Yes—you can watch excellent anime legally in the United States without paying for a subscription, rental, purchase, or free trial. The trade-off is usually advertising, a rotating catalog, or a scheduled live channel rather than full on-demand access. This guide focuses on ten worthwhile series and identifies the zero-cost route for each.
US availability note: Catalogs change by country, platform, season, language version, and licensing date. Check the service’s current title page before starting. VIZ documents those variables at its streaming guide.

The 10 best free anime picks
1. Death Note
Best for: Someone who has never watched anime and wants a compact, high-concept thriller.
#1 Best Overall
A bored student gains a supernatural notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it. The resulting battle of intellects is easy to follow, tense from the opening episodes, and short enough to feel manageable compared with a long-running shonen.
Where to watch free: Tubi’s June 15, 2026 anime guide lists Death Note (Subtitled) as free to watch: Tubi’s anime guide. This is ad-supported, on-demand viewing; verify the live title page and episode coverage first.
Caveat: The subtitled listing is the documented option, so do not assume an English dub or every related special is included.
2. Hunter x Hunter
Best for: Viewers who want a richly constructed adventure with memorable friendships and escalating challenges.

Gon Freecss sets out to become a Hunter and find his missing father. The Hunter Exam gives the early story a clear goal, while later arcs broaden the world and moral stakes. It rewards a longer commitment without requiring prior knowledge of another franchise.
Where to watch free: Tubi’s current free-anime coverage discusses Gon and the Hunter Exam, indicating the series in its offering. Confirm the individual US title page at Tubi before watching.
Caveat: Catalog presence, seasons, and dub or subtitle options can change; the cited coverage does not guarantee complete access.
3. Naruto
Best for: Anyone ready for a substantial, familiar action-adventure binge.

Naruto Uzumaki, an outcast ninja, pursues recognition while forming teams and confronting increasingly serious threats. Its emotional payoffs and large cast made it a gateway series for many viewers, although its length and filler episodes demand patience.
Where to watch free: VIZ lists Naruto among its major properties and identifies possible partners including Tubi, Pluto TV, Roku, Peacock, and YouTube. Use VIZ’s streaming page and the current partner title pages to determine which seasons and versions are free in the US.
Caveat: A partner may carry only selected seasons, episodes, or a scheduled channel feed. Do not treat the entire franchise as automatically free.
4. Code Geass
Best for: Fans of political intrigue, tactical battles, and morally complicated decisions.
Exiled prince Lelouch receives a power that lets him command people and uses it to challenge an oppressive empire. The series combines strategic mind games with large-scale drama and frequent reversals.
Where to watch free: Crunchyroll lists Code Geass among titles that have aired on its free Crunchyroll Channel: official channel information.
Caveat: Crunchyroll Channel is a scheduled 24/7 stream, not the regular on-demand library. You may have to wait for an episode and cannot assume the current lineup includes the complete series.
5. Psycho-Pass
Best for: Viewers who prefer dark science fiction to conventional tournament action.

In a future where a system measures citizens’ probability of committing crimes, inspectors and enforcers investigate people whose scores become dangerous. Its procedural structure leads into questions about surveillance, free will, and justice.
Where to watch free: Crunchyroll identifies PSYCHO-PASS as a title that has aired on Crunchyroll Channel. Check the channel’s current schedule and supported device list.
Caveat: The free route is schedule-dependent; season, subtitle, and dub availability should be confirmed separately.
6. Ranking of Kings
Best for: A visually unusual fantasy with an emotionally direct hero.
Prince Bojji is small, deaf, and underestimated, yet determined to become a worthy king. The deceptively simple art style supports a story about courage, betrayal, friendship, and political power.
Where to watch free: It is among the titles Crunchyroll says have aired on Crunchyroll Channel.

