Betty Rubble was the Flintstones character originally left out of the chewable vitamins. According to the brand’s official FAQ, a Betty-shaped tablet repeatedly broke during production because her waist was too narrow, and the company worried that children might confuse her with Wilma Flintstone.

Why Betty was missing

The omission was a tablet-design and manufacturing problem, not a storyline decision. The Flintstones Vitamins FAQ says Betty’s thin waist made the chewable break during production. The company also considered Betty and Wilma too visually similar in tablet form, creating a risk that children would not be able to tell them apart.

A contemporary Scholastic report gave the same basic explanation, quoting Miles spokesperson Greg Decker: “You can tell the difference between Fred and Barney, and between Pebbles and Bamm Bamm, but you can’t with Wilma and Betty. That’s why they put the car in there.”

What replaced her

Before Betty was added, the lineup used the Flintmobile shape in her place. The Los Angeles Times reported in 1995 that the Flintmobile would be removed when Betty joined the chewable lineup.

1968 Flintstones multivitamins begin The official FAQ dates the multivitamins’ start to 1968, eight years after the children’s vitamin Chocks.
Before December 1995 Flintmobile included instead of Betty The brand’s account and contemporary reporting identify the car as the replacement shape.
December 1995 Betty Rubble added; Flintmobile removed The official FAQ and 1995 reporting place Betty’s addition in December 1995.

How Betty was eventually added

The Flintstones FAQ says more than 3,000 mothers and children and more than 17,000 callers participated in a poll about adding Betty. It reports that 91 percent favored her inclusion. Those figures are the brand’s own account; the underlying polling records and the poll’s year are not identified in the FAQ, so they should not be treated as independently audited results.

What the historical record does—and does not—show

The evidence clearly identifies Betty Rubble as the omitted character and supports the thin-waist breakage and Wilma-confusion explanations. It also establishes the December 1995 changeover from the Flintmobile to Betty.
