Netflix did not cancel every Basic account on July 19, 2023. It removed the $9.99 Basic ad-free plan from signup and rejoining flows in the United States and United Kingdom. Existing Basic subscribers could keep it unless they changed plans or canceled. For new or returning U.S. customers, Standard at the then-current $15.49 per month became the cheapest ad-free option.
This is a historical price story, not a verified 2026 rate card. Netflix says plan availability and prices depend on the country selected, taxes, billing method and bundles. Check the current Netflix Plans and Pricing page or official signup flow before subscribing.
What Netflix changed on July 19, 2023
Netflix phased out Basic for new and rejoining members in the U.S. and U.K. The company had already made the same change in Canada. Netflix’s Q2 2023 shareholder letter described the move as part of its broader pricing, advertising and paid-sharing strategy (Netflix Q2 2023 shareholder letter).
The distinction matters:
- New subscriber: could no longer select Basic.
- Rejoining subscriber: someone who canceled and later returned also could not select Basic.
- Existing subscriber: could remain on Basic under the reported grandfathering policy, unless they changed plans or canceled.
News headlines often called this “killing” Basic, but Netflix did not immediately remove the plan from every account.

U.S. plan lineup reported at the time
The following were the U.S. prices and features reported on July 19, 2023. They are historical figures, not confirmed 2026 prices.
| Plan | Monthly price (U.S., July 19, 2023) | Ads | Reported features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with Ads | $6.99 | Yes | Lower-priced entry tier; some titles unavailable |
| Basic | $9.99 | No | One simultaneous device, up to 720p, downloads on one device; available to existing eligible members |
| Standard | $15.49 | No | 1080p and two simultaneous devices |
| Premium | $19.99 | No | Four simultaneous devices and 4K/HDR |
Ars Technica reported the historical plan comparison and grandfathering terms in its July 19, 2023 coverage (Ars Technica). Netflix’s shareholder letter identified $6.99 as the new lower-priced U.S. entry point (shareholder letter).
How much more did ad-free viewing cost?
For a new or returning U.S. customer who wanted no ads, the historical minimum rose from Basic’s $9.99 to Standard’s $15.49:
- Monthly difference: $5.50.
- Annual difference: $66 before tax.
- Percentage increase: approximately 55.1%.
That is not a doubling of the former Basic price. The large visual gap was between the $6.99 ad-supported plan and the $15.49 ad-free plan, while the actual ad-free increase was about 55%.

Who was affected?
People who already had Basic
Continuously subscribed Basic members could keep the plan under Netflix’s reported policy. A plan change or cancellation could end that eligibility, so switching away and later trying to return was not equivalent to remaining subscribed.
New customers
New U.S. customers choosing an ad-free plan had to move to Standard or Premium. Standard cost more than Basic but added 1080p and a second simultaneous stream.
Customers returning after cancellation
Netflix treated rejoining customers like new signups for this purpose: Basic was no longer presented as an available choice.
Customers billed through a bundle
Telecom, television and app-store packages can show different names, prices or billing rules. The final charge may also include taxes or package-specific terms. Confirm the offer with the provider rather than assuming the direct Netflix lineup applies.

Why Netflix removed the tier
Netflix did not explicitly say in the cited material that it removed Basic solely to force customers into Standard or advertising. Its investor letter placed the decision within a monetization plan built around advertising, paid sharing and more sophisticated pricing.
The company said advertising created a lower entry price and could become a significant incremental revenue stream. It also reported that its ad-supported membership had nearly doubled since the first quarter of 2023, while remaining relatively small, and said it was improving ad measurement, targeting, viewing experience and content parity.
There is a reasonable business inference: eliminating the low-cost ad-free choice made the $6.99 ad tier more attractive to price-sensitive viewers and left ad-averse new customers with a substantially more expensive Standard option. That is an analysis of the plan design, not a direct Netflix admission.
Netflix also told contemporaneous coverage that, when advertising revenue was included, the U.S. ad plan generated greater total average revenue per member than the $15.49 Standard plan. That is a company-reported comparison, not an independently verified result for every customer or period (Ars Technica).

What viewers gave up or gained
If you accepted ads
Standard with Ads was the cheapest overall U.S. option in the historical lineup, at $6.99 per month. Commercial breaks applied, and some titles were unavailable because of licensing restrictions. Contemporary coverage put the unavailable share at up to roughly 10%, but the estimate varied by country and could change as licensing changed.
If you required ad-free viewing
Standard was the least expensive new-member ad-free plan in that lineup. A single viewer who only needed one stream and did not care about resolution could pay more without using the added capabilities.
If you shared a household
Standard’s two simultaneous streams and 1080p could justify part of the increase for a household. Premium added four streams and 4K/HDR for viewers with compatible equipment and a genuine need for them.
If you download documentaries or other programs
The former Basic plan supported downloads on one supported device at a time. Download limits and supported devices can differ by plan, so check the current plan details before changing an account.

How to decide what to do
- Check your status. If Basic still appears on your account, verify the plan name and price before making any change.
- Decide whether ads are acceptable. The historical ad tier was cheaper but included commercials and did not necessarily include every title.
- Match quality to your screen. 720p may be adequate for a small display; 1080p or 4K/HDR matters more on larger compatible screens.
- Count simultaneous viewers. One, two or four streams lead to different practical values.
- Check offline viewing. Confirm how many devices can download under the plan you are considering.
- Calculate actual use. If you watch only when a particular documentary or series arrives, canceling between releases or rotating services may cost less than keeping several subscriptions year-round.
- Review household and billing rules. Extra-member policies, taxes and bundle billing can change the total cost.
Is $15.49 still Netflix’s cheapest ad-free price?
It was the cheapest ad-free U.S. option reported on July 19, 2023; no current official 2026 price was published. Netflix’s official help page requires a country-specific selection and notes that prices, taxes, plan availability and package billing vary. Do not use the 2023 figure to infer today’s U.S. or U.K. lineup. Check Netflix’s current plan information and the signup page immediately before subscribing.
Common misunderstandings
- “Basic disappeared from every account.” No. Existing eligible subscribers were grandfathered unless they changed plans or canceled.
- “$15.49 was the cheapest Netflix plan.” It was the cheapest ad-free plan for new and returning U.S. customers in the reported lineup; $6.99 with ads was cheaper overall.
- “Netflix doubled the price.” The historical move from $9.99 to $15.49 was approximately a 55.1% increase.
- “The ad tier had exactly 10% fewer titles everywhere.” The roughly 10% figure was a contemporaneous estimate and varied by market and licensing.
- “A current help-page display proves Basic is available in the U.S.” Netflix’s documentation is country-dependent; a display for another market cannot establish U.S. availability.
Bottom line for documentary viewers
Netflix’s July 2023 move was a restriction on who could obtain Basic, not an immediate cancellation of every Basic subscription. Existing members could preserve the $9.99 ad-free plan by staying on it; new and returning U.S. members had to choose between the cheaper ad-supported tier and a higher-priced ad-free plan. Because Netflix has changed plans and prices since then, use the current country-specific signup page—not the historical $15.49 figure—to make a 2026 decision.
