The shutdown ended Netflix’s most prominent reported attempt to build a large-budget AAA production internally and was followed by the departure of three high-profile hires: former Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, Halo-associated creative leader Joseph Staten and Sony Santa Monica art director Rafael Grassetti.
That is a significant retreat from one form of games investment, but it is not evidence that Netflix abandoned games altogether. The company retained other studios and continued recruiting senior developers after Team Blue closed.
What Team Blue was
Team Blue was a Netflix-owned internal studio in the Los Angeles area, founded in 2022 to pursue a much larger production than the smaller mobile and catalog-oriented games that defined much of Netflix’s early games strategy. GamesBeat reported the studio’s creation, closure and staffing, citing reporting from Game File: GamesBeat’s report on Team Blue.
“AAA” is an industry shorthand for a typically expensive, heavily staffed production with high commercial and technical ambitions. It is not a formal legal category, and Netflix did not publicly document every aspect of Team Blue’s structure or budget. The useful distinction is that Team Blue was designed as a prestige, large-scale internal bet rather than simply another small team making phone games.

When the studio closed
- 2021: Netflix acquired Night School Studio as part of its expansion into games.
- 2022: Netflix founded Team Blue in Los Angeles.
- 2023–2024: The company recruited senior developers from Blizzard, Bungie/Microsoft and Sony Santa Monica-related backgrounds.
- October 22, 2024: Reports emerged that Netflix had shut Team Blue.
- 2025: Netflix continued reshaping its wider games organization, including hiring Avowed game director Carrie Patel at Night School Studio.
The closure date and the studio’s reported history come from GamesBeat. Patel’s later move and Netflix’s continuing games operation were reported by Game Developer.
The developers Netflix recruited
| Developer | Team Blue role | Relevant background |
|---|---|---|
| Chacko Sonny | Studio lead | Executive producer associated with Overwatch |
| Joseph Staten | Creative director | Known for creative leadership associated with Halo |
| Rafael Grassetti | Art director | Former art director at Sony Santa Monica, the studio behind God of War |
GamesBeat reported that all three left in connection with the shutdown. Their recruitment signaled the level of experience Netflix wanted around its first major internal AAA-style project. It does not establish that any one of them worked on a particular previously released game beyond the roles described above, nor does it verify what they did after Team Blue.
What game was Team Blue making?
The safest description is an unannounced, big-budget, multi-device project. GamesBeat also relayed reporting that characterized it as a PC game; other coverage described a third-person action RPG. Those descriptions should not be treated as a complete or officially confirmed design brief.

- No public title, trailer or release date was established.
- The project was reportedly in development when the studio closed.
- There is no verified public account of its plot, mechanics, budget or production milestone.
- The project’s final status is unknown: the available reporting does not establish whether it was canceled outright, transferred to another team or abandoned.
Because Team Blue closed before shipping a game, Netflix’s AAA experiment ended during development rather than after a public commercial launch.

The closure occurred during a leadership and strategy transition. Mike Verdu, who had led Netflix’s games initiative, moved into a different role, while Alain Tascan became president of games. Reporting at the time also described Netflix leadership emphasizing a mobile-first direction and shorter, more accessible “snackable” experiences.
Reports indicated layoffs elsewhere in Netflix’s games division, but the number and scope of those cuts were not publicly established in the available coverage. Night School had also experienced layoffs before Patel joined in 2025, according to Game Developer.

Team Blue therefore represented a tension inside the portfolio: a costly, long-horizon internal AAA production on one side, and mobile, catalog, acquired-studio and partnership-led approaches on the other. The evidence supports a strategic redirection, not a single proven cause for the closure.

Team Blue was Netflix’s only reported internal AAA studio, not its only game studio. Netflix continued to operate or own Night School, Boss Fight, Next Games, Spry Fox and a Helsinki-based studio, among other teams, according to GamesBeat.
The company also continued to recruit experienced developers after the shutdown. Patel’s 2025 move to Night School is a concrete example of ongoing investment in development talent, even as Netflix’s games president worked to redefine the organization around distribution, experimentation and Netflix-owned intellectual property.
Rank #4
The more defensible interpretation is that Netflix reduced or redirected its highest-risk internal development ambitions while keeping a broader games portfolio. Future large-scale projects could still be pursued through partners or different internal structures; the Team Blue closure does not prove that Netflix will never publish a AAA game.
What remains unknown
- Netflix’s official reason for closing Team Blue.
- The exact number of employees affected.
- The project’s formal cancellation or continuation status.
- Whether technology, concepts or staff moved to another Netflix team.
- Whether Netflix plans another internally developed AAA project.
Neither the closure’s precise cause nor those downstream decisions were confirmed by the sources available for this report. Claims that the project was over budget, failed a milestone, or was ended because of weak subscriber engagement remain speculation. The same applies to treating the leadership change as the sole cause.
What the shutdown means
Netflix’s Team Blue decision ended a high-profile internal AAA bet before it produced a public game. It also showed the risk of trying to build a large, expensive studio while the company was still defining what Netflix Games should be.
For now, the evidence points to a narrower and more selective strategy: retain acquired and smaller teams, use Netflix’s distribution reach and intellectual property, experiment with formats that fit the service, and continue hiring selectively. That is a retreat from Team Blue’s model—not a confirmed retreat from games as a whole.
