For a first viewing, watch the completed DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in release order, from Man of Steel (2013) through Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), with Peacemaker season 1 after The Suicide Squad. The successor DC Universe (DCU) starts separately with Creature Commandos, then Superman (2025) and Peacemaker season 2.
What “DCEU” means
DCEU is the widely used name for the interconnected film-and-television universe launched by Man of Steel. It is not a label for every adaptation of a DC Comics character. DC Studios now uses DCU for its newer shared continuity, while older productions remain separate continuities or stand-alone stories. See DC’s transition announcement at DC.com and the background summary at Wikipedia.

Best first-time order: DCEU release order
Release order preserves character introductions, post-credit scenes and crossover reveals. It is also safer than forcing a perfectly neat chronology onto a universe that changes its timeline several times.
- Man of Steel (2013) — Film; launches the shared-world Superman story.
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) — Film; the Ultimate Edition is the fuller cut.
- Suicide Squad (2016) — Film.
- Wonder Woman (2017) — Film; Diana’s origin, mainly set in 1918.
- Justice League (2017) — Film; first major team-up.
- Aquaman (2018) — Film.
- Shazam! (2019) — Film.
- Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020) — Film.
- Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) — Film; set primarily in 1984.
- The Suicide Squad (2021) — Film.
- Peacemaker, season 1 (2022) — Series; direct spin-off from The Suicide Squad.
- Black Adam (2022) — Film.
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) — Film.
- The Flash (2023) — Film; introduces major timeline and multiverse complications.
- Blue Beetle (2023) — Film; largely self-contained.
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) — Film; the final DCEU theatrical release.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is an alternate, expanded cut of Justice League, not a second story chapter. Substitute it for the 2017 film, watch it afterward as a comparison, or skip it; both are not required for continuity.

Practical chronological DCEU order
This is an approximate story order rather than a single official timeline. The broad framework follows Rotten Tomatoes’ DCEU guide.
- Wonder Woman — main story in 1918.
- Wonder Woman 1984 — primarily 1984.
- Man of Steel.
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
- Suicide Squad.
- Justice League or Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
- Aquaman.
- Shazam!.
- Birds of Prey.
- The Suicide Squad.
- Peacemaker, season 1.
- Black Adam.
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
- The Flash.
- Blue Beetle.
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The Flash makes everything after it less precise: alternate timelines and universes exist, but the film does not simply erase every earlier event. Blue Beetle was made to work with limited continuity dependence, so its exact placement matters less than its release position.

The shortest useful DCEU route
For viewers who want the main arc without all 16 entries:
- Man of Steel
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
- Wonder Woman
- Justice League or Zack Snyder’s Justice League
- Aquaman
- Shazam!
- The Suicide Squad
- Peacemaker, season 1
- The Flash
Add Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom for the complete experience.
Rank #3
- Blu-ray Collection
- Digital Copy
- Bonus Features
Where Peacemaker fits
Season 1 follows The Suicide Squad and was produced as part of the DCEU. Season 2 belongs to the new DCU and uses a soft transition: some season-one elements remain usable while others are revised or reframed. The clean viewing sequence is:
- The Suicide Squad
- Peacemaker, season 1
- Creature Commandos
- Superman
- Peacemaker, season 2
DC’s official listing is at DC.com/TV.
The current DCU starter order
The DCU is a new shared continuity overseen by DC Studios, not a simple renaming of every previous project. As of August 16, 2026, the released starting sequence is:
Rank #4
- Creature Commandos, season 1 — the first released DCU project.
- Superman (2025) — the first DCU film.
- Peacemaker, season 2 — the major on-screen bridge from the earlier continuity.
Check the current DC television catalog and DC movie catalog before adding later releases, because announced, delayed and available projects are not the same thing. DC describes this universe as a focused shared setting within a larger multiverse rather than a rigid single timeline.

These are important DC works, but they should be watched as separate continuities or stand-alone stories:
Best Value
- Joker and Joker: Folie à Deux
- The Batman and The Penguin
- Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy
- Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns, plus Batman Forever and Batman & Robin
- Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and Superman Returns
- Watchmen, Constantine and V for Vendetta
Do not append the entire animated catalog to the live-action order. DC animation contains multiple continuities and stand-alone adaptations; its own Superman animation guide explains why related-looking films may not share a timeline.
Choose an order by your goal
| Viewer | Best choice |
|---|---|
| First-time viewer | DCEU release order |
| Rewatcher who prefers story time | Approximate chronological order |
| Short on time | Essential nine-entry route |
| Interested in James Gunn’s continuity | Creature Commandos, Superman, then Peacemaker season 2 |
| Wants every major DC adaptation | Use separate continuity guides rather than one mega-timeline |
Streaming and ownership notes
Availability changes by country and date. In the United States, HBO Max is the most natural subscription home for DC and HBO programming; its official help pages list plans and supported devices at help.hbomax.com. Prices observed in August 2026 were $10.99/month or $109.99/year for Basic with Ads, $18.49/month or $184.99/year for Standard, and $22.99/month or $229.99/year for Premium, excluding taxes and subject to change.

HBO Max can also be added through Prime Video Channels at Amazon Channels. Physical 4K, Blu-ray and DVD editions remain the most stable option when streaming rights rotate.
