Spotify Web Player lets you stream music, podcasts, and supported video directly from a browser at open.spotify.com—no desktop installation required. Open the site in a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, or Safari browser, choose Log in, search for content, and select Play.
What you need before using Spotify Web Player
- A Spotify account. Spotify offers both Free and Premium accounts; Premium is not stated as a requirement for opening the Web Player.
- An active internet connection.
- A reasonably current, supported browser.
- Working device volume, browser audio permission, and a usable output device.
- Protected-content (DRM) playback enabled if Spotify displays that requirement.
Use Spotify’s official domain rather than an unofficial “Spotify player,” downloader, or modified client. Spotify identifies its Web Player and authorized apps as supported access methods.
How to open Spotify Web Player
- Open Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, or Safari on your computer.
- Go to https://open.spotify.com/.
- Select Log in and use the sign-in method linked to your account.
- Use Search to find an artist, album, track, playlist, podcast, or show.
- Open the result and select Play.
Interface labels can vary by account, country, device, and product rollout. After playback starts, the lower player bar normally provides pause or resume, seeking, volume, queue, shuffle or repeat where available, and a device selector. Your Library returns you to saved content.

Music and podcasts
Search by title, artist, album, playlist, podcast, or show, then open the result and start playback. Shared Spotify links can also open directly in the Web Player. Save items to your library when the current interface offers a save control.

Video
Spotify documents music-video playback in the Web Player for supported content and accounts. When a release offers video, the Now Playing view may provide an audio/video switch. Availability depends on the title, account, country, and rollout; it is not available for every track.
Play on another device
Start playback, open the device selector, and choose an available compatible device. Spotify lists Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, Chromecast, Alexa, and Google Assistant among supported connection methods, subject to the hardware and network involved: Spotify supported devices.
Supported browsers and phones
Spotify’s current Web Player guidance (checked October 2026) describes desktop support for widely available versions of:
| Platform | Browser requirements listed by Spotify |
|---|---|
| Windows or macOS desktop | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, or Safari; Spotify describes support as browser versions updated within the last 30 months rather than one permanent version number. |
| Android | Android 6.0 or later with Chrome 87+, Samsung Internet 17+, or Firefox 115+. |
| iPhone or iPad | Chrome 87+ or Safari 15+. |
These requirements can change, so check Spotify’s Web Player help page if a newly updated browser stops working. Mobile browsers may also pause or stop audio when the screen locks or another app opens, depending on the operating system, browser, power settings, and Spotify’s implementation. Use the mobile app for predictable background listening.

Can you use Spotify Web Player for free?
The Web Player is an access method, not a separate subscription. Spotify’s US plans page offers Spotify Free alongside Premium. Exact ads, skips, playback-order controls, and availability can vary by market, platform, and account, so do not assume every Free account behaves identically.
For reference, Spotify’s US page showed these prices after displayed introductory offers on August 18, 2026: Individual $12.99/month, Student $6.99/month for eligible students, Duo $18.99/month, and Family $21.99/month. Prices, taxes, trials, eligibility, and plan terms can change; verify them at Spotify’s official plans page. Premium benefits relevant here include ad-free listening, greater playback control, and offline listening in supported apps—not a requirement merely to open the browser player.
Can you download Spotify songs in a browser?
Treat the Web Player as an online-streaming service. Spotify’s official offline instructions describe downloads in the mobile, tablet, and desktop apps: Premium users can download albums, playlists, and podcasts, while Free users can download podcasts. They do not provide a Web Player download path.
Spotify downloads are encrypted in-app access, not ordinary MP3 files. Do not use third-party ripping or downloader tools; they can create security, account-access, copyright, and terms-of-use problems.

Fix Spotify Web Player when it does not work
The page will not open
- Confirm that other websites load.
- Refresh Spotify and update the browser.
- Open open.spotify.com in a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block scripts, cookies, ads, or media.
- Try another supported browser.
- Try another network. School, work, hotel, and public Wi-Fi may restrict media or login services.
- If the browser still fails, use the official desktop app.
Private browsing is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent fix. If it works there, review Spotify’s site permissions, cookies, and extensions in your normal profile.
“Playback of protected content is not enabled”
This message usually means DRM or protected media is disabled.
Chrome
- Enter
chrome://settings/contentin the address bar. - Open the settings for
open.spotify.com. - Find Protected content IDs.
- Choose Allow or Default.
Chrome’s wording and location can change between releases.
Firefox
- Select Enable DRM in Spotify’s warning bar, if shown.
- If no bar appears, enter
about:preferences#content. - Under DRM content, enable Play DRM content.
Spotify refers to the required support as Widevine or DRM. On affected Windows 10 N editions, Spotify says the Microsoft Media Feature Pack may be required; this is not a blanket Edge requirement.

Spotify opens but there is no sound
- Raise the Web Player and system volume.
- Check that the browser tab is not muted.
- Confirm the operating system’s selected output device.
- Check whether the device selector is sending playback to another Spotify Connect device.
- Test sound in another tab or application.
- Try a private window or another supported browser to expose extension or DRM conflicts.
If every website is silent, investigate the device, operating system, browser, or network rather than Spotify alone.
“Something went wrong” or “Page not available”
- Reload the page.
- Sign out and back in.
- Test a private window.
- Update the browser.
- Try another supported browser and network.
- Check Spotify’s service-status channels for an outage.
- Use the desktop app if the Web Player remains unreliable.
Spotify’s broader troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting, checking the connection, clearing Spotify-specific cache or site data, and testing another device: Spotify playback troubleshooting.
Login problems
Make sure you are using the account’s original sign-in method—email, Apple, Google, or Facebook. Cookies, pop-up restrictions, and managed school or work networks can interrupt authentication. Try a private window first; if necessary, clear site data for Spotify specifically rather than wiping cookies for every website.
Tracks are unavailable or grayed out
A track may be unavailable in your market, removed or relicensed, affected by a failing connection, or associated with another offline state. Spotify notes that market availability can cause tracks to appear grayed out.

Web Player versus the Spotify app
| Need | Web Player | Desktop or mobile app |
|---|---|---|
| No installation | Open a browser and sign in. | Requires installation. |
| Offline listening | Spotify does not provide an official browser download path. | Official app-based downloads are supported under the applicable plan. |
| Shared or temporary computer | Convenient and leaves no installed Spotify program. | Less suitable where installation is restricted. |
| Mobile background playback | Behavior can vary with screen lock, browser, and power settings. | Generally the more dependable choice. |
| Browser or DRM restrictions | May require permissions, extension changes, or another network. | Spotify recommends the app when Web Player troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. |
Choose the Web Player for quick browser streaming, multiple computers, or a machine where installation is not allowed. Choose the app for offline downloads, dependable mobile background listening, longer sessions, or deeper operating-system integration.
Important limits and safety notes
- Spotify’s supported-devices guidance says one account can play on only one device at a time, so starting playback elsewhere can interrupt the current session.
- Do not promise uninterrupted mobile-browser playback after locking the screen or changing apps.
- Use official Spotify domains and apps. Avoid fake login pages, unofficial players, modified clients, and downloaders.
- Browser controls and labels change with account, market, device, and rollout; dated screenshots can become misleading.
