The headline changes were dual-format viewing (portrait on a phone, landscape elsewhere), live rewind for selected viewers, and 2K (1440p) streaming. By August 16, 2026, Twitch had advanced the rollout of vertical viewing and announced a June 2026 2K launch for all Partners and Affiliates, but its official updates still did not confirm universal access to rewind.
What Twitch announced—and what is actually available
The Rotterdam announcement covered mobile viewing, production and delivery, monetization, clips, discovery and Watch Streaks. Each feature has a different rollout state, so “Twitch is getting vertical streams” should not be read as “every channel has every feature now.”

Twitch’s original announcement is at Twitch’s Rotterdam product update. Its later 2026 update is at Everything we announced at TwitchCon Rotterdam 2026.
How dual-format and vertical viewing works
This is not simply Twitch cropping a landscape stream. Twitch planned a broadcast that can provide both horizontal and vertical layouts. A desktop viewer continues to see the landscape presentation. A mobile viewer holding a phone upright sees the portrait layout; rotating the phone returns to the horizontal presentation.

What creators have to build
Initial OBS support was planned with Aitum Vertical. A creator may need a second scene or layout with portrait-safe positions for gameplay, facecams, alerts, browser sources, chat and captions. Important information should stay near the center so it remains useful in either composition. A narrow frame can hide a game HUD, subtitles or wide software interface even when the landscape scene looks perfect.
- Design and test a dedicated portrait canvas rather than relying on an automatic crop.
- Reposition facecams and alerts so they do not cover the main action.
- Check chat and moderation visibility in the portrait layout.
- Measure encoding load and upload stability if the computer produces multiple variants locally.
- Keep a fallback landscape-only scene for games or applications that do not translate well to a narrow frame.
Twitch later described Enhanced Broadcasting as able to encode multiple variants, with server-side transcoding intended to reduce system strain for Partners and many Affiliates. That does not remove the need to design and test the scenes themselves.
Who benefits most
Just Chatting, IRL, art, cooking and reaction streams generally have an easier portrait composition than wide strategy, simulation or interface-heavy games. Vertical viewing is a mobile presentation layer, not proof that every type of content should be redesigned around a phone.
How to check access
- Update the Twitch mobile app.
- Open a channel on a phone while holding it vertically, then rotate the phone and compare the layouts.
- Streamers should check the Creator Dashboard, broadcasting settings and their OBS integration for account-level options or invitations.
- Do not assume that installing a third-party plugin alone activates Twitch’s server-side dual-format feature.
Twitch began with a limited channel test and gradual expansion. Its May 2026 update said wider rollout was planned for June 2026, but availability can still depend on the channel, account, app version, region and rollout phase.

What live rewind is supposed to do
Rewind is intended for a viewer who joins late, misses a moment or briefly leaves a stream. The proposed journey is:
- Move back to an earlier point in the live broadcast.
- Watch the missed section.
- Resume playback and return to the live point.
That is different from opening a completed VOD, downloading a stream or rewinding indefinitely. It would not necessarily restore content that Twitch or a channel has removed, and a viewer watching behind live may temporarily miss real-time chat, alerts or an unfolding event.
Twitch announced a test with a small number of viewers in summer 2025. The available official 2026 update does not say that rewind became universal, so treat it as announced and tested rather than guaranteed on every account.
What Twitch 2K streaming means
Twitch uses “2K” for 1440p, a higher-resolution option than 1080p. The plan combines higher bitrates, the HEVC codec and Enhanced Broadcasting, with automatic quality adjustment based on a viewer’s connection. Twitch’s May 2026 update cited ceilings of up to 9 Mbps at 1440p and 7.5 Mbps at 1080p.

