No—The Old Man will not have a Season 3. FX cancelled the Jeff Bridges drama after two seasons on December 17, 2024. Bridges’ comments about signing on for three seasons were made before that decision and do not represent a current Season 3 order.

What happened to The Old Man?

FX ended The Old Man after its second season. TVLine reported the cancellation on December 17, 2024, noting that the series had struggled to maintain momentum during the two-year gap between seasons while also reporting that FX was proud of the show.

The series starred Jeff Bridges as Dan Chase, a former intelligence operative, and was based on Thomas Perry’s novel. Bridges also executive produced the first season. FX’s official series page says he had recently completed production on Season 2 when that page was written.

Why did fans expect a third season?

Before FX cancelled the series, Bridges discussed the possibility of continuing. In an interview with TheWrap, he said:

“I’ve signed on for three, and I love working with the people and I’m excited about where the story is going, so I just kind of play it by ear. I haven’t figured that far in the future yet.”

That statement described Bridges’ contract and his enthusiasm at the time; it was not confirmation that FX had renewed the show. The cancellation came later.

Executive producer Jonathan E. Steinberg also spoke about a possible third-season direction before the cancellation. He said the relationship between Bridges’ character and Alia Shawkat’s character had only just begun and that he wanted to see them occupy the same space in the story without being able to use a phone “as a buffer.” Those were creative hopes, not an announced production plan.

When was the cancellation announced?

Point in the timeline What it means
Before December 2024 Bridges said he had signed on for three seasons and was excited about the story. Steinberg described an idea for a potential third season.
December 17, 2024 TVLine reported that FX had cancelled The Old Man after two seasons.
After the announcement There is no FX Season 3 order. The earlier interviews should be read as pre-cancellation comments.

How did Season 2 end?

The Season 2 finale left a continuation in place: after Harold Harper disappears, Parwana tells Chase that he must help get Harper back. That cliffhanger explains why viewers may still expect another chapter, but an unresolved ending does not mean the network has renewed the series.

Can the story continue in another form?

FX’s cancellation means there is no announced third season of the television series. No replacement network or revival has been established in the available reporting, so claims that Season 3 is merely delayed or pending are inaccurate.

Viewers who want more of the story’s source material can read Thomas Perry’s novel on which the series is based. The book is separate from any future television continuation and does not indicate that FX will produce more episodes.

What Jeff Bridges actually said about Season 3

  • He said he had signed on for three seasons.
  • He said he loved working with the people involved and was excited about the story’s direction.
  • He also said he had not planned that far into the future.
  • All of those remarks came before FX cancelled the show.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: FX cancelled The Old Man after two seasons in December 2024. Jeff Bridges and Jonathan E. Steinberg had discussed continuing the story beforehand, but those comments do not amount to a Season 3 renewal.
