Spotify Car Thing stopped operating on December 9, 2024. The device may still power on, but Spotify ended the online service that made it a functional dashboard controller. A factory reset, replacement cable, new phone, or ordinary re-pairing cannot restore official Spotify operation. Refund discussions reportedly had a January 14, 2025 deadline, which has now passed.
What happened to Spotify Car Thing?
Car Thing was Spotify’s first hardware product: a small, Spotify-focused dashboard accessory with a touchscreen, physical dial, programmable buttons, and voice controls. It connected to a phone for data, required a Spotify Premium account, and controlled online Spotify playback rather than storing music as an independent player. Spotify launched it broadly in the United States for $90 in February 2022 (launch details).
Spotify stopped manufacturing Car Thing in July 2022, citing demand and supply-chain issues (contemporary report). In May 2024, it told users that existing units would stop operating. The final shutdown occurred on December 9, 2024, when owners began seeing a message that the product was “no longer operational” (shutdown report).

Why does a Car Thing still turn on but not work?
This is primarily a product and service shutdown, not evidence that every unit suffered simultaneous physical hardware failure. Car Thing depended on Spotify-controlled account, registration, and playback services. Once Spotify ended support, the device could no longer complete the normal online operating flow. Spotify has not published a component-by-component technical postmortem naming every backend service that was retired.

As a result, a unit can boot, illuminate its display, or show parts of its interface while being unable to authenticate, browse Spotify, or control playback. A different phone or account does not change that product-wide condition.
Can a factory reset fix Car Thing?
No—not when the problem is the discontinued service. A reset can clear local settings during an ordinary setup problem, but it cannot recreate Spotify’s withdrawn infrastructure. Spotify’s former 2024 guidance told owners to reset the device and dispose of it according to local electronic-waste rules. Those original support pages now return “page not found,” so the instruction is historical rather than a currently maintained procedure (former settings page; contemporary report).

Refunds: what owners should know
The shutdown screen reportedly directed owners to contact Spotify customer service by January 14, 2025 to discuss refund options (reported notice). That date has passed. The wording described options, not an automatic full refund for every purchaser, and eligibility could have depended on purchase records, geography, account status, and Spotify’s process.
You can still ask Spotify support whether any exception is available, but no refund outcome should be assumed. A person who bought a used unit should not assume that any original-owner refund entitlement transfers with the device.

What should owners do now?
- Stop repeated troubleshooting. If the device reaches the shutdown message or cannot authenticate, new cables, accounts, and repeated pairing attempts will not restore the service.
- Factory-reset it if the menu remains usable. This removes local account and configuration data before disposal.
- Remove it from the vehicle. Do not rely on a nonfunctional screen or controls while driving.
- Recycle it as electronic waste. Follow your local collection or recycling rules rather than placing it in ordinary household rubbish.
- Do not sell it as a working Spotify accessory. Describe it accurately as shut down, collectible, or an experimental hardware project.
Could software hacking revive it?
Unofficial developers and hobbyists have explored repurposing Car Thing with released files or alternative software. These efforts are experimental: they may involve disassembly and flashing, can permanently brick the device, and do not restore official Spotify support (shutdown coverage).
Reporting also indicates that the hardware is too constrained for Android to be a straightforward replacement operating system (technical reporting). Do not treat random firmware downloads or online conversion claims as a dependable repair.

Choose by phone platform, existing vehicle support, wired versus wireless connection, available audio inputs, installation complexity, and long-term manufacturer support. CarPlay and Android Auto are the closest mainstream replacements, but neither is a standalone Spotify-only box.
Should you buy a used Car Thing?
No, not for normal Spotify use. “Powers on,” “screen works,” or “tested” does not mean the unit can authenticate and play Spotify. A used device is sensible only as a collectible or as the basis for an unofficial tinkering project, with the risk and uncertainty that entails. Sellers should not represent a shut-down unit as a functioning car controller.

Bottom line for former owners
Spotify Car Thing is now best treated as electronic waste, a collectible, or an experimental hardware platform. The December 9, 2024 shutdown ended its official function; the practical replacement is an existing CarPlay or Android Auto system, Bluetooth or AUX playback, an FM transmitter for very old cars, or a properly supported aftermarket head unit.