Who gets it
The 2025 announcement described gradual beta access for Partners and Affiliates, including a waitlist. Twitch’s 2026 update said 2K streaming would launch to all Partners and Affiliates in June 2026. It did not promise the option to every Twitch account.
Resolution is not the same as quality
1440p can reveal more detail, but a stable, well-encoded 1080p stream can look better than a poorly configured 1440p broadcast. Higher resolution can require more upload capacity, encoder headroom and local storage, and older devices or slower connections may struggle. A viewer’s display and bandwidth also determine whether the extra pixels matter.
- Consider 1440p when fine detail is central and the connection and encoder have clear headroom.
- Stay at 1080p when stability, fast motion or broad device compatibility matters more.
- Test motion, dropped frames and playback on representative devices before changing a regular show.
Combos and streamer-led gift-sub promotions
Combos
Combos let a viewer start a Bit-based sequence with a tap. Other community members can add Bits, extending the Combo and triggering increasingly large animations. Twitch described the feature as a closed beta and later planned to integrate it into the Cheering experience. Bits are Twitch’s paid support system, so Combos are not free donations, and animated effects will not suit every channel or viewer.
Gift-sub promotions
The original Rotterdam plan gave Partners and Affiliates 70 promotional hours per year, up to seven promotions, with an initial 35% discount on bundles of five or more gift subscriptions. Twitch later updated the program: its January 2026 product update described a 96-hour annual allowance and three promotional tokens, while retaining the 35% discount on qualifying gift-sub bundles. The later figures are the appropriate ones for current coverage; the 70-hour/seven-promotion figures were the initial plan.

Monetization before Affiliate status
Twitch said all streamers would gain selected monetization and community tools before reaching Affiliate. A streamer below Affiliate could accrue revenue through those tools and use funds earned on Twitch to buy gift subs and Bits. Under the announced distinction, however, external payouts remained reserved for Partners and Affiliates. “Can earn account value” is not the same as “can cash out like an Affiliate.” Twitch also said it would make Affiliate qualification easier.

Clips
The proposed clip changes cover several different objects. A clip made during a live stream is not a VOD, and a suggested clip surfaced by Twitch is not necessarily a clip personally selected by the streamer. Twitch announced suggested clips based on engaging moments, easier review and editing after a stream, and less disruptive clipping without leaving the broadcast. It also announced Clip Leaderboards, “Top Clipper” chat badges and reactions on Clips.
Leaderboards and badges recognize clip activity or performance; Twitch did not describe them as a separate monetization program.
Watch Streaks
Watch Streaks reward regular returns to a channel, with channel points among the announced benefits. Twitch said a viewer who misses an unscheduled or unusually timed stream could preserve the streak by watching a clip or VOD from that missed broadcast. The announcement described an upcoming expansion, not a feature that should be assumed on every channel.

What this says about Twitch’s strategy
Twitch is trying to serve two viewing modes at once: long-form, chat-centered live communities and fast, mobile-first discovery through portrait viewing, Clips, Stories and the Discovery Feed. Twitch linked those mobile surfaces to increases in video plays and channel follows. The strategy adds short-form discovery to Twitch’s existing subscriptions, Bits, Hype Trains and chat; it does not turn every Twitch stream into a short-video product.
Should a streamer change their setup?
Use this checklist before buying hardware or rebuilding a production workflow:
- Audience: How much of the channel’s viewing is mobile?
- Content: Does the subject remain legible in a narrow frame?
- Scenes: Can the team maintain a second layout for camera, alerts, captions and gameplay?
- Encoding: Is there CPU/GPU headroom for the selected workflow?
- Upload: Is upstream bandwidth stable under sustained load?
- Moderation: Can moderators still see the information they need?
- Value: Would 1440p materially improve this content, or would reliable 1080p serve more viewers?
Prototype with existing equipment before purchasing a capture card, camera, GPU or paid streaming suite. OBS Studio is a free, open-source option for building scenes; Aitum Vertical is relevant to portrait workflows; and Streamlabs Desktop offers an integrated production approach. None of these products can guarantee Twitch-side eligibility for vertical video, 2K or rewind.
Bottom line on availability in August 2026
Twitch’s Rotterdam announcement was a roadmap with staggered tests and launches. Dual-format viewing had moved beyond its initial beta, and Twitch announced 2K access for all Partners and Affiliates from June 2026. Rewind remains the most important qualification: it was announced and tested, but the official 2026 material available for this article does not confirm universal access. Check the app, Creator Dashboard and account-level invitations rather than assuming that a feature mentioned at TwitchCon is active for every channel.
