Standard with ads rose from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, Standard from $15.49 to $17.99, and Premium from $22.99 to $24.99. The reported markets were the United States, Canada, Portugal and Argentina—not every country worldwide.
Those were the 2025 announcement prices, not necessarily today’s bill. Netflix documentation currently lists U.S.-dollar prices of $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard and $26.99 for Premium. Check your account because country, taxes, billing partners, promotions and later price changes can alter the amount charged.

What Netflix announced on January 21, 2025
The announcement covered the three plans in the relevant U.S. lineup: Standard with ads, Standard and Premium. Netflix had already discontinued Basic in the United States, so “all three plans” did not mean every historical tier or every customer worldwide. The announcement was reported alongside Netflix’s fourth-quarter 2024 results, when the company added 18.9 million paid memberships and finished the quarter with more than 300 million globally.
Contemporaneous coverage identified the United States, Canada, Portugal and Argentina as affected markets. Plan names, currencies and local prices differ by country, so U.S. dollar figures should not be applied automatically elsewhere. See Netflix’s country and payment guidance at Netflix Help.

Netflix’s current plan documentation confirms these core differences and says Basic has been discontinued: Netflix plan and pricing information. The ad tier is normally the least expensive, but advertisements interrupt viewing and licensing restrictions mean it is not identical to an ad-free catalog. Premium is most useful when several people watch at once and the household has compatible 4K/HDR equipment and content; a single viewer on a phone or laptop may gain little from it.

When did a subscriber’s bill change?
January 21, 2025 was the announcement date, not a universal charge date. Netflix says it emails members about a price change approximately one month before the billing date on which the higher price takes effect. Your renewal date therefore determined when the new amount appeared.

- Direct-billed customers should check the Netflix email, membership page and billing history.
- Customers billed through a mobile carrier, broadband provider or pay-TV bundle may receive notice from that partner and see different taxes, credits or line-item descriptions.
- Promotional, legacy and bundled accounts may not map neatly to the advertised plans.

Why Netflix said it raised prices
Netflix said it periodically adjusts pricing as it invests in programming and improves the service. Its investor materials describe pricing as part of monetization, with revenue supporting content and product investment. The company was also developing its advertising business and seeking higher revenue per member. Those statements explain Netflix’s position; they do not independently prove that any particular price change produced better programming or service for an individual subscriber. Which option makes sense for your household?
Keep the current plan
Staying avoids disruption and preserves the features you already use. Compare the new monthly charge with the number of months you actually watch rather than treating the subscription as an annual commitment.

Choose Standard with ads
This is the lower-cost choice for viewers who accept commercial breaks, need only 1080p and can live with occasional title restrictions. Verify that the programs you watch are available on the ad-supported catalog.
Downgrade to Standard
Standard keeps viewing ad-free at 1080p with two simultaneous devices. It is a practical middle ground for one or two regular viewers who do not need Premium’s 4K, four-device limit or larger download allowance.
Keep or choose Premium
Premium’s price is easier to justify for a household that actively uses four streams, owns suitable 4K/HDR equipment, wants spatial audio or needs six download devices. Its possible extra-member slots can affect the household calculation, but they are not unrestricted password sharing.

Cancel and return later
Occasional viewers can cancel between releases and resubscribe when there is enough to watch. Check the exact cancellation effective date and any pending billing before assuming an immediate saving.
Compare a bundle or extra-member arrangement
An eligible extra-member option may be preferable to maintaining a separate account for someone outside the household. Alternatively, compare a mobile, broadband or pay-TV bundle—but calculate the full bundle price, taxes and services you would otherwise buy. How to verify your own price before changing anything
- Open Netflix and go to Account, then review Membership and Billing Details.
- Check the latest Netflix price-change email and your billing history for the effective date.
- Identify whether Netflix or a partner (such as a carrier or pay-TV provider) collects the payment.
- Compare the displayed plan features with your household’s actual devices, simultaneous viewing and 4K needs.
- Confirm the change screen’s effective date and final amount before submitting a downgrade, upgrade or cancellation.
Because taxes, currency conversion, promotions and partner terms vary, the amount shown in your account is more reliable than a historical headline price.
