Not every UK adult has been locked out of Pornhub. Aylo, Pornhub’s owner, stopped new UK users accessing Pornhub, YouPorn and RedTube on 2 February 2026. Existing UK users who had already verified their age may keep access, and Aylo says eligible adult users on iOS began regaining access on 5 May after Apple’s UK age-confirmation process. Access therefore depends on account history, verification route, device and current platform controls—not a universal nationwide internet block.
What actually changed
The change followed the UK Online Safety Act’s age-assurance duties for pornography services. From 25 July 2025, services with relevant links to the UK had to use “highly effective” methods to prevent under-18s from normally encountering pornographic content. Ofcom says a simple tick-box declaration is not enough. The duties apply even when a provider is based outside the UK.
Aylo described its February decision as a company restriction on new UK users, rather than an announcement that the UK government had technically blocked every connection to Pornhub. Ofcom has powers to seek sanctions against providers and, in serious cases, pursue restrictions involving third parties such as internet providers, but that power is not evidence of a current universal ISP-level block. Who may still get in?
Existing verified accounts
Aylo said UK users who had verified their age before the February restriction would retain access through their existing accounts. That does not guarantee access indefinitely: the account must remain in good standing and pass the site’s current checks.
New UK users
Aylo said new UK users could no longer access its three named platforms from 2 February 2026. A newly created account, or an account with no prior verification history, should not be assumed to work.
Eligible iPhone and iPad users
On 5 May, Aylo said it began restoring access for eligible adult UK users on iOS who had completed Apple’s UK age-confirmation process. “Eligible” matters: device model, operating-system version, Apple account region, confirmation status and Aylo’s current rollout can all affect the result.

Other devices
The restoration announcement specifically describes iOS users. It does not establish equivalent access for Android phones, desktop browsers, smart televisions or other platforms.

Aylo says the UK framework creates privacy and security risks, pushes users toward smaller or less regulated services, and encourages VPN use. It argues that a device-level age signal could protect age information without repeatedly sending identifying details to individual websites. Those are Aylo’s policy arguments and interpretation of its data, not an independent finding that the law has failed.
Ofcom’s position is that pornography services must deploy highly effective, secure age assurance and that it will investigate providers that appear not to comply. Ofcom’s enforcement programme prioritises services that said they would introduce checks but appeared not to have them. An investigation or confirmation decision is not, by itself, a finding that Pornhub has broken the law. Ofcom’s pornography hub is at ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/pornography.

What age checks can involve
Aylo historically listed email-based age estimation, payment-card checks, mobile-network checks, open banking and Google Wallet. Availability can change, so old instructions should not be treated as a current menu. Age estimation is not automatically anonymous: a provider may process signals, identity information or account data, depending on the method and its contracts.
Before submitting anything, check which company performs the check, what information is sent to Pornhub, retention and deletion periods, third-party processors, breach procedures and whether the result is an age confirmation rather than an identity record. Ofcom requires secure, highly effective methods, while the government says services must protect personal data and can face penalties for misuse. See the government’s explanation of the changes.
Could a VPN still work?
A VPN can make a connection appear to originate outside the UK, which may defeat a basic IP-location rule. It cannot be treated as a guaranteed route around Pornhub’s controls. A service can also examine account history, device and browser signals, payment details, SIM or network information and known VPN addresses. Popular VPN endpoints may be blocked or overloaded.

A VPN does not make a user anonymous, remove applicable legal obligations or override a site’s terms. Ofcom reported increased VPN use after age assurance began, but said the available evidence does not show that children trying to bypass checks caused that increase. Its report is available as a PDF.
The available evidence does not establish a new general UK ban on owning or using VPNs. Separate questions remain: whether conduct breaches Pornhub’s terms, whether information supplied during verification is truthful, and whether the material accessed is lawful. Those are not the same question as whether a VPN application is legal.

- Data linkage: an age-check provider could receive identity, financial or network information, while the website may receive a pass/fail result—or more, depending on the design.
- Retention: records can create a link between a person and adult-content use if deletion rules are unclear.
- Third parties: banks, mobile operators, wallet providers and specialist verification companies may process parts of the transaction.
- Security: breaches, weak authentication or fraudulent verification pages can expose sensitive information.
- Device systems: a device-level signal may reduce disclosure to a website, but eligibility and the operating system’s own privacy terms still matter.
Never upload identity documents to an unofficial page, install an unknown extension or sideload an app advertised as an “unlock.” Those are common ways to turn an access problem into an identity-theft or malware problem.

A practical way to diagnose an access message
- Check whether the account existed and had completed age verification before 2 February 2026.
- Read the current notice on Pornhub rather than relying on a 2025 guide listing old methods.
- If using an iPhone or iPad, check iOS, Apple account region and whether Apple’s UK age-confirmation status is complete.
- On another device, do not assume that the iOS restoration applies.
- Distinguish an age-check failure, account restriction, geolocation error or temporary outage from a nationwide block.
- For privacy questions, review the named verification provider’s current policy before submitting data.
What this means for the wider internet
The policy is a trade-off: the UK wants stronger barriers against children encountering pornography, while adults and providers are concerned about privacy, data security, migration to less regulated sites and the reliability of age checks. Ofcom’s continuing investigations show that enforcement is still developing. The practical result is a fragmented experience in which two UK adults can see different outcomes because their accounts, devices or verification histories differ.

Is Pornhub completely banned in the UK?
No. The evidence supports a platform restriction on new UK users, not a universal permanent block on every UK internet connection. Existing verified users and some eligible age-confirmed iOS users may still have access.
Can I use a VPN to access Pornhub?
