The movie behind that headline is No Country for Old Men, Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2007 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel. This R-rated, two-hour, two-minute neo-Western crime thriller was listed on Paramount+’s U.S. catalog as of August 18, 2026. Its Rotten Tomatoes score was 93% from critics and 86% from audiences on that date.
What No Country for Old Men is about
Llewelyn Moss, a Vietnam veteran and welder, discovers the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong in the Texas desert and takes a briefcase containing $2 million. That decision puts him in the path of Anton Chigurh, a methodical hitman sent to recover the money, while Sheriff Ed Tom Bell investigates the violence spreading through his county.

That setup suggests a conventional pursuit movie, but the Coens make the uncertainty itself the source of suspense. The story examines chance, personal responsibility, violence and the limits of law enforcement without revealing its major turns up front.
Why it is regarded as a Coen brothers standout
A controlled crime thriller with unusual restraint
The Coens combine crime-film mechanics—stolen money, bad decisions and pursuit—with bleak humor and moral unease. Long quiet passages, sparse exposition and carefully timed bursts of violence create tension without explaining every character or event.

- No Country For Old Men (Blu-ray + Digital)
A precise visual and sonic design
Cinematographer Roger Deakins turns the Texas landscape into an exposed frontier where distance offers little safety. The restrained score and detailed ambient sound make footsteps, doors, machinery and silence part of the suspense.
An ending that refuses an easy payoff
Rather than delivering the tidy emotional closure of a conventional chase thriller, the film leaves Sheriff Bell’s reflections to frame its larger questions about aging, violence and a changing world. That choice is central to the film’s lasting reputation.
The performances that define the film
Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh
Bardem plays Chigurh as an unnervingly disciplined presence whose private code is more frightening than a conventional backstory would be. The performance won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Rank #2
Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Ed Tom Bell
Jones supplies the film’s weary moral and philosophical counterpoint. Bell is experienced and conscientious, yet increasingly unsure that experience can contain the violence around him.
Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss
Brolin’s Moss is capable and resourceful, but he is not a spotless hero. His opportunistic choice to take the money drives the chain of events.
Kelly Macdonald and Woody Harrelson
Macdonald plays Carla Jean Moss, whose vulnerability gives the pursuit a human center. Harrelson appears as Carson Wells, another professional drawn into the hunt. Paramount+ lists both among the principal cast.

Is it really a Western?
Yes—but “neo-Western crime thriller” is more accurate than simply calling it a Western. The film is set in contemporary 1980s Texas rather than the nineteenth-century frontier, while preserving classic Western structures:
- vast, sparsely populated spaces;
- a fugitive crossing hostile terrain;
- an aging lawman confronting a changing society;
- individual codes of justice operating beyond institutions; and
- violence that feels both personal and elemental.
It belongs with modern Westerns that transplant frontier themes into present-day America, not with traditional cowboy adventures.
What the 93% Rotten Tomatoes score means
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer label “Fresh” means at least 60% of counted critics gave a positive review. The 93% figure therefore means 93% of counted critics reviewed No Country for Old Men positively; it is not a 9.3-out-of-10 average. Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 93% critics and 86% audience on August 18, 2026, and both figures can change as the database updates.

Awards and critical standing
The film won four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem and Best Adapted Screenplay. Paramount+ highlights that four-award achievement on its official movie page.
Calling it one of the Coens’ “greatest” films is an informed critical judgment, not an objective ranking. Different lists prioritize awards, Tomatometer scores, influence or genre achievement; Rotten Tomatoes’ Coen ranking, for example, places True Grit higher by its score-based method while identifying No Country for Old Men as the brothers’ Best Picture winner.
Best Value
Is it worth watching on Paramount+?
Choose it if you want
- a tense, intelligent crime story;
- a modern Western rather than a period adventure;
- slow-burn suspense and meticulously staged pursuit scenes;
- major performances from Bardem, Jones and Brolin; or
- a film that rewards discussion and repeat viewing.
Think twice if you prefer
- light entertainment or conventional heroism;
- frequent action instead of extended quiet tension;
- fully explained character motivations; or
- a neatly resolved ending.
The R rating reflects graphic violence, threats, criminal activity and sustained psychological menace, not merely occasional action.

Final verdict
No Country for Old Men is an excellent choice if you want a beautifully controlled, deeply unsettling neo-Western with extraordinary performances and serious ideas about fate, violence and aging. It is less suitable for viewers seeking a conventional action movie, but for Coen brothers fans and serious crime-thriller viewers, its 93% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and four Academy Awards reflect a substantial achievement rather than empty hype.
