There is no single best Audible replacement. Choose Libby for free library borrowing, Google Play Books for occasional à-la-carte purchases, Kobo for a non-Amazon credit-style service, Everand (formerly Scribd) for backlist-heavy subscription listening, Chirp for sales, and Libro.fm for audiobook purchases that support independent bookstores.
This is a historical comparison of services available in 2022, with present-day caveats. The often-cited comparison from Digital Trends was updated April 25, 2023, so its prices are labeled historical rather than current: Digital Trends’ 2022 audiobook-app comparison.
First, decide what “Audible alternative” means
These services solve different problems. A library app lends a title temporarily; a subscription may stream or unlock titles only while you pay; a credit membership generally lets you keep redeemed books in your account; an à-la-carte store sells individual books; and a deal site waits for a publisher discount. A downloadable file may still be protected by digital rights management (DRM), so “downloaded” does not automatically mean portable ownership.
| Model | What you receive | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Library borrowing | Free loans through a participating library | Holds, loan deadlines, and local catalog limits |
| Subscription access | Access to a rotating or restricted catalog while subscribed | Popular or new titles may be capped or unavailable |
| Monthly-credit membership | Credits or unlocks for selected books, usually retained in the account | Account lock-in and regional title rights |
| À-la-carte purchase | One audiobook purchased when needed | No subscription discount or unlimited catalog |
| Discount storefront | Titles bought during time-limited sales | The book you want may not be discounted |
| Public-domain access | Free recordings of works whose copyrights have expired | Few current bestsellers and variable narration |
| DRM-free purchase | A file usable beyond one app, when the title is offered that way | Availability and format vary by title |
Best alternatives by priority
| Priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free current borrowing | Libby | Connects a library card to your library’s ebook and audiobook collection. |
| Free borrowing plus other media | Hoopla | Participating libraries may offer audiobooks, ebooks, comics, music, television, and films. |
| Buy one book occasionally | Google Play Books or Apple Books | No audiobook membership is required. |
| Audible-like credit model | Kobo or Libro.fm | Commercial purchasing without Amazon; Kobo also integrates with Kobo devices, while Libro.fm emphasizes independent bookstores. |
| Individual bargains | Chirp | Sales-focused purchasing with no required monthly subscription. |
| Large subscription backlist | Everand | Combines audiobooks with ebooks and other digital media, subject to access restrictions. |
| Public-domain classics | LibriVox | Free volunteer-read recordings. |

Detailed service guide
Libby: best free Audible alternative
Libby is OverDrive’s free library app. Sign in with a participating library card, search that library’s digital collection, place holds, and borrow available audiobooks for offline listening. Loan periods and simultaneous checkouts are set by the library. You do not keep a loan after it expires, and another library may have a completely different catalog.
Libby is the strongest first stop for a price-sensitive listener, but it is not on-demand unlimited listening. A hold can be weeks long, and a missing title may reflect local licensing rather than overall unavailability.
Hoopla: immediate library access where supported
Hoopla is funded through participating libraries and can include audiobooks alongside ebooks, comics, music, television, and films. The 2022 comparison cited more than 800,000 combined items and a historical limit of up to 30 monthly checkouts, but both catalog and limits are library-specific. Borrowed items expire and are removed or disabled when the loan ends.
Hoopla can complement Libby when a title is available for immediate checkout, but it offers no purchase option or permanent ownership.
Google Play Books: simplest à-la-carte buying
The Google Play Books app is free to install and requires no audiobook subscription. You preview and buy individual titles, then use chapter navigation, playback-speed controls, a sleep timer, progress synchronization, and offline listening. The 2022 coverage observed that many titles were often below Audible’s prices; that was a historical observation, not a universal current rule.

This is a good fit for someone who listens to only a few books a year or already uses Google services. It has no monthly-credit system and no single unlimited audiobook catalog. A store purchase can remain account-bound or DRM-protected even when it is available offline.
Kobo and Kobo Plus: non-Amazon credit and device ecosystem
Kobo offered a monthly-credit plan in the 2022 comparison, with a reported U.S. price of $10 per month after a 30-day trial and introductory audiobook. Kobo also promoted Kobo Originals and integration with Kobo e-readers and apps. The current U.S. Kobo Plus page shows title-level “free with Kobo Plus” labels and subscription access to ebooks and audiobooks, but it does not expose one universal plan price in the retrieved page; check the live checkout for your region.
Regional rights mean a book listed in another country may not be sold or included in yours. Subscription access is not the same as permanent purchase, and current post-cancellation and credit terms should be checked before joining.

