Netflix said Ruby Stokes left Bridgerton because she was moving into the lead role on another Netflix series, Lockwood & Co. Hannah Dodd then took over as Francesca Bridgerton in Season 3. Netflix has not officially substantiated claims about a personal reason, pay dispute, contract conflict or regret.
What Netflix confirmed about the recasting
Netflix announced on May 12, 2022, that Hannah Dodd would play Francesca Bridgerton, taking over the role from Ruby Stokes. The announcement said Stokes had left because she was the lead on another Netflix project, Lockwood & Co., and noted that Bridgerton would return to production that summer.
That announcement is the clearest official explanation for the change. A later Netflix Tudum explainer also describes Stokes’s departure in connection with filming the supernatural drama.

The character was recast; Francesca Bridgerton herself was not replaced or written out. Dodd’s first scenes were filmed early in Season 3 production. She later told Tudum that filming them was “absolutely terrifying,” describing the pressure of introducing her version of a character viewers already knew.

Why the change affected Francesca’s story
Francesca is one of the quieter members of the Bridgerton family. Netflix describes her as reserved, dry-witted, pragmatic and comparatively introverted. Showrunner Jess Brownell told Tudum that Francesca does not always say what she is feeling like the other Bridgertons and has “a very rich internal world.” Those traits give the role a different dramatic rhythm from the family’s more openly expressive characters.
Because Stokes had relatively little screen time, the handover happened before the series had built a long on-screen history for Francesca. Dodd nevertheless arrived as the character moved into a substantially more prominent storyline.
How the books relate to the recast
Julia Quinn’s When He Was Wicked is the sixth Bridgerton novel and centers on Francesca. The television adaptation changes a major element of that story: the book’s Michael Stirling becomes Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza, in the series.
The novel can provide background for readers interested in Francesca’s arc, but it is not a scene-by-scene explanation of the television plot. The change from Michael to Michaela shows that the series is adapting the source material rather than reproducing it unchanged.

Neither Netflix’s casting announcement nor its Tudum coverage establishes a more specific motive for Stokes’s departure. The official material does not substantiate claims that she left because of salary negotiations, a disagreement, a contract dispute, dissatisfaction with the show or a personal decision she later regretted.

Why viewers may remember Francesca differently
Francesca’s limited early appearances can make the recast feel more striking than a conventional actor change. Stokes played her in only a handful of episodes, while Dodd’s arrival coincided with the character receiving a larger narrative role. Viewers were therefore seeing both a new performer and a newly expanded version of Francesca at the same time.
