In a Violent Nature is a 2024 Canadian experimental slasher written and directed by Chris Nash. It follows Johnny, an undead killer resurrected after a locket is removed from a collapsed fire-tower burial site, and observes his trek through remote Ontario wilderness from an unusually persistent viewpoint. At 94 minutes, it is best approached as a formal experiment in slasher pacing and perspective rather than a conventional, rapid-cut chase movie.

A group of people disturbs a collapsed fire-tower burial site and removes a locket. That act brings Johnny, an undead figure, back to life. He begins moving through the surrounding wilderness to recover the locket from those who took it.

The basic setup resembles a familiar backwoods slasher, but the film’s subject is as much how a slasher is shown as what happens in its story. Instead of making the victims’ viewpoint the constant center of the film, Nash spends extended passages following Johnny’s movement through the landscape.
What makes the film different from a conventional slasher?
Johnny’s viewpoint changes the pace
Traditional slashers often rely on quick cutting, reaction shots and suspense built around a threatened victim. In a Violent Nature deliberately withholds much of that familiar rhythm. The camera observes the killer at length as he walks, pauses and crosses the Ontario wilderness. The result is slower, more patient and more observational than a standard chase structure.

The landscape becomes part of the spectacle
The remote setting is not merely a backdrop. Long stretches of movement make the woods, trails and empty spaces feel like the film’s central environment. This approach turns an otherwise routine pursuit into an experiment in duration and attention.
Gore and spectacle take priority over exposition
The film is designed around physical spectacle and the presence of its undead killer, not extensive conventional plot explanation or character-focused exposition. Viewers looking for a tightly plotted mystery may find that balance unusual; viewers interested in slasher mechanics, atmosphere and set-piece impact are more likely to appreciate it.

Chris Nash’s stated goal
Nash told TIME: “We wanted to do something new, something we could wow audiences with-or at least give them a spectacle they hadn’t seen before.” That aim explains the film’s revisionist relationship to familiar genre conventions: it uses the recognizable shape of a backwoods slasher while changing the camera’s allegiance and the amount of time spent simply watching the killer move.

It may be a poor fit if you expect a conventional victim-led thriller with constant cutting, extensive backstory or rapid plot progression. The same long observations that make the film distinctive can feel deliberately restrained compared with a standard slasher.
- Choose it for: experimental horror, revisionist slashers, wilderness atmosphere and spectacle-driven set pieces.
- Know before watching: the film spends substantial time observing Johnny’s movement rather than rushing from one victim’s reaction to the next.
Runtime, language and release dates
- Shudder lists the film as an English-language feature running 94 minutes.
- The British Board of Film Classification records a UK runtime of 93 minutes 58 seconds.
- The US theatrical release was 31 May 2024.
- The UK release date recorded by the BBFC is 12 July 2024.
The small difference between the two runtimes reflects the listings used by each service and classification record, not a different premise or film.
