Eight artists stand out in Ink Master’s long run: Ryan Ashley Malarkey, Scott Marshall, Josh Payne, Anthony Michaels, DJ Tambe, Tony Medellin, Joey Hamilton and Shane O’Neill. This is an editorial selection, not an official ranking. It prioritizes documented season wins where the available sources identify them, while including O’Neill as one of the artists named in Paramount Global’s season-one press material. A win makes a contestant a notable competition pick; it does not prove that one artist is universally better than another.
How these eight were selected
Ink Master is a tattoo competition series. Paramount+’s accessed catalog lists seasons 1 through 17, with season 17 episode listings dated October 29, 2025. Catalog availability can vary by territory. The show has also changed over time: contestant groups, challenges and finale formats differ between seasons, so this list does not treat every artist as if they competed under identical conditions.
Seven names below appear on a secondary reference’s list of season winners. That reference is useful for identifying candidates, not as an official Paramount record or a ranking of artistic ability. Shane O’Neill is included as a season-one contestant named in Paramount Global press material. The picks are presented alphabetically, not in order of merit. Eight notable Ink Master artists
Anthony Michaels
Michaels is among the artists identified as a season winner by the secondary winners reference. That documented competition result is the basis for his place here; the available sources do not establish a current style profile or booking status.
#1 Best Overall
DJ Tambe
Tambe is listed among the season winners and is also featured on Paramount+’s series and season 15 finale pages. Those official pages establish his association with the show, while the winner reference supports his inclusion as a competition standout.
Joey Hamilton
Hamilton appears among the season winners in the secondary reference. His inclusion reflects that competition record, not an official cross-season judgment that he is superior to other artists.
Josh Payne
Payne is also named as a season winner in the secondary reference. The available material supports describing him as a competition standout, but does not substantiate broader claims about his artistic range or present-day work.
Ryan Ashley Malarkey
Malarkey is listed among the season winners and appears among the featured personalities on Paramount+’s series page. Her documented connection to the competition supports her selection; it is not a claim that winning settles who is the best tattoo artist overall.

Scott Marshall
Marshall appears on the secondary winners list. That result makes him a defensible pick for a list centered on competition achievement, though the cited material does not compare his tattooing with that of every other contestant.
Shane O’Neill
O’Neill is one of the season-one artists named in Paramount Global’s original-series press material. The cited evidence establishes his place in the show’s early cast, rather than a season win or a current studio location.
Tony Medellin
Medellin is named among the season winners in the secondary reference. His inclusion is based on that competition record; no current booking details or verified style description are established by the sources cited here.

A season result is a meaningful reason to include an artist in a competition-focused list, but it is not a comprehensive measure of artistic quality. A 2016 CarterMatt ranking describes its own approach as subjective and says it considered body of work, challenge completion, performance against the challenge and mistakes. Those are that outlet’s editorial criteria, not an official show rubric or a definitive standard for judging tattoo artists. CarterMatt’s ranking of Ink Master winners.

The finale stakes also changed across the run. Paramount+’s season 8 finale page describes a live tattoo finale and a $100,000 prize; its season 15 finale page describes a $250,000 prize and the title of Ink Master. Those season-specific examples should not be generalized to every season. Season 8 finale; Season 15 finale.
