Hints for Connections #417

Try to identify what each word does or describes, rather than pairing words that merely feel related. One word is deliberately tempting in two categories.

Answers for August 1, 2024

The August 1 puzzle was #417; the preceding puzzle, #416, appeared on July 31. Here is the completed grid:

Category Words How the connection works
PROMOTE HYPE, MARKET, PITCH, SELL Ways to promote or publicize something
THROW CAST, CHUCK, FLING, HURL Verbs meaning to throw
BOOKSTORE SECTIONS FICTION, HUMOR, ROMANCE, TRAVEL Common bookstore subject or genre sections
___ SOCKS ANKLE, CREW, SWEAT, TUBE ANKLE socks, CREW socks, SWEAT socks and TUBE socks

The trickiest word: PITCH

PITCH is the puzzle’s main red herring. A pitch can promote or sell an idea, product or service, placing it with HYPE, MARKET and SELL. But “pitch” can also mean to throw, so it initially appears to belong with CAST, CHUCK, FLING and HURL.

The correct choice is determined by the complete set: once PITCH joins the promotion group, the four remaining throw verbs form an exact category. Connections rewards groups that account for all four words cleanly, not just a plausible pair or trio.
