Google TV’s integration with The Roku Channel is primarily a discovery feature, first reported on September 17, 2024. After you install the Roku app and enable it under your Google TV profile’s services, Roku Channel movies, shows and some channels can appear in Google TV search and recommendations. Selecting a result may hand you off to The Roku Channel app; it does not put Roku’s entire catalog inside Google TV or make every title free.
What changed in Google TV
The Roku Channel app was already available on Google TV and some Android TV devices before the broader discovery change; availability through the Google Play Store was reported in July 2023 (Android Central’s Roku coverage). The September 2024 update made Roku Channel programming more visible alongside other providers in Google TV search and recommendation surfaces (Android Central, September 17, 2024).
That distinction matters:
| Layer | What it means |
|---|---|
| App installation | The Roku Channel is installed on your Google TV device. |
| Discovery | Google TV may index eligible Roku Channel titles in search, recommendations or content rows. |
| Playback | A result can open The Roku Channel app rather than play natively inside Google TV. |
| Account and billing | Turning on a service in Google TV selects it for discovery; it does not create or cancel a separate paid subscription (Google’s subscription guidance). |
Google does not promise indexing for every title on every service. Results depend on the title, country, device, account and current app support (Google TV service settings).
What “free” means on The Roku Channel
Much of The Roku Channel’s no-cost catalog is free with advertising, not ad-free. The service can also list premium subscription programming, rentals, purchases and titles that require another subscription. Licensing changes can remove a title or change its playback offer.

When Google TV shows several providers for one movie or show, inspect the card before starting:
- Confirm that the provider is The Roku Channel.
- Look for a “Free with ads” label.
- Check for subscription, rental or purchase wording.
- Note which app Google TV will open for playback.
In the United States, Google TV’s Free tab can collect ad-supported programming from participating providers. Google says that tab and its listings are subject to availability; other countries may show different tabs or partner integrations (Google’s tab and availability guidance).
Turn on The Roku Channel in Google TV
On a Google TV television or streamer
- Open the Google TV home screen.
- Go to Settings.
- Choose Accounts & Sign In or Accounts & Profiles, depending on the software version.
- Select the Google profile you use for recommendations.
- Open Your services.
- Find The Roku Channel and switch it on.
- Return home and search for a title, genre, actor or channel.
Google documents this service-management path but notes that available services vary by device, region and account. The Roku Channel may therefore not appear in every list.

Mobile and television menus are not identical. The current mobile instructions are documented by Google at Google TV Help.
If the service is missing
- Open the Google Play Store on the television or streamer.
- Search for The Roku Channel.
- Install or update the app.
- Reopen Google TV and check Your services again.

Installing the app is necessary for this workflow but does not guarantee that Google TV will index every available title.
Find Roku movies, shows and channels
Search directly
Use the on-screen Search control or the Google Assistant button and enter a title, actor, genre or channel. Google supports title and genre searches on both the device and mobile app (Google’s search instructions). Try queries such as “free comedy movies” to surface no-cost options, then compare the provider labels.

Browse free programming
US users can open the Free tab when it is available. Elsewhere, free Roku programming may appear in search or recommendation rows instead. A title can have multiple offers, so the first result is not necessarily the free one.
Start playback
Select the Roku Channel offer on the title page. Google TV may launch The Roku Channel app, where you complete playback. Live-channel availability and placement are not guaranteed for every device or market.
Why Roku results may not appear
- Region: The Roku Channel app or a particular title may not be licensed in your country.
- Device interface: Older Android TV software can have different service controls from the newer Google TV interface.
- Outdated software: Update both Google TV and The Roku Channel.
- Wrong profile: Service selections belong to the active Google profile.
- Incomplete indexing: Google does not guarantee recommendations for every show, movie or service.
- Account settings: Country, language and availability settings can change the tabs and providers shown.
After updating, verify the device’s country and Google Account region, revisit Settings → Accounts & Sign In → profile → Your services, and restart. If Google TV still shows nothing, search inside The Roku Channel itself. Google’s availability documentation is at Google TV Help.

How Google personalizes Roku recommendations
Google says recommendations can draw on your selected services, Watchlist, viewing history, entertainment searches, Google Assistant searches, likes and dislikes, YouTube activity and popular programming in your region (Google’s recommendation controls).
Consequently, enabling The Roku Channel alone may not transform the home screen immediately. Searching for and watching several titles, adding items to the Watchlist and using Like or Dislike controls gives Google more signals. The correct profile must be active. Disabling Web & App Activity or using Apps-only mode can reduce personalization; Apps-only mode also removes features such as Search and Google Assistant (Google’s Apps-only guidance).

| Choose Google TV when you want… | Choose the Roku app or Roku hardware when you want… |
|---|---|
| One search across several streaming services. | Roku’s native interface, live-channel guide and Roku-first browsing. |
| Watchlist-based and personalized cross-service recommendations. | To explore The Roku Channel’s own catalog without relying on Google indexing. |
| To compare free, subscription and paid offers on one title page. | To avoid the limits of Google TV’s service list on an older or unsupported device. |
Neither option removes advertising or licensing restrictions. If you already own a compatible Google TV device, enabling the service costs nothing; buying hardware is unnecessary just to expose Roku Channel listings.

Disable The Roku Channel integration
- On Google TV, open Settings.
- Choose Accounts & Profiles (or Accounts & Sign In).
- Select the Google profile.
- Open Your services and switch off The Roku Channel.
In the mobile app, open your profile menu, tap Manage services, and deselect The Roku Channel. Removing the service from Google TV changes recommendations; it does not cancel a subscription billed separately by Roku or another provider (Google’s subscription clarification).
The Bottom Line
Google TV is now a more convenient starting point for finding The Roku Channel, especially for ad-supported viewing, but it remains a discovery layer. Install and enable the app, verify each title’s offer, and expect regional, catalog and playback limits.
