Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen appeared to watch his injured team’s October 2024 game against Atlanta through a pirate stream. A screenshot from his Instagram Story circulated online, and the interface appeared to show MethStreams. When commentators pointed to his NFL income, Woolen reportedly replied: “It’s free it’s for me,” with laughing emojis.
The joke landed because the episode captured a real consumer frustration. Woolen could afford legitimate viewing, but no single standard U.S. subscription guarantees every NFL game in every location, on every device. Legal access is fragmented by market, broadcast window and platform.
What happened to Tariq Woolen?
Ars Technica reported on October 23, 2024, that Woolen was injured and watching his Seahawks teammates rather than playing. An image shared from his Instagram Story appeared to show a Seahawks broadcast on a site branded “MethStreams.” The image is the evidence for the account; it does not independently prove who opened the page, selected the stream or operated the service. Ars Technica’s report described the stream as an apparent pirate broadcast.
Social-media commentary emphasized Woolen’s professional salary. His reported response—“It’s free it’s for me”—turned the criticism into a punchline. The reaction described in the coverage was largely amused or sympathetic, not a quantified public endorsement of piracy. Fans recognized the familiar irritation of hunting for the right channel or app, even when the viewer is a wealthy athlete.

Why legal NFL viewing is fragmented
The obstacle is distribution design, not an absence of legal services. The NFL assigns different game windows to different broadcasters, and availability changes with the viewer’s location.
Local Sunday-afternoon games
Games shown in a viewer’s local market generally arrive through the local CBS or FOX affiliate. Depending on the market and plan, viewers may use an antenna, a pay-TV provider, an authenticated network app, or a local streaming option such as Paramount+ for eligible CBS games. Reception, ZIP code, provider authentication and device support all matter.

Out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games
NFL Sunday Ticket is the principal legal product for eligible out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games. The NFL says it is available through YouTube and YouTube TV, and it is separate from NFL+; see the league’s Sunday Ticket access guidance. It is not a universal pass to every NFL broadcast. Local-market rules still apply, and nationally televised, Thursday, Monday, NFL Network and special-event games remain on their designated outlets.
National and exclusive windows
The NFL’s 2026 schedule demonstrates the split: Thursday Night Football is assigned to Prime Video; Sunday Night Football to NBC and Peacock; and Monday Night Football to ESPN and ABC. The schedule also lists selected games on NFL Network, Netflix and other partners. The assignments can be checked on the NFL’s 2026 prime-time schedule.

Why Sunday Ticket would not have solved everything
Sunday Ticket is best understood as an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon package. It does not replace local broadcasts or the league’s national windows. A fan who wants one Seahawks game while traveling may also find a full-season package poor value, and an injured player’s need for out-of-market access may be temporary. No ordinary U.S. consumer subscription should be advertised as a guaranteed one-stop solution for every game, market and device.
Where NFL+ fits
NFL+ is a separate product, not Sunday Ticket. The NFL’s support page currently shows regular NFL+ at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year, and NFL+ Premium at $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year; those prices were displayed on a page dated January 27, 2026 and can change. See the NFL pricing page.

According to the league’s plan comparison, live local and primetime games are limited to phones and tablets. Premium adds replays, All-22 film, NFL Pro and RedZone, with supported-device rules for replays. That makes NFL+ useful for mobile viewing and analysis, but it is not a television replacement for out-of-market Sunday afternoons. The NFL plan guide lists the current feature distinctions.
A practical legal viewing checklist
- Identify the game window. Determine whether it is local Sunday afternoon, out-of-market Sunday afternoon, Thursday, Sunday night, Monday, NFL Network or a special event.
- Check your location. Your ZIP code and current travel location can change which broadcast is considered local.
- Match the device. A service may carry a game but restrict live viewing to a phone, tablet, television app or authenticated provider.
- Verify schedule changes. Flex scheduling can move a game to a different network or streaming service.
- Use the NFL’s viewing guide. The league’s ways-to-watch guide lists services such as Sunday Ticket, NFL+, FOX, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN, Prime Video and Netflix. It is more reliable than assuming one subscription covers a whole season.
Why pirate streams remain tempting
Pirate sites offer an apparent shortcut: one search can produce a game without deciding whether the contest is local, out of market or exclusive to a particular platform. That convenience explains their appeal, but it does not make the stream legal, safe or dependable.

- Video feeds can disappear, buffer or switch addresses during a live game.
- Deceptive advertising, phishing pages, intrusive notifications and malware are potential risks on untrusted streaming sites.
- Copyright infringement is distinct from security or fraud: a site can present legal exposure without every user-facing hazard being proven in a particular incident.
- Do not assume that a stream’s visibility proves who operates it or how the feed was obtained.
Sports leagues have argued that live-stream enforcement is difficult because ordinary takedown procedures can take hours or days—too late to protect a game whose value is concentrated in its live window. Ars Technica described that position in reporting on requests by the NFL, NBA and UFC for faster removal mechanisms. A takedown request is not the same as confirmed removal, and the leagues’ enforcement argument should not be treated as a settled technical or legal conclusion.
The international and travel complications
Travel can change the answer midseason. A viewer may lose access to a home-market broadcast or gain access to another local market after changing locations. NFL+ is U.S.-only; the NFL directs international viewers to DAZN, and its support documentation says NFL+ is unavailable in U.S. territories. Details are summarized in the league’s availability guidance.
Why the incident resonated
Woolen’s apparent choice was not defensible as a legal viewing method, but the surrounding frustration was understandable. A player can have money, broadband and industry connections and still face a weekly decision tree involving local rights, Sunday Ticket, national networks, mobile restrictions and changing schedules. That is why few people were truly shocked: the image made a wealthy athlete look like an ordinary fan confronting an unnecessarily complicated product.
The useful lesson is not that piracy is harmless or that legal access is impossible. It is that the NFL’s commercial rights structure makes “just watch the game” a location- and device-dependent instruction. Checking the exact game window and the official viewing route is the reliable alternative to an unstable, risky pirate stream.
