Answers for NYT Connections #661
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | CAPRICE | FANCY, IMPULSE, LARK, WHIM |
| Green | ILK | KIND, LIKE, SORT, TYPE |
| Blue | WILLIAMSES | HANK, ROBIN, TENNESSEE, VENUS |
| Purple | Words pronounced differently as proper nouns | HERB, JOB, NICE, READING |
Why the purple group works
Herb can be a person’s name as well as the common word for a plant. Job is also the name of the biblical figure. Nice can refer to the French city, and Reading can be a place name in England or Pennsylvania. Their proper-name pronunciations do not necessarily match the everyday common-word readings, and the distinction is not identical in every accent.

How the Connections grid works
Connections presents 16 words that must be sorted into four sets of four. You can make up to four mistakes before the round ends. The colors are a rough difficulty guide: yellow is generally the most accessible, while purple is usually the most wordplay-heavy. Guides differ on whether green or blue is harder, so treat that ordering as a tendency rather than a rule.

A safer way to solve similar puzzles
- Scan for an obvious cluster of four before committing to a guess.
- Mark words that could plausibly fit more than one category; they are often deliberate overlaps.
- Test one category at a time and avoid using a word simply because it has a loose association.
- Leave the hardest or most language-dependent group until the clearer sets are removed.
- Use the full answer table only after the hints no longer give you enough traction.
