If Paramount+ works when your VPN is disconnected but fails when it is enabled, Paramount’s VPN or proxy detection is the leading explanation. Paramount’s own guidance is to disable VPNs, proxies and similar routing services, then return network settings to automatic. Its U.S. terms also restrict concealing your location or bypassing territory limits with a VPN.
Start with the VPN-off test below. If playback still fails without the VPN, treat this as a normal app, device, account, network or service-status problem rather than assuming a VPN is responsible.
Identify the failure before changing anything

Paramount explains the VPN/proxy warning in its support article. It says the service cannot determine whether a VPN is being used for a legitimate purpose, so traffic can be blocked even when your intent is privacy or security.
9 fixes, in the safest order
1. Turn off the VPN and test directly
Disconnect the VPN completely, force-close Paramount+, reopen it and retry the same title. Closing only a browser extension may leave another tunnel active through a desktop or mobile VPN app, router, work or school profile, operating-system proxy, Smart DNS service or privacy extension.

If the warning disappears and playback starts, you have confirmed a VPN-related failure. Paramount’s recommended remedy is to leave the VPN or proxy disabled.
2. Restore automatic network and proxy settings
A leftover proxy can keep routing traffic after a VPN app is closed. The labels differ by operating system, but these approximate paths expose the relevant controls:
- Windows: Settings → Network & internet → Proxy → turn off a manually configured proxy.
- macOS: System Settings → Network → your connection → Details → Proxies.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → Wi-Fi → connected network → Configure Proxy → Off; also check VPN settings and installed profiles.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → VPN; then the Wi-Fi network’s Proxy setting → None.
- TVs and streaming sticks: inspect the router, DNS service or network profile. The television may have no VPN app while the router sends all traffic through one.
Paramount specifically recommends automatic network settings in the same official guidance.
3. Restart the complete connection chain
- Force-close Paramount+.
- Disconnect the VPN.
- Restart the phone, computer or streaming device.
- Reboot the router or modem.
- Open Paramount+ and test again.
This clears stale app sessions and network routes. Restarting only the app will not remove a VPN configured on the router. Paramount’s broader troubleshooting advice covers refreshing browsers, force-quitting apps and restarting devices here.

4. Clear Paramount+ cookies, cache and site data
For browser playback, sign out, clear Paramount+ cookies and cached files, close the browser, reopen it and sign in again. On a phone or TV app, use the platform’s clear-cache command where available, or reinstall the app if that is the only supported option.
Do this with the VPN disconnected. Clearing data can fix a stale session or location token, but it cannot make a blocked VPN IP acceptable.
5. Check location permissions and your ZIP code
“Can’t find my location” is not identical to a VPN warning. Paramount’s location-error guidance says to share location through the browser or device and enter the ZIP code accurately: see its instructions.
- Allow location access for Paramount+ when prompted.
- Enable device location services where required.
- Confirm the account ZIP code.
- Turn off the VPN before checking permission again.
- Use a private browser window only as a diagnostic comparison.
GPS or browser geolocation does not guarantee that Paramount will accept a VPN address; IP and device signals can still conflict.

6. Update the app, browser and device
- Install the newest Paramount+ app version.
- Update the TV, phone, streaming stick or computer operating system.
- Update your browser if watching on the web.
- Restart the device.
- Retest without the VPN.
Supported devices and operating systems can change. Paramount directs subscribers to its Help Center for current requirements rather than promising support for every older model; its terms note that support may be revised over time.
7. Test another browser, device or network
Change one variable at a time:

This is especially important for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, smart TVs and consoles, where a router-level VPN can affect the device invisibly.
8. Check Paramount+ status and known issues
Check the official Paramount+ status page and its known-issues article before changing providers.
- Failure with and without the VPN points toward an outage, account, app, device or network problem.
- One failing title may have title-specific rights or playback trouble.
- Live sports and local CBS can require separate location or subscription checks.
- Only VPN traffic failing makes the VPN IP or route the leading suspect.
9. Contact the right support team—or stop using the VPN for Paramount+

- Exact error text and a screenshot if useful.
- Device, operating system, app or browser.
- Subscription country and current location.
- Whether playback works with the VPN disconnected.
- Whether the VPN is on the device, router or a work/school profile.
- Approximate start time.
If you never installed a VPN, ask your ISP whether its network uses a proxy or traffic-routing service; Paramount identifies that as a possibility. If the subscription was purchased through an app store, telecom company or another partner, that seller may need to resolve billing or activation issues.
You can also ask your VPN provider whether it currently supports Paramount+ in your country. Proton VPN publishes a Paramount+-specific guide and warns that country, app-store and regional-rights restrictions apply: Proton’s guide. That is provider guidance, not a Paramount guarantee.

Traveling abroad
Availability and catalogs depend on territory. Paramount’s U.S. terms say access may not be available outside the territory where the subscription was obtained and prohibit using a VPN to conceal location or bypass geographic, pricing or content restrictions: read the terms. Do not treat a server change as an endorsed travel solution.
The app fails but the website works
Update or force-close the app, clear its cache, restart the device and test the same account in a supported browser with the VPN off. Success in the browser points toward an app or device issue; failure everywhere points toward account, network, regional or service-side trouble.

The website fails but the app works
Clear Paramount+ site data, disable browser extensions, update the browser and retry in a normal window. Private browsing can isolate an extension or stale cookie, but it is not a VPN workaround.
Only live sports or local CBS fails
Check your plan, ZIP code, location permission and the event’s regional rights. A general movie or series playing normally does not prove that live programming has the same availability.
What changing VPN providers can—and cannot—do
A different provider may have an address that is not currently classified as a VPN, but Paramount can block associated ranges later. Changing servers, changing DNS, reinstalling the app or using incognito mode therefore cannot guarantee access and may conflict with Paramount’s published policy. Free VPNs are particularly uncertain for streaming because shared, congested or unstable addresses are more likely to fail; that is a general selection consideration, not a tested Paramount result.
If privacy and network security are your reason for using a VPN, compare providers on transparent pricing, refund period, simultaneous-device limit, router support and customer service—not on a promise that Paramount+ will always work. Proton’s current product details are at its pricing page; NordVPN lists its dynamic introductory and renewal terms at its pricing page. These commercial terms can change, and neither overrides Paramount’s rules.

When to stop troubleshooting
- Paramount+ works immediately with the VPN disconnected: keep the VPN off for this service or accept that compatibility is unreliable.
- The service fails on every device and network: contact Paramount before buying another VPN.
- An official status page shows an outage: wait for service restoration rather than changing settings repeatedly.
- Your ISP confirms a proxy or unusual routing you did not configure: ask the ISP to correct it.
- A device or operating system is no longer supported: use a supported browser or device.