Everand is the current brand for Scribd’s subscription service. The 2022 comparison described more than one million combined audiobooks, ebooks, magazines, and sheet music, with plans from $10 per month. That combined figure is not an audiobook-only catalog count.
The crucial caveat is access control: the earlier “Unlimited” model could restrict several new or popular releases during a billing cycle. Therefore, do not read “unlimited” as unlimited access to every audiobook. Everand is strongest for backlist-heavy listeners who also use ebooks and other media.

Chirp: bargain buying without a membership
Chirp is a deal-oriented audiobook storefront. You buy selected titles when they are discounted, with no required monthly subscription. It is useful for patient readers who want to pay once and avoid credits. A specific bestseller may never be discounted, and the cited material does not establish that every Chirp title is DRM-free, so check the title’s current terms.
Libro.fm: independent-bookstore-focused purchasing
Libro.fm combines individual audiobook sales with a membership option associated with independent bookstores. It is the clearest choice for readers who want their purchases to support a local or independent bookseller while avoiding Amazon.
Membership pricing, credit-expiration rules, file formats, and download restrictions were not reliably exposed in the available official material. Verify those terms, as well as whether a particular title is DRM-free, before purchase. Libro.fm may be more ethical for your priorities without being cheaper for every book.
Downpour: rentals and an alternative retail store
Downpour was described in the 2022 comparison as a store with more than 80,000 audiobook titles, offline listening, variable speed, bookmarks, notes, and rentals. Historical rental periods were 30–60 days, with savings claimed up to 70% versus purchase prices. A rental is temporary access, not ownership.
Reports of Android search, display, and crash problems in that review are historical observations and should not be treated as current defects without fresh testing.

LibriVox: genuinely free classics
LibriVox offers volunteer recordings of public-domain works such as classic literature, biographies, and historical texts. The 2022 comparison cited more than 50,000 audiobooks. Narration quality varies by reader, and current bestsellers are generally outside the public domain, so LibriVox is a supplement rather than a replacement for a commercial catalog.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose by listening pattern
If you listen to only a few books a year
Start with Libby or Hoopla. Buy only unavailable titles through Google Play Books, Apple Books, or an occasional Chirp sale. A recurring membership can cost more than the books you actually finish.
If you finish about one premium book a month
Compare a credit plan such as Kobo or Libro.fm with the individual price of each title. Credits can be good value for expensive new releases, while à-la-carte buying wins when your choices are routinely inexpensive.
If you finish several books a month
Test whether Everand’s available catalog matches your genres before relying on its subscription. Its broad media library can be economical for backlist listening, but popular-title restrictions may force separate purchases.
If you need new releases immediately
Commercial stores usually provide the most predictable route, subject to territory and publisher rights. Library services can involve holds, and subscription catalogs may delay or restrict popular releases.

If portability matters more than app convenience
Ask three separate questions before buying: can you download a file, is it DRM-free, and will it play without account authentication? A downloaded, DRM-protected audiobook may stop working outside the vendor’s app or after an account change. Libro.fm and selected Downpour titles may better suit portability goals, but verify each title’s format and terms.
If you want to avoid Amazon
Kobo, Libro.fm, Chirp, Google Play Books, Libby, Hoopla, and LibriVox provide different non-Amazon paths. Choose among them based on whether you value ownership, bookstore support, free borrowing, or discounts.
Practical limits to check before signing up
- Library participation: Libby and Hoopla work only where your library licenses them.
- Holds and loan periods: Free does not mean immediate, and a loan expires.
- Popular-title caps: Everand’s historical restrictions show why “unlimited” needs a qualification.
- Regional rights: Kobo and other stores can show different books and prices by country.
- Ownership language: “Purchased,” “redeemed,” “downloaded,” and “DRM-free” describe different rights.
- Device features: Confirm iOS, Android, web, offline, speed, sleep-timer, bookmark, progress-sync, CarPlay, Android Auto, and e-reader support separately; a feature on one platform may not exist on another.
A practical multi-service setup
Many listeners get better value by combining services instead of replacing Audible with one app: use Libby for free borrowing, Hoopla when your library offers an immediate checkout, Chirp for sales, and Google Play Books, Kobo, or Libro.fm for titles worth buying. This separates temporary access from permanent purchases and reduces the temptation to pay a subscription for books you could borrow or buy individually.
Bottom line
For most U.S. readers, begin with Libby. Add Hoopla if your library supports it. Choose Google Play Books for occasional purchases, Kobo or Libro.fm for a paid non-Amazon alternative, Everand for backlist-heavy subscription listening, and Chirp for discounts. None reproduces Audible’s exact combination of credits, exclusives, catalog, and account rules; the right choice is the one whose access model matches how—and how often—you listen.