7. To Your Eternity
Best for: Viewers seeking supernatural drama and grief rather than nonstop combat.

An immortal being takes different forms while learning what it means to be human through the people it encounters. The episodic beginnings grow into a larger story about memory, attachment, and loss.
Where to watch free: Crunchyroll lists To Your Eternity among previous Crunchyroll Channel favorites.
Caveat: The channel format makes it a discovery option, not a guarantee that every season is currently running.
8. Horimiya
Best for: A concise, approachable romance and school-life story.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPopular Kyoko Hori and quiet Izumi Miyamura discover sides of each other that classmates never see. Their relationship develops with unusually little melodrama, while the supporting cast keeps the show warm and funny.
Where to watch free: Horimiya has aired on Crunchyroll Channel. Check the current lineup for US access.
Caveat: The scheduled feed may not begin at episode one, and the available language track can differ from the one you want.
9. Moriarty the Patriot
Best for: Mystery and crime fans who want a Sherlock Holmes-adjacent perspective.
Best Value
William James Moriarty positions himself as a “consulting criminal” who targets Britain’s entrenched class system. The series mixes elaborate schemes, social critique, and detective confrontations rather than relying on battle scenes.
Where to watch free: Crunchyroll lists it as a title that has aired on Crunchyroll Channel.
Caveat: Treat this as a rotating-channel recommendation. Check whether the current broadcast includes the episodes you need.
10. Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals
Best for: A lighter comedy break from the darker selections above.

Familiar ninja personalities become the setup for sketches, training jokes, and deliberately exaggerated misunderstandings.
Where to watch free: Tubi’s free-anime editorial coverage includes Rock Lee programming. Confirm the exact US title page, episode list, and language version at Tubi.
Caveat: It works best if you already recognize the Naruto cast, and the free listing may not include every episode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to watch anime legally for $0
- Start with Tubi. It is the clearest route for selecting a title and episode on demand, with commercial interruptions. Search the current US catalog rather than relying on an old list.
- Use free live channels for discovery. Crunchyroll Channel requires no subscription or signup, but is a 24/7 scheduled feed available on select platforms including LG Smart TVs, Vizio Smart TVs, Amazon Freevee, and Roku. Its lineup changes regularly. Pluto TV offers a similar free, ad-supported FAST model.
- Check official distributor uploads. VIZ and other rights holders may place selected episodes on official YouTube channels. Territory and episode coverage must be confirmed for the US.
- Check your public library. Hoopla and comparable services can provide ad-free borrowing when your library participates. A library card and monthly borrowing limits may apply.
- Verify before committing. Confirm the US region, season, episode completeness, subtitle or dub track, account requirement, and whether the route is on-demand or live.
What free services cannot promise
- Permanent access: streaming licenses can expire or move between platforms.
- A complete franchise: later seasons, films, specials, or spin-offs may be elsewhere.
- Every language version: a free listing may include subtitles but not an English dub, or vice versa.
- On-demand control: a live FAST channel may not let you start at episode one, pause indefinitely, or choose the next episode.
- Ad-free or offline viewing: free ad-supported services generally provide neither.
- Worldwide access: the same title can be licensed differently outside the United States.
Which pick should you start with?
- New to anime: Death Note
- Want a long adventure: Naruto
- Want the strongest adventure structure: Hunter x Hunter
- Want romance: Horimiya
- Want science-fiction suspense: Psycho-Pass
- Want political strategy: Code Geass
- Want emotional fantasy: To Your Eternity
- Want a distinctive fantasy world: Ranking of Kings
- Want mystery and crime: Moriarty the Patriot
- Want comedy: Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals
- Want no-signup channel discovery: Crunchyroll Channel, where supported
Why not use unofficial streaming sites?
Stick to official ad-supported platforms, licensed FAST channels, public-library services, and clearly authorized uploads. Unofficial aggregators can expose you to malware, deceptive advertising, copyright infringement, broken episodes, and unstable access. You do not need them to watch these recommendations legally for no monetary cost.
