.S. store displayed the DP-UB820-K at $549.99 during the August 18, 2026 product check, but its current page emphasizes 4K and HDR; verify Blu-ray 3D in the exact manual before buying (DP-UB820-K; Panasonic Blu-ray collection). An older dedicated 3D player may be a better match for a legacy setup.
Check 3D disc recognition, HDMI output, region coding, firmware requirements, frame-sequential output, and whether an old receiver or soundbar passes the signal.
Troubleshooting a doubled or flat picture
- Set the display to automatic 3D detection or the correct manual format.
- Confirm that the player is outputting 3D and that the disc contains a 3D version.
- Connect the player directly to the display to bypass an old receiver or soundbar.
- Recharge active glasses or replace their batteries, then pair or synchronize them.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and another input.
Menu labels differ by manufacturer and model, so use the individual manual rather than a generic menu path.
What content remains?
3D Blu-ray discs are the most predictable source. Older broadcast recordings, personal 3D photographs and video, and side-by-side or top-and-bottom files can also work with suitable hardware. Streaming support varies by service, region, title, account, and device; many old smart TVs have lost app support even when their 3D panel still functions. Panasonic documentation describes compatible 3D Blu-ray sources and illustrates why model-specific checks remain important (Panasonic 3D manual).
Best path for each buyer
| Priority | Most suitable direction | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest way to watch a 3D Blu-ray collection | Tested used 3D TV with model-matched glasses | Age, failure risk, obsolete apps, and accessory scarcity |
| Dedicated movie room and a very large image | Projector with explicit Blu-ray 3D support | Room, screen, brightness, placement, and maintenance requirements |
| Private or occasional 3D viewing | VR headset | One viewer and a more complicated playback workflow |
| Family or group viewing | Good-condition passive 3D TV, if available | Older panel and possible resolution reduction |
| Highest potential resolution from an older 3D set | Active-shutter TV | Flicker, batteries, charging, and proprietary glasses |
| Reliable everyday television | Modern 2D OLED, mini-LED, or QLED | No conventional 3D playback |
Final verdict
Buy a used 3D television only when stereoscopic Blu-ray playback is the central purpose, you can verify the exact model and glasses, and you can test the complete signal chain. Choose a verified 3D projector if you want a dedicated large-screen theater, or a VR headset for solo viewing. For nearly everyone else, a modern 2D TV is the more reliable purchase; current picture quality, HDR, software, warranty, and parts support outweigh the convenience of reviving an aging 3D ecosystem.
