There is no universal karaoke USB format. First identify your machine’s exact model and follow its manual. Then obtain a file type it supports, extract any ZIP archive, copy the complete files to a correctly formatted flash drive, safely eject it, and test one song.
For many Singing Machine systems that support MP3+G, every song needs two matching files: an .mp3 audio track and a .cdg lyrics-graphics file. A ZIP archive is usually only the delivery package, not the playable file.
Start with the machine model, not the USB port
Find the model number on the unit, manual, or manufacturer support page. Singing Machine separates USB models by MP3+G, ZIP/MP3+G, and MP4 support, so a USB socket alone proves nothing. Check the manual for:
- supported extension: MP3, MP3+G/CDG, MP4, or a proprietary package;
- maximum drive capacity and required filesystem;
- whether folders are allowed or a particular folder name is required;
- filename, catalog, or database requirements;
- how to select USB playback and where lyrics are displayed.

Match the manual’s wording to the files you prepare

Choose a legal, compatible source
Use authorized purchases or media you are entitled to copy. Select the format your machine actually supports:

- Manufacturer-linked stores can be the safest match for a supported model, but availability can change. Singing Machine’s current support material warns that its Karaoke Store is closing in mid-2026; download and back up purchases while access remains available if that notice applies to your machine. - Independent vendors may offer MP3+G, MP4, and audio-only MP3. BuyKaraokeDownloads’ instructions distinguish those choices and describe MP3+G as an MP3/CDG pair in a ZIP archive.
- Sunfly explains its MP3+G format at its FAQ; verify your machine before buying.
Streaming-app downloads are not automatically transferable MP3+G files. Do not assume a YouTube or subscription download is authorized, unencrypted, or playable from USB.
Prepare the USB drive
- Back up anything important on the drive. Formatting erases it.
- Read the machine’s capacity and filesystem requirement. Some VocoPro models, including Karaoke-Fan, specify a drive up to 32 GB and FAT or FAT32; that is a model-specific instruction, not a universal karaoke rule. Consult the Karaoke-Fan manual.
- If required, format the drive with the operating system’s standard utility using the specified filesystem. Older machines that expect FAT32 may reject an exFAT or NTFS drive.
- Reconnect the drive and confirm the computer can read it before copying songs.
For initial testing, use a basic USB flash drive within the stated limit rather than a portable hard drive, encrypted drive, or very high-capacity SSD.

Download and extract an MP3+G song
Choose MP3+G when lyrics are required. A normal MP3 supplies music but normally contains no lyric graphics.

Extract the ZIP on the computer with its built-in archive tool or an archive utility. For the Singing Machine iSM1030BT, the manufacturer explicitly says the ZIP cannot be played directly and both extracted files must be copied; its instructions are at this support page.

Check the pair
The files must have identical base names:
Artist - Song.mp3 Artist - Song.cdg
If you rename a song, rename both files identically except for the extension. A missing CDG, a spelling difference, or an extra suffix can leave music playing without lyrics.
Copy songs to the drive
- Open the USB drive on the computer.
- Create a folder only if the manual permits or requires one. For the first diagnostic test, the drive’s top level is simplest when allowed.
- Copy both files for one known-compatible song.
- Add additional matching pairs after that test succeeds.
- Do not copy only the MP3, leave files inside the ZIP, or add installers and unrelated downloads.
- Use the computer’s eject command before unplugging the drive.

Play the files and display lyrics
Insert the drive, select the machine’s USB function, choose the song, and start playback. Controls vary: the iSM1030BT uses its Function or CDG/USB selection, while VocoPro Karaoke-Fan uses MP3 input mode. Follow the model manual rather than a generic button sequence.

Some systems send lyrics to a television or other display through a video connection. Audio can work while lyrics remain invisible if the display cable, input, or output selection is wrong. MP3-only machines will not generate CDG lyrics; MP4-capable machines require a supported video file.
Troubleshoot by symptom

| Wrong speed or unusual audio | Suspect unsupported encoding parameters, a malformed file, multiple audio tracks, or an incompatible release; test a known-good track before blaming the drive. |
Copying songs from CD+G discs is a different job
Dragging files from an audio CD or CD+G disc is not equivalent to copying downloaded MP3+G files. CD+G stores lyric graphics alongside disc audio, and a computer may need a compatible optical drive plus specialized ripping software. The resulting files must then match the destination machine’s format; a disc made for one vendor’s ecosystem may not work on another. Keep this process separate from ordinary USB file copying and use media you are legally entitled to duplicate.
Keep a reliable library
- Retain the original ZIP downloads as a backup, even after extracting them.
- Keep a second backup on the computer or another storage device.
- Use consistent artist-and-title names while preserving matching MP3/CDG basenames.
- Test one song before transferring an entire collection.
- Write down the machine model, supported format, capacity limit, filesystem, and folder rule.
- Back up purchased tracks before a vendor or app changes access.
When a different machine or ecosystem is the better answer
If the desired files are MP3+G but the machine accepts only MP3, or if it requires a proprietary catalog, buying more songs or a larger drive will not overcome that limitation. Some VocoPro products advertise USB MP3/MP3+G support, such as ProjectorOke, while dedicated ecosystems such as TKaraoke use their own hardware and software assumptions. Treat these as replacement-system choices, not universal fixes for an existing unit.
