The federal criminal complaint alleged that he caused an explosive or incendiary device to be placed on an aircraft. Choi was released on a $50,000 bond; the materials available here do not establish the case’s final disposition.
Who is Alex Choi?
Alex Choi is the public name of Suk Min Choi, a YouTube creator known for automotive and stunt-oriented videos. The case concerns his alleged role as the director of a production titled “Destroying a Lamborghini With Fireworks.” The descriptions of the video in this article come from the federal complaint and agency announcements; the original footage may no longer be publicly available.
What did prosecutors say happened?
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, the video was made in June 2023 at or near the El Mirage Dry Lakebed in San Bernardino County. The complaint allegedly described two women in a helicopter flying near the ground and repeatedly shooting fireworks at a Lamborghini during the production. Prosecutors also said the filming took place without required filming permits.
The government’s account is an allegation, not a court finding. A criminal complaint starts a case and does not establish guilt.

What federal charge did Choi face?
The complaint charged Choi with causing the placement of an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft. The Department of Justice said the offense carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison if a defendant were convicted. The stated maximum is not a prediction of the sentence Choi would receive, and the charge remained unproven unless established in court.

Why did the aircraft issue matter?
The central allegation was not simply that fireworks were used in a video. Prosecutors framed the conduct under a federal law addressing the placement of an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft. The agencies also emphasized that the helicopter was allegedly flying near the ground. Those aircraft-safety allegations are legally distinct from the separate question of whether the production had the filming permissions required for the location or activity.
