Amazon ended its U.S. Prime Invitee program on October 1, 2025, ending the official way for a Prime member to share shipping benefits with someone at another address. It did not end all Prime sharing: eligible people who live at the same primary residence can still share selected benefits through Amazon Family. People at different addresses can keep free Amazon accounts, but generally need their own qualifying membership to retain Prime benefits.
What Amazon ended—and what it did not
Prime Invitee let a paying Prime member extend at least free-shipping benefits to a person outside the member’s household. Amazon retired that program in the United States on October 1, 2025, according to The Associated Press.
The replacement is not a blanket ban on household sharing. Amazon Family lets a Prime member share selected benefits with a limited number of people who live at the same primary residential address. Amazon describes the arrangement at its Amazon Family overview. The change concerns the official benefit-sharing program; it is not evidence that every person who has ever signed in to another person’s account has had that account shut down. Amazon’s terms say Prime memberships and benefits are non-transferable, and Prime Video is licensed for personal, private use; see the Prime terms and Prime Video terms.
Who can still share through Amazon Family?
Amazon’s U.S. guidance describes an arrangement for one Prime member, one additional adult aged 18 or older, and up to four children. The adults must share the same primary residential address—the place considered home where they spend most of their time. Teen eligibility can depend on market, availability, and when the teen was added, so do not assume the same teen rules apply everywhere. See Amazon’s overview and its U.S. household guidance.

Amazon Family has no separate setup fee, and adults can keep separate Amazon logins. Selected benefits may include Prime delivery, Prime Video, Prime Reading, First Reads, certain deals and events, and eligible digital content through Family Library. The precise benefits depend on market, membership type, and content rights; Amazon’s benefit overview explains the current arrangement.
Separate logins do not mean there is no privacy trade-off. Payment methods or wallet details may be shared, and purchase notifications or limited payment information can be visible to another household member. Review the payment and content-sharing controls before accepting an invitation, especially when sharing with a roommate or adult relative.
What if you live at another address?
Parents, adult children, friends, and long-distance partners who live elsewhere generally cannot use Amazon Family simply because they are related or share expenses. If they want Prime-specific benefits, they can join Prime themselves; otherwise they can continue with a free Amazon account and use non-Prime shopping options.
The primary-residence test can also complicate circumstances such as a second home, campus housing, or a temporary work relocation. Amazon’s guidance uses the primary residential address as the criterion; it does not establish that maintaining another residence automatically qualifies. Check the applicable country’s current rules rather than relying on an exception that Amazon has not confirmed.

The rollout is not worldwide on one date. The U.S. date was October 1, 2025. An Amazon UK support page says Prime Invitee sharing ended there on June 30, 2025. Amazon’s rules and availability vary by country.
Do you have to buy Prime to keep your Amazon account?
No. The end of Prime Invitee means an outside-household user generally loses the Prime benefits they received through that program; it does not mean their ordinary Amazon shopping account is deleted or that Amazon requires them to subscribe. A paid membership is relevant only if they want Prime-only benefits at their own address.
Without Prime, a shopper can still buy from Amazon, use applicable free-shipping thresholds or other available shipping options, consolidate purchases, or shop elsewhere. Amazon’s Prime page lists the bundled benefits, including delivery, Prime Video, music, and Prime Day, but which ones matter is personal.
How to set up Amazon Family if you share an address
- Sign in to the Prime member’s Amazon account and open the Amazon Family or household-management area.
- Choose the option to create or manage Amazon Family, then invite the other adult using that adult’s own Amazon account.
- Confirm that the household meets the primary-address requirement and have the invited adult accept from the correct account.
- Review Family Library and other content-sharing settings, then decide carefully whether to share payment methods.
Amazon’s website and app labels can vary by country and change over time. Use Amazon’s current Create Your Amazon Family instructions and Amazon Family help page for the relevant marketplace.

Why an Amazon Family invitation or benefit may not work
- Address mismatch: Confirm both adults use the same primary residential address.
- Membership type: Prime Video-only subscriptions are not equivalent to full Prime for sharing. Amazon support says Prime Video-only members cannot share that subscription through Amazon Family; see Amazon’s support guidance.
- Student or young-adult membership: Prime Student and Prime for Young Adults can have different eligibility or sharing rules; Amazon support says Prime Student members may not share through the ordinary household arrangement. Check the terms for the specific membership.
- Invitation or existing household: Make sure the invitation was accepted by the intended account and check whether the invitee is already linked to another Amazon Family.
- Recent household change: Amazon says someone who leaves Amazon Family may have to wait 180 days before joining another one. Treat that as an Amazon Family rule, not a universal rule for every country or failed invitation.
- Benefit availability: Confirm that the particular benefit is shareable for your marketplace and membership type. Add-ons and premium video features can have their own limits.
Rather than handing over an account password, use the eligible household-sharing feature. A shared login can expose orders, saved addresses, payment methods, and account controls. Amazon Family keeps adult logins separate, though payment and notification settings still deserve review.
Is paying for a separate Prime membership worth it?
Estimate the value for the person who would actually pay, not the household as a whole. Compare likely shipping savings and benefits they will use with the current membership price shown at signup. The surfaced Amazon price signal of $14.99 monthly or $139 annually comes from an older Amazon page and should not be treated as a verified current offer; check Amazon’s live signup page before deciding.
- Prime may fit if frequent Amazon orders, faster delivery, Prime Video, reading, music, or deal access add up to more value than the membership cost.
- Skip it if you shop infrequently, can combine orders to meet free-shipping thresholds, mainly benefited from another person’s purchases, or only want a small amount of streaming content.
- Compare alternatives by use: Walmart+ is more relevant to Walmart and grocery shoppers, while Target Circle 360 is aimed at Target shoppers and same-day services. Neither reproduces Prime’s complete marketplace-and-media bundle. Check each service’s official page for current terms and price: Walmart+ and Target Circle 360.
If your main interest is video, compare streaming options separately rather than buying a full Prime membership just to replace household shipping access. Prime Video Ultra is a U.S. video add-on, not a substitute for Prime delivery or outside-household sharing. Can I share Prime with my parents in another state?
Not through Amazon Family’s same-primary-address arrangement. They can use free Amazon accounts or get their own qualifying memberships for Prime benefits.

Can roommates use Amazon Family?
They may qualify if they are eligible adults living at the same primary residential address, but should review shared-payment and purchase-notification settings first.
Can a spouse at a second home qualify?
Amazon’s stated criterion is the same primary residential address. The guidance does not establish that a second home qualifies automatically.
Can I share Prime Video without full Prime?
Amazon support says a Prime Video-only membership cannot be shared through Amazon Family. Video access and sharing can also depend on the subscription and content.
Can adult accounts see each other’s orders?
Amazon Family allows separate adult accounts, but payment information and purchase notifications may be shared or visible depending on settings.
