Fan comparisons highlighted blurred or reshaped faces, unstable textures, altered colors and framing changes. The dispute was not simply about whether artificial intelligence can be used on old video: it was about whether this particular treatment preserved the look of episodes that audiences know frame by frame.
What happened to SBT’s Chaves images?
SBT used AI-based image processing while preparing episodes of Chaves and Chapolin for their return. The criticism became especially visible in early January 2025, when the Fórum Chaves fan community circulated comparisons and viewers discussed apparent anomalies in particular scenes. Folha reported the renewed complaints on January 2, 2025, after criticism appeared online the previous day (Folha).
Reports described faces that looked blurred or unnaturally reshaped, surfaces whose texture seemed to crawl between frames, warped objects, shifts in color and contrast, and presentations that appeared stretched or cropped for wider screens. Those examples demonstrate what viewers saw; they do not, by themselves, identify which processing stage caused each defect.
The programs involved
The controversy covered both Chaves and Chapolin, which were part of the same return and enhancement effort. Canaltech published additional examples of what it called bizarre-looking AI-optimized images (Canaltech).

What fans said they were seeing
- Faces and bodies: eyes, mouths, fingers or facial contours could appear softened, shifted or inconsistently shaped.
- Surface texture: skin, hair, clothing, walls, sand and water sometimes looked plastic, smeared or unstable.
- Edges and objects: signs, props and straight lines could bend, acquire halos or change shape from one frame to the next.
- Color and contrast: costumes, skin tones and backgrounds appeared different from familiar versions.
- Composition: a wider presentation could crop the original 4:3 frame or stretch it, an issue separate from AI enhancement even when both appeared in the same broadcast.
Fórum Chaves’s posted comparisons were important evidence of the audience reaction, but they were not controlled laboratory tests. Brightness, compression, display settings, frame selection and the generation of the comparison source can all affect how a difference appears. A screenshot also cannot prove whether an artifact originated in the AI pass, an old tape, an earlier transfer or later broadcast compression.
What SBT said the process was meant to do
SBT said the objective was to improve viewing quality while correcting defects associated with aging analog videotape. Its explanation referred to noise, phase rotation and other forms of signal instability. The broadcaster also said the intention was to preserve the episodes’ original characteristics, rather than change their content or identity (Canaltech; Terra).
Later Folha coverage quoted SBT technology executive Alfonso Aurin as saying the broadcaster accepted criticism from dedicated fans while discussing AI’s arrival in television post-production (Folha). Terra and Tecmundo reported that SBT intended to continue using the technology despite the complaints (Tecmundo).

That is a statement of purpose, not independent confirmation that every processed scene achieved it. The public record documents SBT’s rationale and the visible audience response, but not the broadcaster’s internal quality-control results.
“Remastering” can mean several different operations
Calling an episode “AI-remastered” does not identify a single technical procedure. The terms below describe different choices, and the available reporting does not establish that SBT used all of them.

A complete archival restoration would normally involve documented source recovery, correction and review. The reports do not establish whether SBT performed that kind of restoration, an enhancement pass, or a combination of processes, so “AI restoration” should be read as a broad description rather than a published workflow specification.

Why old videotape is difficult to improve
Chaves was produced for television using analog video. Copies and aging can leave noise, soft or smeared detail, color instability, tracking and phase problems, and generation loss when material has been duplicated. Quality may also vary between episodes, scenes and surviving source copies.
Processing can remove a genuine recording defect, but it cannot reliably recover detail that was never captured or has been lost. When information is missing, an enhancement system must estimate what belongs there. The result can look sharper while being less faithful to the original image.
Why artifacts flicker
Video is a sequence, not a stack of unrelated still photographs. A system that treats adjacent frames inconsistently can make facial features, hair, walls or clothing change shape or texture. This “texture crawling,” color drift and uneven processing are among the reasons temporal consistency and scene-by-scene human review matter.

Why the reaction was stronger than an ordinary picture-quality complaint
Brazilian viewers have lived with Chaves for decades. Fans can compare current broadcasts with older television recordings, DVDs, home videos and alternate versions, making subtle changes easier to spot. For many viewers, the soft, imperfect appearance is part of the programs’ identity, not merely a technical flaw.
That does not mean every viewer prefers an untreated master. Broadcasters have practical reasons to make archival material legible on modern televisions and streaming services. The disagreement is about the acceptable trade-off: a cleaner picture may be preferable if it removes tape damage, but unacceptable if it changes a familiar face, prop, expression or composition.

- the original source format, tape generation or output resolution;
- whether frames were processed individually or with a temporally aware method;
- whether generative reconstruction was used;
- how many episodes received the treatment or whether both programs used an identical pipeline;
- whether the original 4:3 composition was retained in every version;
- whether an untreated master remains available for broadcast or streaming;
- how extensively people reviewed the output or whether corrections followed the initial criticism.
Without those details, it is not possible to assign every visible anomaly to AI, call the result a documented full restoration, or generalize from a handful of scenes to the entire catalog.
How to judge an AI-enhanced archive responsibly
- Fidelity: faces, costumes, signs, props and set textures should remain recognizable and consistent.
- Temporal stability: features and textures should not flicker or change shape between adjacent frames.
- Source preservation: the original master should remain protected, with a less-processed alternative where feasible.
- Presentation: any 16:9 version should disclose whether it is pillarboxed, cropped, stretched or otherwise reframed.
- Human review: obvious anomalies should be checked scene by scene on both professional monitors and consumer televisions.
- Transparency: viewers should be told what was changed and what “remastered” means in that release.
The broader archive question
Later reporting placed the Chaves dispute in a wider discussion about AI entering television post-production (Folha). The central choice is not “technology or no technology.” It is whether a broadcaster can improve watchability without replacing uncertain historical detail with synthetic detail or altering the visual grammar audiences recognize.
The most defensible practice would preserve the archival source separately, document the intervention, review the result with human operators and, where rights and infrastructure allow, offer viewers a clearly labeled original or less-processed version alongside the enhanced one.
Bottom line
SBT’s use of AI on Chaves and Chapolin was a real, reported controversy. Fans’ objections centered on visible artifacts and questions of fidelity, not proof that every AI restoration is inherently wrong. SBT said it was correcting analog-video problems while preserving the episodes’ original characteristics; the disputed images led many viewers to conclude that the execution sometimes introduced new distortions. Until SBT publishes its workflow and quality-control details, the fairest conclusion is that the stated intention was restoration, while the success of the result remains scene- and episode-dependent.
