To add a sticker, create or open an Instagram Story, add a photo or video, tap Stickers in the Story editor, choose or search for a sticker, then move and resize it before tapping Your Story or another sharing option. Instagram’s sticker tray differs by account, country, app version and format, so you may not see every option.
Instagram describes the current workflow and availability caveats in its official sticker guide.
Add a sticker to an Instagram Story
- Open Instagram and tap Create, choose Story, or swipe right from the feed to open the Story camera.
- Take a photo or video, or select existing media from your camera roll.
- Tap the Stickers control in the top toolbar. Its icon and position can change as Instagram updates the app, so look for the function name rather than a particular design.
- Choose a sticker, or use the tray’s search field to find one such as GIF, Music, Link, Poll, Questions, Location, Mention, Add Yours or Cutouts.
- Drag the sticker into position, adjust it, and tap Your Story, Close Friends or another available sharing control.
The same basic path applies on iPhone and Android. The available controls can differ between a Story and a Reel.
Choose the right sticker

Instagram’s listed sticker families include Add Yours, Captions, Countdown, time and weather, Cutouts, Donation, GIF, Hashtag, Link, Location, Mention, Music, Poll and emoji slider, Questions, Quiz and Selfie. Instagram notes that not all stickers are available to everyone or in every format.

How to add popular stickers
GIF
- Open the Story editor and tap Stickers.
- Tap GIF.
- Search for a word, phrase, mood or creator, or browse the library.
- Tap a result, then drag, pinch or rotate it.
This is also the workflow documented by GIPHY. A GIF sticker is not the same as uploading a GIF file as your Story’s main media.
Music
- Tap Stickers and choose Music.
- Search for a song or browse recommendations.
- Choose the lyric, cover-art or compact-player design offered for that track.
- Select the song segment, position the sticker and publish.
Music access and song catalogs vary with licensing, country and account type. A missing song or Music sticker is therefore not necessarily an app fault. Add Yours Music lets you prompt followers to contribute a song; Meta announced it with Frames, Reveal and Cutouts in May 2024.

Link
- Tap Stickers, then Link.
- Enter or paste a complete destination URL and confirm it.
- Move and resize the sticker so viewers can tap it easily.
- Publish the Story.
Tapping a Link sticker sends viewers to the linked website, according to Instagram’s Link sticker help page. Typing a URL into ordinary Story text is not an equivalent guarantee of a tappable link. Organic Stories can use Link stickers, but an existing Story containing one may not be eligible for boosting; ads use a separate call-to-action treatment.
Poll, Questions, Quiz and emoji slider
- Open Stickers and select the interactive tool.
- Enter the question, prompt, answer choices or emoji.
- Place it where the text is readable and the control is large enough to tap.
- Publish and review responses through the Story’s viewer or insights controls.
- Poll: quick binary or choice-based feedback.
- Questions: open-ended replies.
- Quiz: multiple-choice question with a correct answer.
- Emoji slider: a scaled reaction rather than a discrete vote.
- Add Yours: invites viewers to add their own Story to a prompt or chain.
Location, Mention and Hashtag
- Tap Stickers and choose Location, Mention or Hashtag.
- Search for the place or username, or enter the hashtag.
- Select the correct result, position it and publish.
These may connect viewers to a place, account or hashtag page, subject to privacy and moderation settings. Instagram explains account mentions in its Story mention guidance.

Cutouts
- Start a Story and tap Stickers.
- Choose Cutouts, shown as a scissors control where available.
- Select a photo or video from your camera roll.
- Let Instagram identify the subject, or manually select the object.
- Tap Use sticker, then place the cutout.
Instagram says saved cutouts can be reused from the sticker tray, and eligible photos shared by public Instagram accounts may offer a Create sticker option. See the Cutouts help page. Selection is less reliable with low contrast, clutter, overlapping subjects, darkness, blur or very small objects.
Frames and Reveal
Frames present a memory in a print-like design and may include date or time information. Reveal hides Story content until a viewer interacts by sending a message, as described in Meta’s announcement. These newer formats are not guaranteed on every account.

Move, edit or remove a sticker
- Move: press and drag it.
- Resize: place two fingers on it and pinch inward or outward.
- Rotate: twist with two fingers.
- Change style: tap the sticker when alternate designs are supported.
- Edit: tap the sticker or its text field where editing is offered.
- Delete: drag it to the trash or remove area shown at the bottom of the editor. The visual target can change between versions.
You can generally layer multiple stickers with text, drawings, filters and media. Instagram does not publish one dependable maximum for every Story type, so avoid promising an unlimited or fixed number.
Why a sticker is missing

- The app is outdated or the feature is still rolling out to your account.
- The sticker is restricted by country, licensing, age, privacy or professional-account eligibility.
- You are editing a Reel, ad or another format whose tray differs from Stories.
- The tray is scrollable and the option is below the initially visible row.
- A temporary connection, cache, server or app problem is interfering.
Recovery checklist
- Confirm you are creating a Story, not a feed post or Reel.
- Close and reopen Instagram.
- Install the latest version offered for your iPhone or Android device; there is no verified universal minimum version for all stickers.
- Search the sticker tray by name instead of relying on visible icons.
- Try another account on the same phone, if available, and test a different network.
- Log out and back in only after confirming you know your credentials.
- Reinstall Instagram if ordinary troubleshooting fails.
- Use Instagram’s in-app help or reporting controls to report the problem.
Reinstalling cannot fix a server-side rollout or a regional restriction, so a successful result on another account or network is useful evidence about the cause.
Organic Stories, boosted Stories and ads
Do not apply advertising restrictions to ordinary Stories. Instagram’s boosting guidance lists restrictions involving Link stickers, GIFs, Music stickers, multiple stickers and other creative tools. If a Story cannot be boosted, recreate the promotion with the ad system’s approved call-to-action and creative options rather than assuming the organic Story workflow is broken.

Make stickers readable and safer
- Keep interactive controls large enough to tap and away from the top and bottom interface areas.
- Do not cover faces, subtitles, product details or the main subject.
- Use one clear call to action instead of stacking several competing stickers.
- Use captions where appropriate, strong contrast and text that remains readable over moving GIFs.
- Preview the complete Story before posting.
- Check location stickers for unintended disclosure and remember that mentions reveal an account relationship.
