It combines on-demand movies and television with scheduled live channels, including entertainment, news, sports and niche programming. You do not pay a monthly subscription to use Tubi, but you do watch advertising, and the available catalog changes by country and over time.
What Tubi is in practical terms
Tubi is an internet streaming app and website. You can select an individual movie or episode to start on demand, or open a linear channel and watch whatever is scheduled at that moment. That makes Tubi both an AVOD (advertising-supported video on demand) service and a FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) service.
It is not a cable bundle, a premium subscription service such as Netflix or Max, or a free trial that later converts into a paid plan. It is also not a piracy site: Tubi says its programming is licensed from studio, network and independent content partners. The official service is available through Tubi’s website and supported apps.
Who owns Tubi?
Tubi was founded in 2014. Fox Corporation acquired it in 2020 for approximately $440 million, according to the Associated Press. It now operates within Tubi Media Group, Fox’s digital-business division.

The owner is Fox Corporation, not “20th Century Fox” or Fox News. Ownership of the platform also does not mean Fox owns every title: much of Tubi’s library is licensed from outside rights holders.
Tubi should not be confused with FOX One, Fox’s separate paid streaming product. Tubi is the free, ad-supported service.
Is Tubi really free?
Under Tubi’s stated U.S. model, there is no monthly subscription fee, no paid tier required to watch the catalog, and no credit-card payment required for Tubi access. Tubi explains its model in its Help Center.
“Free” means free of a subscription charge, not free of interruptions. Commercial breaks appear during programs, and their frequency can vary with the title, device, region and available advertising inventory. A television or app-store account might request payment details for device-level reasons; that does not necessarily mean Tubi is charging you.

How Tubi makes money
- It licenses programming. Films, series and channel feeds come from studios, networks, distributors and independent partners, including partners such as MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount.
- It removes the subscription barrier. A large audience can start watching without committing to a monthly bill.
- It sells advertising. Commercial revenue supports platform operations and helps fund payments to content partners.
Fox describes Tubi as a major advertising-supported digital business. The arrangement is straightforward: viewers exchange attention and commercial exposure for access rather than paying a recurring fee.
What can you watch on Tubi?
Movies and television
The catalog spans older studio films, syndicated and library television, crime, reality, comedy, drama, horror, action, documentaries, anime, children’s programming and lower-profile genre titles. Tubi’s strength is breadth and discovery rather than guaranteed access to every new theatrical release or prestige series.
Tubi Originals
Tubi Originals are programs commissioned, produced, acquired or branded for Tubi. The label covers different production and distribution arrangements; it does not mean every title was produced directly by Fox. Fox reported more than 70 new original titles premiering in fiscal 2025.
Live and linear channels
Linear channels are scheduled streams. You choose the channel, not necessarily the individual program or start time. Tubi also carries live-event streams where rights permit.

- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.

Fox’s figures show why channel and library counts should be treated as time-sensitive. Its fiscal 2025 annual report reported nearly 300,000 movies and television episodes and more than 320 linear channels as of June 2025. Fox’s current Tubi business page uses rounded figures of more than 250,000 movies and TV episodes and over 250 live channels. Different dates, counting methods or product updates can produce different totals.
News, sports and Fox programming
Tubi can carry live or scheduled news, local news feeds in some U.S. markets, sports programming and special events. Fox’s annual report cites selected programming such as The Masked Singer, Next Level Chef, live local and national news, sports and channels associated with TMZ and Gordon Ramsay programming.
These rights are not universal. Market, event, timing and blackout restrictions can apply, so Tubi is not a complete replacement for a paid sports package, every Fox network or a full cable bundle.
Where Tubi is available
Tubi lists the United States and selected international markets including Canada, Mexico, Latin America, the United Kingdom and Australia on its corporate About Us page. Availability is not identical across those territories: titles, channels, languages, release dates and live rights can differ.

A virtual private network is not a dependable way to obtain another country’s catalog. It can conflict with platform terms and may fail location checks or rights controls.

Use the official website or an official app-store listing. Avoid unofficial APK files, clone websites, pop-up mirrors and pages promising “free Tubi downloads.” Tubi says viewers should not need malware-prone redirects or a VPN to watch, although no online service can eliminate every privacy, account, device or advertising risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limitations to expect
- Advertising: Commercial breaks are part of the standard service; there is no established ad-free Tubi tier in the supplied official information.
- Rotating rights: A title can leave when its licensing window expires, even if a search engine still shows an old page.
- Regional catalogs: A U.S. movie, channel or event may not be available in Canada, the U.K., Australia or another market.
- Uneven selection: A very large catalog includes acclaimed studio titles alongside niche and lower-profile material.
- New-release gaps: Tubi is generally stronger for library viewing, genre exploration and free channels than for the newest theatrical films and premium series.
- Sports and local limits: Rights can be market-specific, event-specific or subject to blackouts.
- Children’s viewing: Family and children’s titles exist, but the general catalog is not a dedicated children’s service. Review ratings and current parental-control options in the app rather than assuming the whole platform is child-safe; advertising may still appear.
Tubi compared with paid streaming
| Criterion | Tubi | Paid subscription streamers |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | No Tubi subscription fee | A recurring fee is usually required |
| Advertising | Core part of the service | Depends on the plan |
| Catalog | Broad, rotating and often library-heavy | Often stronger in exclusives and current originals |
| Live channels | Yes, through scheduled streams | Varies by service |
| Premium sports | Limited and rights-dependent | Depends on the service or package |
| Best use | Free supplemental viewing and browsing | Stable access to curated or exclusive programming |
Neither model is universally better. Tubi favors viewers who value zero monthly cost and a large discovery pool; paid services favor viewers who prioritize fewer ads, newer exclusives or more predictable access.
Tubi compared with other free services
| Service | Distinctive emphasis |
|---|---|
| Pluto TV | Strong scheduled-channel experience and Paramount-related programming |
| The Roku Channel | Free movies, shows and channels with particular convenience on Roku devices |
| Freevee | Amazon’s free ad-supported catalog and originals; branding and availability can change |
| Plex | Free ad-supported on-demand and live programming alongside personal-media-server tools |
| YouTube | A broader mix of creator videos, licensed free movies, rentals and ad-supported viewing |
Compare these services by whether you need on-demand titles or linear channels, device integration, originals, local news and sports, advertising tolerance, account requirements, country availability and how easily you can find a specific program. Their catalogs and rights are not interchangeable.
Fixing common Tubi problems
A listed movie will not play
- Search for the title inside Tubi rather than relying on an old search-engine result.
- Confirm your country and try another supported device or the web player.
- Update the Tubi app and your device operating system.
- Consult the supported-device guidance and Tubi Help Center if the problem continues.
The title may have left the catalog, lost playback rights in your region, or be affected by a temporary service issue.
Recommended Free Tools
A device asks for payment details
Some hardware ecosystems request payment verification for an account or app download. Tubi’s own access policy still says the service does not require a credit card; see its installation guidance for the device-account distinction.
Is Tubi worth using?
Tubi is a strong choice if you want to cut streaming bills, accept commercial breaks, enjoy older or niche movies and series, or want free scheduled channels on a familiar device. It is less suitable as your only service if you require ad-free viewing, every current prestige series, a stable catalog, comprehensive sports or an entirely child-focused environment.
