It is a research-and-development partnership, not a consumer product launch: the announcement describes plans to extend NVIDIA’s Music Flamingo model but gives no product release date, commercial terms or artist payment rates.
What the UMG–NVIDIA partnership is
The companies say they will combine NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure with UMG’s catalog of millions of tracks and conduct joint research and development. They frame the work around human music creation and compensation for rightsholders. The announcement does not specify which tracks may be used in the work, whether they are licensed or opt-in for particular uses, or the terms on which artists and other rightsholders would be compensated.
UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge described the collaboration as a shared effort to use AI to advance the interests of the creative community and music’s role in culture. UMG also said NVIDIA’s commitment to responsible AI principles was important to the partnership. Those statements set out the companies’ stated goals; they do not, on their own, establish specific safeguards, licensing terms or payment arrangements.
What Music Flamingo is intended to do
Analyze and describe full-length tracks
UMG says the partners will extend NVIDIA’s Music Flamingo model for richer music discovery. According to the announcement, Music Flamingo can process full-length tracks up to 15 minutes and interpret elements including harmony, musical structure, timbre, lyrics and cultural context. UMG says the model outperforms leading models across more than 10 benchmarks spanning music captioning, instrument recognition and multilingual lyric transcription. These performance comparisons are UMG’s claims; the announcement does not provide the benchmark names, results or independent evaluations.

- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Support discovery and artist-facing tools
The proposed work goes beyond ordinary search and playlist personalization. The companies say they will explore interactive experiences for fans, along with tools that could help artists analyze, describe and share their music in greater depth. They also plan to investigate AI approaches to protecting artists’ work and providing proper attribution for music-based content. These are areas of exploration, not features confirmed for a released service.
Does Music Flamingo create music?
The announcement focuses on interpreting and discovering existing music. It does not say that Music Flamingo will generate new tracks, nor does it announce a UMG–NVIDIA music-generation product. “AI for music creation” in the partnership’s scope should therefore not be read as confirmation that this particular model creates songs.

How this differs from UMG’s other AI-music work
UMG’s 2025 annual report and separate company announcements describe several initiatives with different stated purposes. The available descriptions do not establish that they share the same technology, licensing terms or launch plans.
| Initiative | Stated purpose | Content and rights detail | Status stated by the companies |
|---|---|---|---|
| UMG–NVIDIA | Music discovery, artist analysis and sharing, fan experiences, and work on protection and attribution | UMG says the work combines NVIDIA AI infrastructure with its catalog of millions of tracks. The announcement does not specify licensing or opt-in terms for particular uses. | Collaboration and joint R&D announced January 6, 2026. No consumer launch date or sign-up process stated. |
| UMG–Udio | A licensed AI music platform for fans to customize, stream and share music on-platform | UMG’s annual report describes authorized, opt-in content. Further artist-control and compensation terms are not stated in the cited description. | Described in UMG’s 2025 annual report as planned to launch in 2026; no specific launch date or geography stated. |
| UMG–Spotify and major labels | Responsible AI tools and products intended to create new revenue streams for participating rightsholders, artists and songwriters | Specific source-content, opt-in, attribution and control arrangements are not stated in the cited annual-report description. | Work is described in UMG’s 2025 annual report; a consumer launch date and geography are not stated there. |
| UMG–Splice | Explore AI-powered music-creation tools and virtual instruments | UMG artists are described as contributing sounds and creative input. Further licensing or compensation terms are not stated in the announcement description. | Collaboration announced December 18, 2025, to explore tools; no launch date or geography stated. |
The clearest distinction is purpose: the NVIDIA announcement centers on understanding and discovering music, while the Udio plan is explicitly described as a licensed platform for fan customization, streaming and sharing. Splice’s announced exploration concerns creation tools and virtual instruments. None of these descriptions alone supplies a complete account of how every artist’s rights or payment would be handled.

What artists and listeners can—and cannot—expect now
For listeners, the announcement points to possible future discovery and fan experiences, but it does not offer an app, subscription or public sign-up. For artists, it signals planned tools and work on protection and attribution, without naming participating artists or describing controls they can use today.
On compensation, UMG and NVIDIA identify rightsholder compensation as a focus, but disclose no royalty rate, payment formula, commercial terms or process for determining who is paid. The reference to UMG’s catalog of millions of tracks also does not by itself establish that every track—or any particular track—will be used to train or operate a model.
