On a Mac or Windows PC, the practical bulk method is to open Library > Songs, select the tracks, and choose Download. On iPhone and iPad, Apple documents downloads for individual songs, albums, and playlists rather than a one-tap library-wide command. Music purchased from the iTunes Store is separate and does have a Download All option.
First decide what you mean by “download”: offline playback in Apple Music, a permanent iTunes Store purchase, or ordinary audio files that you can copy as a backup. The steps and result are different for each.
Choose the right method for your library

Apple Music subscription downloads are app-managed. Apple says music downloaded from Apple Music to a computer cannot be burned to a disc or manually transferred to an iPhone, iPad or iPod; it must be downloaded directly to the destination device through Apple Music. They are not ordinary DRM-free audio files.
Music availability can vary by country or region, and a track being visible in your library does not prove that it is downloaded locally.

Before you start
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on every device.
- Have an active Apple Music subscription if you are downloading catalog tracks. Sync Library also supports certain iTunes Match and purchased/imported music situations.
- Turn on Sync Library: on Mac, go to Music > Settings > General; in Apple Music for Windows, open the sidebar actions menu and choose Settings > General; on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Music and turn on Sync Library. See Apple’s Sync Library instructions.
- Wait for the cloud library to finish updating and confirm that expected songs, albums and playlists are visible. In Apple Music for Windows, the update status appears at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Check free storage. A cloud-library limit of up to 100,000 songs (excluding iTunes Store purchases) is not a promise that those songs will fit on your phone or computer; individual downloaded files still require local space. Apple states that synced files can be no larger than 200 MB.
- Use Wi-Fi and connect a large-library device to power. Cellular downloads can consume substantial data.
- Choose audio settings deliberately. Dolby Atmos and lossless or high-resolution lossless versions can use more storage and data than stereo downloads.
Download your Apple Music library on a Mac
- Open the Music app.
- Verify Sync Library under Music > Settings > General.
- In the sidebar, select Songs under Library.
- Select the songs you want to process. Selecting the full Songs view is the normal desktop bulk workflow, but the exact selection behavior can differ between macOS releases.
- Click the Download control, or use the equivalent contextual-menu command.
- Leave Music open and the Mac online until download indicators show completion.
- Temporarily disable Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, then play several tracks to verify offline access.
Apple documents downloading library items in Add and download music on Mac, but it does not promise a single universal keyboard command that selects every song in every current macOS version. If full-library selection is unreliable, download by playlist, artist, genre or smaller batches.
Download your Apple Music library on Windows
- Open the Apple Music app for Windows.
- Open the sidebar actions menu, choose Settings > General, and turn on Sync library.
- Select Songs under Library.
- Select the library tracks, then choose Download from the Download button or the More menu.
- Keep the computer online until the downloads finish, then test several songs with the internet disconnected.
The current Windows procedure is described in Apple’s Apple Music for Windows guide. Older iTunes installations call the equivalent cloud setting iCloud Music Library. Do not confuse this with Apple Devices syncing: Apple says subscription songs cannot be synced through the traditional Windows Apple Devices method while Sync Library is enabled. Download music on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Apple Music and add the song, album or playlist to your library if it is not already there.
- For an album or playlist, tap its Download button.
- For one song, tap the More button beside it and choose Download.
Apple’s current public instructions do not provide a general subscription-library “Download All” control on iPhone or iPad. A large playlist is usually easier than opening every album, but it only downloads the tracks actually in that playlist and available in your region. For a very large library, perform the bulk selection on a Mac or Windows PC, then download only the playlists or albums you need on the phone.

To inspect or remove downloads, open Settings > Apps > Music > Downloaded Music. The iPhone guide explains these controls at Add music to iPhone and listen offline. If Optimize Storage is enabled, iPhone can automatically remove downloads that have not been played recently.

Download every song purchased from the iTunes Store
Purchased music has a separate redownload workflow and an explicit Download All control. This covers qualifying iTunes Store purchases, not Apple Music subscription tracks.
Mac
- Open Apple Music.
- Choose Account > Purchased.
- Select Music if prompted.
- At the bottom of the purchased-music screen, choose Download All.

Windows PC
- Open Apple Music for Windows or iTunes for Windows.
- Choose Account > Purchased, then Music.
- Choose Download All.
The Windows options are listed at Apple’s PC redownload instructions. A purchase associated with another Apple Account, a hidden purchase, or a computer that has not been authorized can prevent it from appearing.

iPhone or iPad
- Open the iTunes Store app.
- Tap More > Purchased > Music.
- Choose All Songs, then tap Download All.

Imported, matched and uploaded music
A single library can contain Apple Music catalog tracks, iTunes Store purchases, imported files, matched songs, uploaded songs, playlists and music videos. Sync Library makes eligible content appear across devices, but it does not replace a backup of the source files.

How to verify that downloads are complete
- Use a Downloaded view or filter where your Apple Music app provides one.
- Check that download icons have disappeared or changed to the downloaded state.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data and play tracks from different parts of the collection.
- Test catalog songs, purchases, imported files, matched or uploaded tracks, and albums with Dolby Atmos or lossless variants.
- Open several playlists offline. A playlist showing in the library does not prove every track in it is local.
- Compare library and downloaded counts cautiously. Duplicates, alternate versions and unavailable tracks can make the numbers differ, and Apple does not provide a universal completion report.
If Sync Library is missing or songs are unavailable
Sync Library does not appear
- Confirm the intended Apple Account is signed in.
- Check that the Apple Music subscription is active.
- Turn on Sync Library in the correct device settings.
- Use the current Apple Music app, or remember that legacy iTunes calls the setting iCloud Music Library.
- Allow the library update to finish before retrying.

Songs or albums are missing
Check whether the item was ever added, is available in your country or region, is hidden, was deleted, or belongs to a playlist whose contents changed. Also check for a different Apple Account, an inactive subscription, an unfinished upload or match, or a local download removed to save space. Use Apple’s missing-song troubleshooting path rather than assuming every absence has the same cause.
The Download button is greyed out
The item may already be downloaded, may not yet be in the library, or may be unavailable or restricted. Sign-in, subscription and Sync Library problems can also disable the control. For purchases, verify that you are viewing the correct Purchased account; Apple specifically recommends checking whether the song or album is already in Apple Music when the purchase download control is unavailable.

When storage runs out
- Download in batches by playlist, artist or genre instead of starting with the entire library.
- Prefer stereo downloads if Dolby Atmos versions are unnecessary.
- Enable lossless or high-resolution lossless only when the quality and storage trade-off is acceptable.
- Use Optimize Storage only if automatic removal of less recently played music is acceptable.
- Remove downloads without deleting the library entry when you need space.
- Use a Mac or PC with adequate disk space as the main offline collection, while keeping original imported files separately backed up.
Higher-quality settings use substantially more data and storage; Apple’s iPhone guide describes the storage controls at Add music to iPhone and listen offline.
Does downloading back up your music?
No. Apple Music subscription downloads provide offline playback inside Apple Music and depend on the service, account and availability of each item. They are not a normal MP3, AAC, WAV or ALAC archive that you can copy freely.
For protection against disk failure or a library mistake, back up imported originals separately. Redownload purchased music through the Purchased screen and retain a separate computer backup where practical. Do not rely on third-party “Apple Music downloader” utilities that promise DRM-free subscription exports; they may violate Apple’s terms, fail with protected content or create security risks.
